Background: As new aesthetic treatment techniques are developed, the understanding of botulinum toxin type A safety and treatment outcomes continues to evolve.

Objective: This article was developed to provide a comprehensive up-to-date reference for clinicians using incobotulinumtoxinA (INCO; Xeomin/Bocouture, Merz Pharmaceuticals GmbH, Frankfurt, Germany) for aesthetic treatments.

Patients And Methods/materials: A Latin American panel of 11 physicians was assembled to discuss and develop recommendations on the use of INCO for aesthetic treatment based on the literature review and their private medical practice.

Background: Epidemiological evidence suggests a J-shaped association between alcohol consumption and cardiovascular mortality, with higher cardiovascular event rates occurring among abstainers and heavy drinkers compared to moderate consumers. However, this hypothesis has been challenged by more recent studies. Furthermore, ethnicity, gender, type of alcoholic beverage, and pattern of alcohol intake, influence the relationship between alcohol and heart health.

The aim of this study was to estimate the rate of Mother-to-child Transmission (MTCT) of HIV to neonates in a reference university hospital in Sao Luis city, the capital of Maranhao State (MA), evaluating MTCT-associated factors. A retrospective cohort study based on data from the Notifiable Diseases Data System (SINAN) was carried out and included all HIV-exposed neonates notified from 2013 to 2017 by the university hospital. The study population comprised 725 HIV-exposed neonates, of whom 672 neonates were exposed and uninfected, and 53 were exposed and infected.

Alcohol has been considered throughout history as both a tonic and a poison. The answer as to which likely depends on one's current health, the amount one consumes, and with what regularity. In examining the relationship of alcohol and cardiovascular health, most, but not all, epidemiological studies suggest that light to moderate alcohol consumption can reduce the incidence of coronary artery disease (CAD), ischemic stroke, and peripheral arterial disease events.

Background: There is substantial interpersonal variation in the patterns of muscular contraction that substantiates the use of personalized points of application and dosages in clinical practice to achieve optimal results. Nevertheless, there has been no real-life therapeutic series with botulinum toxin for aesthetic treatment of the face in which the subjects were systematically followed to assess its long-term benefit.

Purpose: To assess the performance and length of the treatment of glabellar and forehead lines with IncobotulinumtoxinA in a real-life setting.

Article Synopsis
  • Individualized guided selection of antiplatelet therapy, which uses genetic and platelet function testing, has the potential to improve outcomes for patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) compared to standard therapy.
  • A systematic review pooled data from 11 clinical trials involving 18,465 patients and found that guided therapy significantly reduced major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), heart attacks (MI), stent thrombosis (ST), strokes, and minor bleeding.
  • The results suggest that implementing genetic and platelet function testing can lead to better antiplatelet therapy choices for patients, ultimately enhancing their overall health outcomes.

Myocarditis was identified as a rare but serious adverse event that can occur after mRNA-based coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination, particularly in young males. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we report a case of a young obese male without multiple comorbidities who presented with abdominal pain and was found to have severe myocarditis/cardiomyopathy, which was likely due to mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccination. The patient had left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation during hospitalization.

Progressive hypoxia in hospitalized patients can be due to many etiologies, especially in patients with multiple comorbidities. More unusual causes of hypoxia, such as patent foramen ovale (PFO) with a right to left shunting in the absence of elevated right atrial pressures, should be considered when workup does not reveal a specific etiology. < Hypoxemia due to a right-to-left atrial shunt with normal pulmonary arterial pressures can be seen in the aortic aneurysm patients.

Background: Studies have shown that the incidence of atrial fibrillation (AF) in cancer is most likely due to the presence of inflammatory markers. The purpose of our study is to determine the association of AF with different cancer subtypes and its impact on in-hospital outcomes.

Methods: Data were obtained from the National Inpatient Sample database between 2005 and 2015.

Article Synopsis
  • Dietetics plays a crucial role in research, revealing the cardiovascular benefits of healthy diets, notably through the consumption of organic foods and chili peppers (CP).
  • A search of major databases identified relevant studies on CP consumption, ultimately narrowing it down to four observational studies involving over 570,000 participants.
  • The analysis demonstrated that CP consumers had a significantly lower risk of all-cause mortality as well as reduced risks for cardiovascular diseases and cancer-related deaths, suggesting a strong association between CP consumption and improved health outcomes.

Background: The effectiveness of oral and intravenous iron supplementation in reducing the risk of mortality and hospitalizations in HF patients with iron deficiency is not well-established.

Methods: A thorough literature search was conducted across 2 electronic databases (Medline and Cochrane Central) from inception through March 2021. RCTs assessing the impact of iron supplementation on clinical outcomes in iron deficient HF patients were considered for inclusion.

Background: The association between atrial fibrillation (Afib) and sinus and AV nodal dysfunction has previously been reported. However, no data are available regarding the association between Afib and bundle branch block (BBB).

Methods: Patient data were obtained from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) database between years 2009 and 2015.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (Afib) is a common cardiac manifestation of hyperthyroidism. The data regarding outcomes of Afib with and without hyperthyroidism are lacking.

Hypothesis: We hypothesized that patients with Afib and hyperthyroidism have better clinical outcomes, compared with Afib patients without hyperthyroidism.

Article Synopsis
  • Atrial fibrillation (AF) is common in hospitalized patients with rheumatic diseases (RD), with a prevalence of 23.9%, particularly high in conditions like polymyalgia rheumatica, gout, and pseudogout.
  • Those with AF experienced worse morbidity, including increased hospital stays and costs, and higher mortality rates compared to those without AF.
  • The study indicates that individuals with RD and AF have about double the risk of mortality, highlighting the significant impact of AF on patient outcomes in this population.*

A number of devices can now provide mechanical circulatory support (MCS) to patients with acute cardiogenic shock (CS) and chronic end-stage heart failure (HF). Women differ from men in pathophysiology and natural history of CS and HF, and are usually sicker at admission. Current evidence suggests that women benefit as much as men, if not more, from both temporary and durable MCS for appropriate indications.

Background: The Brugada pattern is identified on the EKG by a coved ST-segment elevation accompanied by a negative T wave in the early precordial leads in the absence of a cardiac structural abnormality. Brugada pattern and Brugada syndrome should be differentiated, as the latter is associated with an increased risk of sudden cardiac death.

Methods: The literature was searched using multiple databases to identify all the articles on Brugada pattern.

Background: Serum gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) is a marker of oxidative stress, associated with increased cardiovascular (CV) risk. The impact of smoking on oxidative stress may be aggravated in individuals with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We aimed to ascertain the association of smoking on GGT levels in the presence or absence of NAFLD.

Introduction This meta-analysis was conducted to assess the safety and efficacy of aspiration thrombectomy versus stent retriever thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Methods We queried online databases for original studies comparing aspiration thrombectomy with stent retriever thrombectomy in patients with AIS. After article selection, data were extracted on multiple baseline characteristics and prespecified endpoints.
