Background: Habitat transitions have considerable consequences in organism homeostasis, as they require the adjustment of several concurrent physiological compartments to maintain stability and adapt to a changing environment. Within the range of molecules with a crucial role in the regulation of different physiological processes, neuropeptides are key agents. Here, we examined the coding status of several neuropeptides and their receptors with pleiotropic activity in Cetacea.

Knowledge of predator-prey interactions is key in ecological studies and understanding ecosystem function, yet this is still poorly explored in the deep-sea environment. Carbon (δC: C/C) and nitrogen (δN: N/N) stable isotope ratios of a deep-diving species, the short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus), were used to explore knowledge gaps on its ecological niche and foraging habitats in the Webbnesia marine ecoregion (Tenerife Island, n = 27 animals vs. Madeira, n = 31; 500 km apart) where animals display distinct levels of site fidelity.

Plastic additives, such as phthalates, are ubiquitous contaminants that can have detrimental impacts on marine organisms and overall ecosystems' health. Valuable information about the status and resilience of marine ecosystems can be obtained through the monitoring of key indicator species, such as cetaceans. In this study, fatty acid profiles and phthalates were examined in blubber biopsies of free-ranging individuals from two delphinid species (short-finned pilot whale - Globicephala macrorhynchus, n = 45; common bottlenose dolphin - Tursiops truncatus, n = 39) off Madeira Island (NE Atlantic).

Article Synopsis
  • Ambergris, a rare natural product found on beaches, was analyzed from a large piece of flotsam discovered in the Atlantic in 2019, highlighting its uncommon occurrence.
  • Chemical tests showed that 95% of the outer subsamples dissolved in dichloromethane, revealing the presence of ambrein, a key compound in ambergris.
  • The radiocarbon dating suggested the piece was from after the 1950s and contained a metal distribution dominated by copper and zinc, aligning with the diet of sperm whales that primarily consume squid.

The northern region of Portugal has the largest number of companies manufacturing granite and stone products, which has become the region's trademark. In the municipalities of Marco de Canaveses and Penafiel, the economic activity of this area is important. However, the lack of attractiveness of this activity, combined with the high prevalence of silicosis and tuberculosis in this population, has led to a growing shortage of labor.

The news media in Portugal played an important role during the COVID-19 pandemic by providing people with important and up-to-date health information. However, the number of news reports did not always correspond to the severity of the pandemic. There was significant media attention at the beginning of the pandemic (in early 2020), but media coverage soon declined, and the Portuguese media began to report on a greater diversity of topics.

Whereas dye-sensitized lanthanide-doped nanoparticles represent an unquestionable advance for pushing linear near-infrared (NIR) to visible-light upconversion within the frame of applications, analogous improvements are difficult to mimic for related but intramolecular processes induced at the molecular level in coordination complexes. Major difficulties arise from the cationic nature of the target cyanine-containing sensitizers (S), which drastically limits their thermodynamic affinities for catching the lanthanide activators (A) required for performing linear light upconversion. In this context, the rare previous design of stable dye-containing molecular SA light-upconverters required large S···A distances at the cost of the operation of only poorly efficient intramolecular S → A energy transfers and global sensitization.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers used advanced SNP analysis to examine the genetic differentiation, finding that the Mediterranean population likely formed around the last glacial maximum and experienced significant demographic changes, especially a decline in population size.
  • * Results indicate distinct genetic structures between the Mediterranean's eastern and western basins, influenced by historical gene flow, which raises conservation concerns and highlights the need for tailored strategies to protect these populations.

We present the clinical case of a 53-year-old woman referred for suspicion of recurrence of a mesonephric-like adenocarcinoma of the ovary. Abdominal and pelvic CT revealed multiple round/oval solid nodules with similar density scattered throughout the abdomen and pelvis, the biggest ones appearing in the left hypochondrium; no normal-appearing spleen or ascites were observed. These radiological findings and the absence of significant elevation of CA 125 levels made the radiologists hypothesize that these aspects were related to abdominal splenosis.

Article Synopsis
  • Global warming is affecting marine species, altering their composition and distribution due to changes in ocean temperatures, acidity, and oxygen levels.
  • Experts created thermal suitability curves to predict how different cetacean species in the North Atlantic may respond to future climate scenarios, since traditional experiments can't be conducted on wide-ranging marine predators.
  • The study found that thermal suitability is expected to increase for some species like Balaenoptera edeni and Tursiops truncatus, while it will decline for others like B. physalus and Delphinus delphis, providing valuable insights for conservation efforts.

Gestational age in sheep can be closely predicted through ultrasonographic measurement of fetal bones when correlated to standardized fetal growth curves. However, these standardized curves do not account for factors that are known modulators of fetal growth, such as maternal nutrition or health status. Despite being seasonal breeders, and studies reporting an effect of season on birth weight, the influence of season on fetal growth has not been well characterized.
