Digital technology that utilizes 3D printing has become a viable alternative to the traditional fabrication of wax patterns and definitive restorations for pressable ceramics. Digital workflows afford clinicians fewer variables, improved repeatability, and faster design and fabrication times. The print/press technique for producing zirconia-reinforced lithium-disilicate restorations offers benefits in terms of convenience, precision, and improved mechanical properties.

Article Synopsis
  • The EndoFLIP is a new diagnostic system that evaluates esophageal function in real time, especially beneficial for patients with unclear esophageal motor issues like outflow obstruction and achalasia.
  • The study at San Ignacio University Hospital involved 27 patients, primarily women, all over 18, and focused on cases with inconclusive prior diagnoses.
  • Results showed varied contractile responses in patients, revealing that many had normal or absent responses, which helps in understanding their individual esophageal conditions.

This paper reports a rapid and sensitive sensor for the detection and quantification of the COVID-19 N-protein (N-PROT) via an electrochemical mechanism. Single-frequency electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used as a transduction method for real-time measurement of the N-PROT in an immunosensor system based on gold-conjugate-modified carbon screen-printed electrodes (Cov-Ag-SPE). The system presents high selectivity attained through an optimal stimulation signal composed of a 0.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) has emerged as a significant public health concern due to its rapid spread and potential for causing debilitating epidemics. In Argentina, the virus has garnered attention since its introduction to the Americas in 2013, due to its growing incidence and impact in neighbouring countries. Here we present a comprehensive analysis of the spatiotemporal dynamics of CHIKV in Argentina, focusing on the evolutionary trajectory of its genetic variants.

The pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has raised awareness in the scientific community about the importance of being prepared for sanitary emergencies. Many measures implemented during the COVID pandemic are now being expanded to other applications. In the field of molecular and immunological diagnostics, the need to massively test the population worldwide resulted in the application of a variety of methods to detect viral infection.

The complete blood count (CBC) is a highly requested test that is generally restricted to centralized laboratories, which are limited by high cost, being maintenance-demanding, and requiring costly equipment. The Hilab System (HS) is a small, handheld hematological platform that uses microscopy and chromatography techniques, combined with machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI), to perform a CBC test. This platform uses ML and AI techniques to add higher accuracy and reliability to the results besides allowing for faster reporting.

The Aedes aegypti mosquito is the main vector of dengue and is a synanthropic insect and due to its anthropophilic nature, it has specific reproductive needs. In addition to that, it also needs tropical regions that provide climate-prone conditions that favor vector development. In this article, we propose the cross-correlation analysis between the climatic variables air temperature, relative humidity, weekly average precipitation and dengue cases in the period from 2017 to early 2021 in the municipality of Alagoinhas, Bahia, Brazil.

Quick and reliable mass testing of infected people is an effective tool for the contingency of SARS-CoV-2. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Point-of-Care (POC) tests using Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) arose as a useful diagnostic tool. LAMP tests are a robust and fast alternative to Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), and their isothermal property allows easy incorporation into POC platforms.

Lateral flow antigen tests have been widely used in the Covid-19 pandemic, allowing faster diagnostic test results and preventing further viral spread through isolation of infected individuals. Accomplishment of this screening must be performed with tests that show satisfactory sensitivity in order to successfully detect the target protein and avoid false negatives. The aim of this study was to create a lateral flow test that could detect SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein in low concentrations that were comparable to the limits of detection claimed by existing tests from the market.

The coronavirus pandemic accentuated the need for molecular diagnostic tests. A technique highly used to this end is the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)-a sensitive and specific technique commonly used as the gold standard for molecular diagnostics. However, it demands highly trained personnel and high-maintenance equipment and is relatively time-consuming.

The complete blood count (CBC) is one of the most requested tests by physicians. CBC tests, most realized in conventional hematological analyzers, are restricted to centralized laboratories due to frequent maintenance, large devices, and expensive costs required. On the other hand, most handheld CBC devices commercially available show high prices and are not liable to calibration or control procedures, which results in poor quality compared to standard hematology instruments.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on new Pt(II) complexes made from semisquaraine-type ligands, detailing their synthesis, characterization, and potential as cancer treatments.
  • Eight new ligands were created using a simple method, and their structures were confirmed through advanced techniques like NMR and X-ray diffraction, as well as theoretical calculations.
  • The complexes exhibit strong photoactivity and improved solubility in biological environments, showing enhanced cytotoxic effects on various cancer cell lines, including those resistant to cisplatin, especially after photoactivation.

Numerous studies report on the synergy between ozonation and photocatalytic oxidation (TiO/UVA), which could open the way to the application of photocatalytic ozonation (PCOz) in water treatment. With the aim of establishing the existence of this synergy and its origin, in this work, using TiO P25, 365 nm UVA LEDs and ozone transferred doses up to 5 mg (mg DOC) (DOC 7 - 10 mg L), a systematic study has been carried out featuring the effect of pH, alkalinity and water matrix in each of the systems involved in PCOz, with special attention to the role of organics adsorption onto TiO. In ultrapure water, an increase in pH and carbonates content exerted a slight negative effect on the photocatalytic degradation of primidone (low adsorption onto TiO and mainly abated by free HO), this effect being higher on its mineralization.

A set of manganese oxide catalysts was synthesized via two preparation techniques: solution combustion synthesis (MnO/MnO-SCS and MnO-SCS) and sol-gel synthesis (MnO-SG550 and MnO-SG650). The physicochemical properties of the catalysts were studied by means of N-physisorption at -196 °C, X-ray powder diffraction, H temperature-programmed reduction (H-TPR), soot-TPR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The high catalytic performance of the catalysts was verified in the oxidation of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) probe molecules (ethene and propene) and carbon soot in a temperature-programmed oxidation setup.

IVIA is a joint initiative of at least 8 Latin-American countries plus Portugal and Spain to make good use of large telecommunications antennas that are out of service in these countries, because most international communications are now using submarine cables. The first step will be to refurbish the antennas and then to start doing single dish observations of radiosources. In a second step the antennas will be equipped with VLBI (Very Long Base Interferometry) equipment, to establish a VLBI network.

In this contribution, an open-source computational toolbox composed of FEniCS and complementary packages is introduced to the chemical and process engineering field by addressing two case studies. First, the oxidation of o-xylene to phthalic anhydride is modelled and used as a FEniCS' proof-of-concept based on a comparison with the software Aspen Custom Modeler (ACM). The results show a maximum absolute error of 2% and thus a good FEniCS/ACM agreement.

microRNAs (miRNAs) are non-coding small RNAs that regulate gene expression at post-transcriptional level. Thousands of miRNAs have been identified in legumes, but studies about miRNAs linked to peanut nodule functionality are scarce. In this work we analyzed transcriptional changes in peanut nodules to identify miRNAs involved in functional processes of these organs.
