The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between total nitrite/nitrate concentrations (NOx) and the kinetic parameters of monoamine oxidase enzymes (MAO-A and MAO-B) and semicarbazide-sensitive amine oxidase (SSAO) in human mesenteric arteries. Arteries were from non-diabetic and type 2 diabetic patients with sigmoid or rectum carcinoma for whom surgery was the first option and who were not exposed to neo-adjuvant therapy. Segments of human inferior mesenteric arteries from non-diabetic (61.

The topologies and possible interactions of mixtures of PLC, β-CD and EPC liposomes were investigated by nuclear magnetic resonances combining experimental (1)H-NMR (1D ROESY, STD and DOSY) at different pHs. The results indicate that in the mixture PLC/β-CD/EPC at pH 10 the PLC molecules are almost totally embedded into the liposomes and little interaction was observed between PLC and β-CD.

Methods: The study group was 1296 fetuses aged between 33 and 40 weeks. The correlation between GA and colon thickness was assessed by the Pearson correlation test.
Monoamine oxidase (MAO, type A and B) and semicarbazide-sensitive amine oxidase (SSAO) metabolize biogenic amines, however, the impact of these enzymes in arteries from patients with type 2 diabetes remains poorly understood. We investigated the kinetic parameters of the enzymes to establish putative correlations with noradrenaline (NA) content and patient age in human mesenteric arteries from type 2 diabetic patients. The kinetic parameters were evaluated by radiochemical assay and NA content by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Indomethacin (IM), a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, has the capacity to induce hepatic and renal injuries when administrated systemically. The aim of this study is to assess the IM absorption from complexed forms when orally administered to rats, by means of a comparative evaluation of its capacity to induce hepatic and renal injury in different forms, namely IM acid, IM sodium salt or IM complexed with hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD), using freeze- and spray-drying methods. A total of 135 Wistar rats weighing 224.

Nanoparticles with 396nm mean diameter were formed by alginate and dextran sulfate nucleating around calcium and binding to poloxamer, stabilized by chitosan, and subsequently coated with albumin. The resulting negatively charged nanoparticles retained insulin bioactivity and enhanced pharmacological availability by shielding insulin from enzymatic degradation and through chemical and physical facilitation of permeation through the intestinal membrane.

Latex of Calotropis procera has been described as a relevant source of pharmacologically active proteins, including proteins with anticancer activity. A previous in vitro study of laticifer proteins (LP) from C. procera reported that they had selective cytotoxic effects on human cancer cell lines.

Methods: An observational, cross-sectional study was carried out with triangulation of quantitative and qualitative methods. The quantitative analysis used a database with sociodemographic, functional and clinical information on 35 individuals who were classified into two groups (return/no return to work).
This study aimed to evaluate the semicarbazide-sensitive amine oxidase (SSAO) activity in human arterial tissues and in serum of patients with type 2 diabetes. The SSAO activity, with (14)C-benzylamine as substrate, was measured in homogenates of human inferior mesenteric arteries obtained at surgery, from 10 patients with type 2 diabetes and 16 non-diabetic patients and in the serum of 39 patients with type 2 diabetes and 40 non-diabetic control patients. The SSAO activity in the homogenates of vascular tissue was significantly lower in the diabetics than in the non-diabetics (P = 0.

Methods: A total of 54,369 individuals aged > or = 18 years living in Brazilian state capitals and the Federal District in 2006 were interviewed through the system Vigilância de Fatores de Risco e Proteção para Doenças Crônicas por Inquérito Telefônico (VIGITEL--telephone-based surveillance of risk and protective factors for chronic diseases). The food consumption indicators used were regular intake of fruits and vegetables (> or = 5 days/week) and adequate intake (> or = 5 times/day).
The aim of this paper is to introduce a variational image segmentation method for assessing the aberrant crypt foci (ACF) in the human colon captured in vivo by endoscopy. ACF are thought to be precursors for colorectal cancer, and therefore their early detection may play an important clinical role. We enhance the active contours without edges model of Chan and Vese to account for the ACF's particular structure.

It comprises of a non-dialyzable protein fraction (LP) that exhibits anti-inflammatory properties and a dialyzable fraction (DF) exhibiting pro-inflammatory properties. The present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of LP sub-fractions on neutrophil functions and nociception in rodent models and to elucidate the mediatory role of nitric oxide (NO).

The choice of appropriate animal models for the initial in vivo testing of potential anticonvulsant compounds is one of the most important steps in the successful search for new antiepileptic drugs. The purpose of this paper is to describe the most important aspects to take into account when performing the maximal electroshock seizure (MES) test in the routine laboratory screening of new antiepileptics: the conventional and threshold MES test experimental procedures, the factors affecting experimental data (laboratory conditions, administration vehicles and drug formulations, time after drug administration, and stimulus duration and site of stimulation) and the assessment of anticonvulsant activity are discussed.

Eslicarbazepine acetate is a promising antiepileptic drug structurally related to carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine, which is in the final phase of clinical development. The metabolism of eslicarbazepine acetate is clearly species dependent and, in this case, among small laboratory animals, the mouse seems to be the most relevant species to humans. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate the plasma, brain and liver disposition of eslicarbazepine acetate in mice to better understand its disposition in humans.

The stereoselective disposition of S-licarbazepine (S-Lic) and R-licarbazepine (R-Lic) was investigated in plasma, brain, liver, and kidney tissues after their individual administration (350 mg/kg) to mice by oral gavage. Plasma, brain, liver, and kidney concentrations of licarbazepine enantiomers and their metabolites were determined over the time by a validated chiral HPLC-UV method. The mean concentration data, attained at each time point, were analyzed using a non-compartmental model.
