A better comprehension of the prilocaine (PLC)-β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) complex liberation to membranes was provided by studying the architectural supramolecular arrangements of PLC, β-CD and egg phosphatidylcholine (EPC) liposomes, a membrane model. The topologies and possible interactions of mixtures of PLC, β-CD and EPC liposomes were investigated by nuclear magnetic resonances combining experimental (1)H-NMR (1D ROESY, STD and DOSY) at different pHs. The results indicate that in the mixture PLC/β-CD/EPC at pH 10 the PLC molecules are almost totally embedded into the liposomes and little interaction was observed between PLC and β-CD.

Intestinal uptake, insulinemia and hypoglycemic effect of orally delivered insulin encapsulated in polyelectrolytically stable nanoparticles were evaluated in streptozotocin-induced Wistar diabetic rats. Nanoparticles with 396nm mean diameter were formed by alginate and dextran sulfate nucleating around calcium and binding to poloxamer, stabilized by chitosan, and subsequently coated with albumin. The resulting negatively charged nanoparticles retained insulin bioactivity and enhanced pharmacological availability by shielding insulin from enzymatic degradation and through chemical and physical facilitation of permeation through the intestinal membrane.

Factors associated with return to work following a hand injury: a qualitative/quantitative approach.

Objectives: To describe workers who returned to work after a hand injury and to analyze the factors associated with this outcome three years after discharge from rehabilitation.

Methods: An observational, cross-sectional study was carried out with triangulation of quantitative and qualitative methods. Methods: A total of 54,369 individuals aged > or = 18 years living in Brazilian state capitals and the Federal District in 2006 were interviewed through the system Vigilância de Fatores de Risco e Proteção para Doenças Crônicas por Inquérito Telefônico (VIGITEL--telephone-based surveillance of risk and protective factors for chronic diseases). The food consumption indicators used were regular intake of fruits and vegetables (> or = 5 days/week) and adequate intake (> or = 5 times/day).

Variational image segmentation for endoscopic human colonic aberrant crypt foci.

The aim of this paper is to introduce a variational image segmentation method for assessing the aberrant crypt foci (ACF) in the human colon captured in vivo by endoscopy. ACF are thought to be precursors for colorectal cancer, and therefore their early detection may play an important clinical role. We enhance the active contours without edges model of Chan and Vese to account for the ACF's particular structure.

The choice of appropriate animal models for the initial in vivo testing of potential anticonvulsant compounds is one of the most important steps in the successful search for new antiepileptic drugs. The purpose of this paper is to describe the most important aspects to take into account when performing the maximal electroshock seizure (MES) test in the routine laboratory screening of new antiepileptics: the conventional and threshold MES test experimental procedures, the factors affecting experimental data (laboratory conditions, administration vehicles and drug formulations, time after drug administration, and stimulus duration and site of stimulation) and the assessment of anticonvulsant activity are discussed.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the activity of semicarbazide-sensitive amine oxidase (SSAO) and the total nitrite and nitrate (NO( x )) concentrations in serum from type 2 diabetic patients and control subjects in order to evaluate if they could be used as novel diabetic markers. We studied 38 type 2 diabetic patients and 35 control subjects. Serum samples from those subjects were evaluated by radiochemical methods for SSAO activity using (14)C-benzylamine.

Factors associated with fruit and vegetable intake among adults of the city of São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil.

Objective: To describe the frequency of fruit and vegetable intake by adults and to assess factors associated with this frequency.

Methods: Cross-sectional study, carried out between October and December 2003 in the municipality of São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil. Telephone interviews were conducted on a probabilistic sample of the adult population (>18 years) living in the city of Sao Paulo and with access to land telephone lines, totaling 1,267 women and 855 men.

Disposition of eslicarbazepine acetate in the mouse after oral administration.

Eslicarbazepine acetate is a promising antiepileptic drug structurally related to carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine, which is in the final phase of clinical development. The metabolism of eslicarbazepine acetate is clearly species dependent and, in this case, among small laboratory animals, the mouse seems to be the most relevant species to humans. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate the plasma, brain and liver disposition of eslicarbazepine acetate in mice to better understand its disposition in humans.

Synthesis and antimalarial activity of hydroxyethylpiperazine derivatives.

The antimalarial activity of hydroxyethylpiperazine derivatives, synthesized from the reaction of (2S,3S)Boc-phenylalanine epoxide with benzylpiperazines in good yields (76-96%), has been evaluated in vitro against the Plasmodium falciparum W2 clone (chloroquine resistant). The results show that some compounds have moderate activity against this parasite and none of the active compounds showed cytotoxicity at high concentration (100 microg/ml).

[Development of a multidimensional system for classification and management of health information: applying to clinical information].

Introduction: The large amount of information in the medical area creates management problems, being necessary systematic methods for filing and retrieval. With information on the context of clinical records, methods must integrate controlled biomedical terminologies and desirable characteristics oriented to the structure, content and clinical results. The objective is to test the applicability and capacity for retrieval of a multidimensional system developed for classification and management of health information.

Maintenance and tolerability of infliximab in a cohort of 152 patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Objective: To determine the maintenance, tolerability and safety of infliximab in an unselected cohort of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Patients And Methods: One hundred and fifty-two RA patients receiving at least one course of infliximab between 2000 and 2003 were included in this study. Response to treatment and safety were assessed through recording adverse events, physical examinations and standard laboratory tests.

Stereoselective disposition of S- and R-licarbazepine in mice.

The stereoselective disposition of S-licarbazepine (S-Lic) and R-licarbazepine (R-Lic) was investigated in plasma, brain, liver, and kidney tissues after their individual administration (350 mg/kg) to mice by oral gavage. Plasma, brain, liver, and kidney concentrations of licarbazepine enantiomers and their metabolites were determined over the time by a validated chiral HPLC-UV method. The mean concentration data, attained at each time point, were analyzed using a non-compartmental model.
