A fundamental premise of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment is that biodiversity and ecosystem services are key determinants of long-term sustainability of social-ecological systems. With a continuing decline in local and global biodiversity and ecosystem services, it is crucial to understand how biodiversity and various ecosystem services interact and how land change may modify these interactions over time. However, few studies have been conducted to quantify these relationships.

Background And Purpose: Inadvertent heart and coronary arteries (CA) irradiation may increase the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients receiving thoracic irradiation. To date, the entity of cardiac-related CA displacement and the possible margins to be used for planning organs at risk volume (PRV) have been poorly described. Aim of this study was to quantify CA displacement and to estimate PRV through the use of ECG-gated computed tomography (CT) scans.

Conformational characterization of single α- and β-epimers of galactosamine in solution still remains an intriguing task because of their flexibility and ability to interconvert. This difficulty was circumvented by recording several "snapshots" of the epimerization process by means of fast ESI vaporization of a galactosamine·HCl sample solution at different times. Consequently, the so generated gaseous mixtures were spectroscopically investigated and the specific conformational features of both α- and β-epimers were assigned, despite the overlapping of several IR signals.

Label-free microscopy is a very powerful technique that can be applied to study samples with no need for exogenous fluorescent probes, keeping the main benefits of multiphoton microscopy, such as longer penetration depths and intrinsic optical sectioning while enabling serial multitechniques examinations on the same specimen. Among the many label-free microscopy methods, harmonic generation (HG) is one of the most intriguing methods due to its generally low photo-toxicity and relative ease of implementation. Today, HG and common two-photon microscopy (TPM) are well-established techniques, and are routinely used in several research fields.

We search for single-photon events in 53  fb^{-1} of e^{+}e^{-} collision data collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B-Factory. We look for events with a single high-energy photon and a large missing momentum and energy, consistent with production of a spin-1 particle A^{'} through the process e^{+}e^{-}→γA^{'}; A^{'}→invisible. Such particles, referred to as "dark photons," are motivated by theories applying a U(1) gauge symmetry to dark matter.

We measure the mass difference, Δm_{+}, between the D^{*}(2010)^{+} and the D^{+} using the decay chain D^{*}(2010)^{+}→D^{+}π^{0} with D^{+}→K^{-}π^{+}π^{+}. The data were recorded with the BABAR detector at center-of-mass energies at and near the ϒ(4S) resonance, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of approximately 468  fb^{-1}. We measure Δm_{+}=(140 601.

We report on the first measurement of the beam-spin asymmetry in the exclusive process of coherent deeply virtual Compton scattering off a nucleus. The experiment uses the 6 GeV electron beam from the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) accelerator at Jefferson Lab incident on a pressurized ^{4}He gaseous target placed in front of the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). The scattered electron is detected by CLAS and the photon by a dedicated electromagnetic calorimeter at forward angles.

In this study, we evaluated the effects of epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (EGCG) in two cancer cell lines, A-431 overexpressing ErbB1 and SK-BR-3, overexpressing ErbB2. EGCG treatment showed dose-dependent collapse of mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψ), increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, changes in nuclear morphology and reduced viability. Flow cytometry data indicated that EGCG partially decreases the phosphorylation of several proteins involved in cell proliferation and survival: pErbB1(Y1173, Y1068), pAkt(S473) and pERK(Y204).

Aims: CXCL1 is a chemokine with pleiotropic effects, including pain and itch. Itch, an unpleasant sensation that elicits the desire or reflex to scratch, it is evoked mainly from the skin and implicates activation of a specific subset of IB4+, C-type primary afferents. In previous studies we showed that acute application of CXCL1 induced a Ca influx of low amplitude and slow kinetics in a subpopulation of transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1)+/isolectin B4 (IB4)+dorsal root ganglia neurons which also responded to other itch-inducing agents.

CXCL1 and CXCL2 are two chemokines with 78% homology of their sequence. CXCL1 was associated with atopic dermatitis, a highly pruritic skin disease, but it is not clear what is its mechanism of action, while for CXCL2 there are no data about an association with itch sensitivity. CXCL1 and CXCL2 can modulate TRPV1 receptors, which are one of the most important downstream effectors for itch sensitivity, upon short-term (4 h) or long-term (24 h) incubation, but the data are incomplete.

The infrared multiphoton dissociation (IRMPD) spectra of electrospray ionization (ESI)-formed proton-bound complexes between the axially chiral multifunctional macrocycle M and d- and l-phenylalanine (P and P ) or d- and l-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (D and D ) are recorded in the ν˜ =2800-3700 cm region. Whereas the diastereomeric [M ⋅H⋅P ] and [M ⋅H⋅P ] complexes do not show any significant spectral differences, the spectrum of [M ⋅H⋅D ] clearly diverges from that of its [M ⋅H⋅D ] diastereomer. A comparison of the experimental spectra with the B3LYP/6-31G**-calculated harmonic vibrational frequencies of a number of stable structures indicates the formation, in the ESI source, of very similar spectroscopically active structures, with the protonated amino acid placed outside the flat cavity of the macrocycle and hydrogen-bonded at its O center.

We report the first beam-target double-polarization asymmetries in the γ+n(p)→π^{-}+p(p) reaction spanning the nucleon resonance region from invariant mass W=1500 to 2300 MeV. Circularly polarized photons and longitudinally polarized deuterons in solid hydrogen deuteride (HD) have been used with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Lab. The exclusive final state has been extracted using three very different analyses that show excellent agreement, and these have been used to deduce the E polarization observable for an effective neutron target.

Early childhood caries (ECC) represents a major health and economic problem worldwide. Its consequences such as early pain experience may affect the immediate and long-term quality of life of the child. In very young and uncooperative children the therapy of ECC is often viable only under general anesthesia.
