Reproductive efficiency is crucial for animal agriculture. This economically important aspect can be influenced by environmental burdens, nutritional imbalance, and gonadal or gametic malformations of genetic origin. Successful implementation of genomic-driven selective breeding in cattle depends on the reproductive performance of artificial insemination (AI) sires with valuable genomic production traits.

Environmental pollution results in serious health hazards to animals, reflected in biogenic and risk element concentrations in animal tissues. The objective of this study was to examinate concentration of selected elements in testes, and epididymal spermatozoa motility of wild boars. Wild boars were hunted in region Žuhračka - Levice, Slovak Republic.

Article Synopsis
  • * Significant changes in sperm motility were observed, particularly at lower temperatures with higher CaCl concentrations, but negatively impacted motility at 37°C compared to control samples.
  • * Overall, while the effects of CaCl on motility varied with concentration and time, there was no significant impact on sperm viability, indicating that CaCl does not substantially enhance stallion reproductive parameters.

The quality of nutrition and environmental pollution are crucial chemical indicators influencing animal health, reflected in element concentrations in animal tissues and coats. This study investigates the concentrations of biogenic elements (calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium, copper, and iron) in sheep wool from various regions of Slovakia to compare concentrations and identify possible correlations between individual elements. Samples were collected from six different regions, and concentrations of elements were measured using flame atomic absorption spectrometry.

Bee drone brood is a beehive by-product with high hormonal activity used in natural medicine to treat male infertility. The aim of the study was to assess the effect of drone brood on stallion spermatozoa during a short-term incubation for its potential use in the equine semen extenders. Three different forms of fixed drone brood (frozen (FR), freeze-dried (FD), and dried extract (DE)) were used.

Conventional, brightfield-microscopic semen analysis provides important baseline information about sperm quality of an individual; however, it falls short of identifying subtle subcellular and molecular defects in cohorts of "bad," defective human and animal spermatozoa with seemingly normal phenotypes. To bridge this gap, it is desirable to increase the precision of andrological evaluation in humans and livestock animals by pursuing advanced biomarker-based imaging methods. This review, spiced up with occasional classic movie references but seriously scholastic at the same time, focuses mainly on the biomarkers of altered male germ cell proteostasis resulting in post-testicular carryovers of proteins associated with ubiquitin-proteasome system.

Background: Conservation of species diversity is the need of the hour for preserving life forms on Earth. Extinction of any part of the ecosystem has negative impacts on many processes and systems. The objective of this work was to analyze some biochemical and molecular indicators and their correlations to biogenic elements and heavy metals in ( = 16).

This study was aimed to determine the impact of different taurine and caffeine combinations on the motility, viability, and oxidative markers of chilled stallion spermatozoa. Each stallion semen sample was diluted in a ratio of 1:2, with various taurine and caffeine concentrations (2.5-7.

This study monitored the chemical and biochemical composition of bovine seminal plasma (SP). Freshly ejaculated semen ( = 20) was aliquoted into two parts. The first aliquot was immediately assessed to determine the sperm motion parameters.

Article Synopsis
  • Studies indicate that reproductive organs are sensitive to environmental toxins, with nanoparticles increasingly used for drug delivery and other consumer products due to their small size and properties.
  • This review analyzes the toxicity of metal nanoparticles (Ag, ZnO, TiO) on male and female reproductive health through various animal studies.
  • Findings suggest that high concentrations of these nanoparticles can negatively affect male sperm health and cause reproductive issues in females, including ovarian and uterine accumulation and conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the dose- and time-dependent effect of caffeine treatment on the motility and viability of stallion spermatozoa at different temperatures. Six dose groups (A to F) were established with changing caffeine concentrations (from 0.625 to 10 mg/mL).

This study is part of a concerted effort to identify and phenotype rare, deleterious mutations that adversely affect sperm quality, or convey high developmental and fertility potential to embryos and ensuing progeny. A rare, homozygous mutation in ( ), which encodes a microtubule-associated protein with high expression in testis and brain was identified in an Angus bull used extensively in artificial insemination (AI) for its outstanding progeny production traits. The bull's fertility was low in cross-breeding timed AI (TAI) (Pregnancy/TAI = 25.

Article Synopsis
  • The composition of seminal plasma varies among individual sires, affecting their fertilizing ability and sperm function due to the presence of micro and macro elements, enzymes, hormones, proteins, and lipids.
  • Elevated levels of trace metals like copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd) can produce reactive oxygen species and negatively impact sperm motility and viability, while antioxidants are crucial for protecting sperm quality.
  • Research on ejaculates from 19 stallions suggests that the components of seminal plasma could serve as biomarkers for assessing the reproductive health of farm animals.

Natural processes along with increased industrial production and the irresponsible behavior of mankind have resulted in environmental pollution. Environmental pollutants can be categorized based on their characteristics and appearance into the following groups: physical, biological, and chemical. Every single one of them represents a serious threat to the male reproductive tract despite the different modes of action.

Feed additive consisting of polysaccharides from brown seaweeds plus phenolic acid, hydroxycinnamic acids, tannins, and flavonoids from plant extracts, was used as rabbit food supplement. Main aim of the study was to determine the effect of natural mix of marine and freshwater seaweed polyphenols on selected reproductive characteristics of male rabbits during the 90-days experiment. Natural mix was incorporated in feed-pellets for rabbits in two different concentrations - 0.

Objective of the present study was to investigate interactions between trace elements content and RedOx status, as well as sperm quality parameters (motility features, DNA fragmentation) in fish spermatozoa in natural conditions. Reproductively mature male freshwater fish (n = 16) of Cyprinus carpio breed were used in the study. Trace elements content was determined in fish milt samples by inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and by cold-vapor atomic absorption spectroscopy (CV-AAS).

The use of artificial insemination in cattle breeding has evolved to global extent, and insemination doses are often shipped via air transport which requires strict radiation-based examinations. For the determination of effect of non-ionizing radiation (NIR), to which are beings frequently exposed due to protection of airport or cultural event security, freshly ejaculated and cryopreserved bovine spermatozoa were used as experimental model. Following radiation with hand-held metal detector in various exposition times (0, 10 s, 15, 30 and 60 min-groups FR, FR10, FR15, FR30 and FR60) the spermatozoa underwent motility and DNA fragmentation analyses.
