Additional insight is needed to improve preoperative work-up and intraoperative strategies to increase safety and promote the dissemination of minimally invasive segmentectomy (MIS). Objective: Segmentectomy is becoming the standard of care for small, peripheral non-small cell lung cancer. To improve perioperative management in this population, this study aims to identify factors influencing hospital length of stay after segmentectomy.

Methods: Patients who underwent segmentectomy for any indication between January 2018 and May 2023 were identified using a prospectively maintained institutional database.

ProtoColVR: Requirements Gathering and Collaborative Rapid Prototyping of VR Training Simulators for Multidisciplinary Teams.

We present ProtoColVR, a methodology and a plugin designed for gathering requirements and collaborative rapid prototyping of virtual reality training simulators. Our methodology outlines the utilization of current technologies, the involvement of stakeholders during design and development, and the implementation of simulator creation through multiple iterations. We incorporate open-source tools and freely available environments like Twine and Unity to establish a reference implementation for requirements gathering and rapid prototyping.

Efficacy of the "Start to move" protocol on functionality, ICU-acquired weakness and delirium: A randomized clinical trial.

We followed the PRISMA guidelines and performed the systematic literature search using PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library.

In this review, we will discuss new diagnostic techniques for lung cancer, innovations in surgery, and major updates on latest treatment options including immunotherapy. All these have significantly started to change our approach toward the management of lung cancer and have great potential to improve the lives of our patients afflicted with this disease.

Our previous work found that mutation of zebrafish , which encodes a transcriptional mediator of the Wnt signaling pathway, leads to the loss of hypothalamic neurons and behavioral phenotypes that are both associated with stress-related human mood disorders However, the specific Lef1 target genes that link neurogenesis to behavior remain unknown. One candidate is , which encodes a transcription factor with known roles in hypothalamic development.

Background: Uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) segmentectomy is gaining worldwide acceptance, but experience in North America is still limited. We report a North American multicenter comparison of uniportal multiportal VATS segmentectomy.

Methods: We performed an institutional review board-exempt retrospective chart review on prospectively collected databases at two North American centers, from January 2012 to December 2020.

Organized Scientific Diaspora and Its Contributions to Science Diplomacy in Emerging Economies: The Case of Latin America and the Caribbean.

The current knowledge society has driven an unprecedented mobility of people, especially scientists, from emerging economies to developed countries. This mobility can allow the development of human talent and the access to first class infrastructure and resources, but it can also mean a loss for emerging economies due to the phenomenon of brain drain. To counteract this situation, some countries in Latin America and the Caribbean have developed models for the articulation of their scientific diaspora in projects and programs, with the aim of exchanging knowledge and capitalizing on human and technical resources to advance science, technology and innovation systems.

Association between thyroid function and Alzheimer's disease: A systematic review.

Alterations in metabolic parameters have been associated with an increased risk of dementia, among which thyroid function has gained great importance in Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology in recent years. However, it remains unclear whether thyroid dysfunctions could influence and contribute to the beginning and/or progression of AD or if it results from AD. This systematic review was conducted to examine the association between thyroid hormone (TH) levels and AD.

A transgene targeted to the zebrafish nkx2.4b locus drives specific green fluorescent protein expression and disrupts thyroid development.

Background: With the goal of labeling and manipulating the zebrafish hypothalamus, we sought to target a green fluorescent protein (gfp) transgene to the expression domains of nkx2.4b, a gene expressed during hypothalamic and thyroid development. We combined transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALENs)-mediated mutagenesis with a targeting construct to enable insertion of a gfp transgene into the endogenous nkx2.

Effect of red blood cell storage duration on major postoperative complications in cardiac surgery: A randomized trial.

Background: Although observational studies suggest an association between transfusion of older red blood cell (RBC) units and increased postoperative risk, randomized trials have not supported this. The objective of this randomized trial was to test the effect of RBC storage age on outcomes after cardiac surgery.

Methods: From July 2007 to May 2016, 3835 adults undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting, cardiac valve procedures, or ascending aorta repair, either alone or in combination, were randomized to transfusion of RBCs stored for ≤14 days (younger units) or for ≥20 days (older units) intraoperatively and throughout the postoperative hospitalization.
