In this paper, we investigate how technology has contributed to experimental economics in the past and illustrate how experimental economics can contribute to technological progress in the future. We argue that with machine learning (ML), a new technology is at hand, where for the first time experimental economics can contribute to enabling substantial improvement of technology. At the same time, ML opens up new questions for experimental research because it can generate previously impossible observations.

A bottleneck in sustainable fruit production is the replacement of chemical products with natural compounds. Matrine and oxymatrine, derived from a Chinese medicinal herb, have exhibited potential for controlling agricultural pests. However, there is no information regarding their effectiveness in managing dipterans.

Literature suggests that intravenous prophylaxis exceeding 48 h offers no additional benefit in preventing surgical site infections (SSI) in patients with microvascular head and neck reconstruction. However, protocols for antibiotic therapy duration post-reconstruction are not standardized. This study identifies factors predicting prolonged intravenous antibiotic use and antibiotic escalation in patients receiving free flap head neck reconstruction.

Various viral proteins are post-translationally modified by SUMO-conjugation during the human adenovirus (HAdV) replication cycle. This modification leads to diverse consequences for target proteins as it influences their intracellular localization or cell transformation capabilities. SUMOylated HAdV proteins include the multifunctional oncoprotein E1B-55K.

Screening large molecule libraries against pathogenic bacteria is often challenged by a low hit rate due to limited uptake, underrepresentation of antibiotic structural motifs, and assays that do not resemble the infection conditions. To address these limitations, we present a screen of a focused library of alkyl guanidinium compounds, a structural motif associated with antibiotic activity and enhanced uptake, under host-mimicking infection conditions against a panel of disease-associated bacteria. Several hit molecules were identified with activities against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, highlighting the fidelity of the general concept.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the difference between pre- and post-operative radiotherapy on the progress of ossification after free fibula flap reconstruction of the mandible using three-dimensional (3D) analysis. A total of 38 free fibula reconstructions of the mandible were evaluated retrospectively for ossification between bone segments by measuring Hounsfield Units (HU) in at least two postoperative computer tomography scans (average of 2.4 scans per patient; around the 5th, 12th, 16th, and 19th month postoperative).

Staphylococcus aureus signal peptidase IB (SpsB) is an essential enzyme for protein secretion. While inhibition of its activity by small molecules is a well-precedented mechanism to kill bacteria, the mode of activation is however less understood. We here investigate the activation mechanism of a recently introduced activator, the antibiotic compound PK150, and demonstrate by combined experimental and Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation studies a unique principle of enzyme stimulation.

Background: The increasing prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) and chronic kidney diseases highlights the need for a deeper comprehension of the molecular mechanisms linking them. Mutations in PKD1, the gene encoding Polycystin-1 (PKD1 or PC1), account for 85% of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) cases. This disease often includes cardiac complications such as AF.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a global cancer burden with a 5-year overall survival rate of around 50%, stagnant for decades. A tumour-induced immunosuppressive microenvironment contributes to HNSCC progression, with the adenosine (ADO) pathway and an upregulated expression of inhibitory immune checkpoint regulators playing a key role in this context. The correlation between high neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) with advanced tumour staging suggests involvement of neutrophils (NØ) in cancer progression.

The interconnections between co-transcriptional regulation, chromatin environment, and transcriptional output remain poorly understood. Here, we investigate the mechanism underlying RNA 3' processing-mediated Polycomb silencing of Arabidopsis FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC). We show a requirement for ANTHESIS PROMOTING FACTOR 1 (APRF1), a homolog of yeast Swd2 and human WDR82, known to regulate RNA polymerase II (RNA Pol II) during transcription termination.

Background: Currently, a conclusive experience on the uniform implementation and benefits of day hospice structures and interventions is lacking in Germany. The following questions should be clarified: (1) Which structural conditions and interventional measures should be established in day hospices from the point of view of patients, relatives, and specialist staff?; (2) Are the planned structures or interventions feasible and implementable under real conditions and accepted by patients, relatives, and staff?; (3) How can a final implementation and intervention catalog for day hospices be designed?; (4) Is this final catalog of services feasible, reasonable, economical, and effective under everyday conditions in day hospices?

Methods: We planned to perform a multistage investigation, guided by the Medical Research Council Framework for the development and evaluation of complex interventions. In Stage 1, an initial theoretical construct on structures and interventions will be established through an extensive literature and guideline review on day hospices and through qualitative interviews.

The genetic code of living cells has been reprogrammed to enable the site-specific incorporation of hundreds of non-canonical amino acids into proteins, and the encoded synthesis of non-canonical polymers and macrocyclic peptides and depsipeptides. Current methods for engineering orthogonal aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases to acylate new monomers, as required for the expansion and reprogramming of the genetic code, rely on translational readouts and therefore require the monomers to be ribosomal substrates. Orthogonal synthetases cannot be evolved to acylate orthogonal tRNAs with non-canonical monomers (ncMs) that are poor ribosomal substrates, and ribosomes cannot be evolved to polymerize ncMs that cannot be acylated onto orthogonal tRNAs-this co-dependence creates an evolutionary deadlock that has essentially restricted the scope of translation in living cells to α-L-amino acids and closely related hydroxy acids.

Patients with sepsis-associated delirium (SAD) show severe neurological impairment, often require an intensive care unit (ICU) stay and have a high risk of mortality. Hence, useful biomarkers for early detection of SAD are urgently needed. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) and their cargo are known to maintain normal physiology but also have been linked to numerous disease states.
