Accurately identifying the timing and frequency characteristics of impulse components in EEG signals is essential but limited by the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. Inspired by the visual system's ability to identify objects and their locations, we propose a new method that integrates a visual system model with wavelet analysis to calculate both time and frequency features of local impulses in EEG signals. We develop a mathematical model based on invariant pattern recognition by the visual system, combined with wavelet analysis using Krawtchouk functions as the mother wavelet.

Despite the proliferation of studies on waste governance over the past decades, comparative research on advancing sustainable municipal solid waste management (MSWM) in medium-sized cities across various political regimes and remote geographies has been overlooked. Comprehending factors for governance advancement is critical for Arctic cities, as they face unique challenges due to their geographical remoteness, population size, economic constraints, and severe weather conditions. This qualitative study, drawn from the cases of Anchorage (USA), Murmansk (Russia), and Tromsø (Norway), uses Evolutionary Governance Theory (EGT) to examine how dependencies between actors and institutions enable and create barriers to the advancement of MSWM.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic is an extraordinary challenge for all countries and affects the psychological wellbeing of healthcare professionals working with people suffering from COVID-19 and puts them at a high risk of mental health problems. The aim of the study was to identify stress-related factors that affect the mental health of healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic in Ukraine.

Subjects And Methods: A total of 1098 Ukrainian healthcare workers were surveyed using an online questionnaire consisting of questions relating to a) socio-demographic characteristics; b) perceptions of the COVID-19 related situation; and c) stress and protective factors.

This paper presents the results of multiyear satellite monitoring of oil pollution in the Barents Sea conducted in 2015-2020. Monitoring was based on synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images from the European Space Agency's Sentinel-1A and Sentinel-1B satellites. During monitoring, more than 26,000 SAR images were collected and analyzed for oil pollution in the form of oil spills.

Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) are a heterogeneous group of conditions that include retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) and early-onset severe retinal dystrophy (EO[S]RD), which differ in severity and age of onset. IRDs are caused by mutations in >250 genes. Variants in the gene account for 0.

Article Synopsis
  • High-dose interferon-alpha (IFNA) therapy can lead to neurological and psychiatric side effects, but the genes responsible for these complications are not fully understood.
  • Research found that the gene Grin3α, related to the NMDA receptor, is significantly affected by IFNA treatment in mice, showing increased expression of both its mRNA and protein.
  • The study suggests that IFNA may induce neurotoxicity through elevated Grin3α expression, enhancing the release of neurotransmitters, particularly in response to NMDA or glutamate, without altering certain synaptic processes.

Water-soluble analogue of quercetin, corvitin is used in patients with myocardial infarction as blocker of 5-lipoxygenase. However, its effects on secretion, lipid content and physico-chemical properties of bile have not been understood yet. We investigated the effect of corvitin, applied in different doses, on the level of bile flow, the content of bile free and esterified cholesterol, phospholipids, triacylglycerols, and free fatty acids.

Examined 117 students of the National Pedagogical Dragomanov University to assess body mass index and indicators of the functional state of the cardiovascular system. Was established that regulatory mechanisms in students with overweight and underweight are in a state of tension and functionalities of the cardiovascular system are reduced under normal conditions of learning.

This study was designed to analyze the effect of environmental oxidative stress on human placental monooxygenases, glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-DNA adducts in human term placentas from radioactivity-contaminated and chemically-polluted areas of the Ukraine and Belarus, and to compare these biomarkers to the newborn's general health status. Placental PAH-DNA adduct formation, GST activity, 7-ethoxycoumarin O-deethylase (ECOD) activity, and thiobarbituric reactive substances (TBARS), an index of lipid peroxidation, were measured in groups of women exposed to different levels of radioactivity and PAH pollution. The in vitro metabolism data, obtained from 143 human placental samples at term, were compared to indices of maternal and newborn health.

With the aid of different microbiological methods, antimicrobal properties of decametoxine, a home-produced antiseptic, were studied together with those of the synthetic zoelite NaA-base drug preparation. The antimicrobial activity of the above drug has been shown to be of a synergistic character that makes it a very promising medical agent which will, we believe, come to be widely used in medical practice.

Tenectomy of the superior oblique muscle resulted in complete disappearance of Brown's syndrome in 7 out of 8 children operated on. In view of this, it can be a method of choice in treatment of the syndrome. There was the first clinical case of an additional abnormal attachment of the superior oblique muscle tendon to the sclera.

Examination of 21 children with unilateral congenital paresis of superior oblique muscle and of 50 children with unilateral hyperfunction of inferior oblique muscle has shown that both forms of early squint have a picture of the same syndrome of oblique muscles disfunction as a primary congenital defect of muscular balance. A constant sign of the syndrome is unilateral hypertropia of adduction, disappearing or sharply reducing in abduction of the upward deviated eye, as well as horizontal squint of a convergent type, more frequently esotropia, nonaccommodative or partially accommodative, accompanied by a V-sign. It is proposed to name this syndrome as "syndrome of congenital unilateral hyperfunction of inferior oblique muscle".

The results of immunological examination of 40 pregnant women recovered from tuberculosis and 7 healthy pregnant women are presented. The highest titers of antituberculous antibodies, the highest levels of leukocyte migration inhibition in response to tuberculin and the highest percentage of formazan-positive neutrophils were characteristic of the women recovered from tuberculosis. There was an increase in the indices by the pregnancy terms from the 36th to the 40th weeks.

Toxic patterns of diphtheria of the fauces in adults are characterized by laryngeal lesions which considerably deteriorate the disease prognosis. The clinical manifestations of diphtheric croup may be unpronounced in such cases and be masked by other severe disease symptoms. If patients with toxic diphtheria develop croup, the necessity of surgical treatment arises at earlier times as compared with cases of isolated croup.
