We present a case series consisting of three female patients in their 30s with presumed autoimmune uveitis resembling Cogan's syndrome following caesarean sections (C-sections) with severe intraoperative bleeding and the use of chitosan-tamponade, exhibiting a combination of varying ocular and auditory symptoms postoperatively. Our patients displayed a range of inflammatory ocular changes, including stromal keratitis, panuveitis, retinal infiltrates, haemorrhages, optic disc swelling, and intraretinal and subretinal fluid, along with otalgia and hearing loss, consistent with typical and atypical Cogan's syndrome. Treatment involved systemic corticosteroids, resulting in variable outcomes.

This study sought to comprehensively evaluate the diagnosis, therapeutic interventions, and outcomes of individuals afflicted with malignant parotid tumors at a tertiary care otolaryngology department in Heilbronn, Germany, spanning the years 2010-2018. The primary objective was to juxtapose this dataset with findings from analogous single and multicenter investigations. We conducted a meticulous analysis of electronic medical records pertaining to 45 patients subjected to primary parotid cancer treatment.

Purpose: This study aims to develop a practical algorithm for utilizing smartphone-based thermal imaging (SBTI) in the perioperative setting and to establish a standardized evaluation method for objectively assessing SBTI images for cutaneous perfusion of pedicled flaps in the face, head, and neck.

Methods: This prospective conducted study, integrated SBTI into the assessment of 16 patients undergoing reconstructive surgery for face and neck defects. Thermal images were captured at four timepoints: after marking (T1), after flap elevation (T2), upon completion of surgery (T3), and 24 h postoperatively (T4).

Chronic skin defects in the head, face and neck pose challenges for closure, especially after multiple surgeries or radiation therapy. We report the case of a woman in her 70s with a chronic occipital wound following squamous cell carcinoma resections, resulting in exposed skull bone. Despite various options, we successfully treated the 4 cm x 5 cm wound with a Kerecis fish skin graft (FSG), observing significant improvement within a week.

Background: The growing prominence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in medicine introduces both transformative possibilities and potential challenges. Our study focuses on the current status and perceptions of AI in Head and Neck Surgery (HNS), examining its utilization, benefits, ethical concerns, and protective measures.

Objectives: The study aims to illuminate the existing landscape of AI in HNS in Germany.

Objective: Successful outcomes in head and neck surgery rely on maintaining perfusion in pedicled skin flaps. Thermal imaging offers a noninvasive means to assess tissue perfusion, potentially aiding in predicting flap viability. This pilot study explores the utility of SBTI (smartphone-based thermal imaging) for predicting flap vitality and monitoring during surgery.

The widespread application of green hydrogen production technologies requires cost reduction of crucial elements. To achieve this, a viable pathway to reduce the iridium loading in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is explored. Herein, a scalable synthesis method based on a photodeposition process for a TiO@IrO core-shell catalyst with a reduced iridium content as low as 40 wt.

Summary: DeGeCI is a command line tool that generates fully automated gene predictions from mitochondrial nucleotide sequences by using a reference database of annotated mitogenomes which is represented as a de Bruijn graph. The input genome is mapped to this graph, creating a subgraph, which is then post-processed by a clustering routine. Version 1.

Introduction: Frey's syndrome, described by Lucy Frey in 1923, is a unique condition characterized by sweating, flushing, and reddening as a direct response to mastication. This phenomenon results from the aberrant regeneration of postganglionic parasympathetic neurons originating from the auriculotemporal nerve and the subsequent acetylcholine secretion induced by masticatory stimuli. Although rare, this syndrome can have multiple underlying causes and is frequently observed, occurring in up to 65% of cases following lateral parotid resections.

This article provides a comprehensive analysis of modern techniques used in the assessment of cutaneous flaps in reconstructive surgery. It emphasizes the importance of preoperative planning and intra- and perioperative assessment of flap perfusion to ensure successful outcomes. Despite technological advancements, direct clinical assessment remains the gold standard.

On January 18, 2024, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued their most recent guidelines for over-the-counter drugs for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Specifically, the organization stated that "Most people with COVID-19 have mild illness and can recover at home. You can treat symptoms with over-the-counter medicines, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), to help you feel better.

Unlabelled: With the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, it has become clear that patients with diabetes are at risk for more severe and fatal COVID-19. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) is a major risk factor for adverse COVID-19 outcomes. The goal of study was to assess the characteristics and outcomes of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 with or without T2D in the hospital and at 10-month follow-up (FU).

Thrombosis and thrombophlebitis of the facial vein represent exceptionally rare diagnoses, particularly when occurring as complications of acute sialadenitis of the submandibular gland. This case report details the experience of a middle-aged man initially presenting at a tertiary care ear, nose and throat department with right submandibular gland sialadenitis. Despite initiating outpatient treatment involving oral antibiotics and sialagogues, the patient returned after a week with persistent and worsening pain, accompanied by swelling of the right submandibular gland and cheek.

In advanced pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (PanNEN), there are little data detailing the frequency of genetic alterations identified in cell free DNA (cfDNA), plasma-tissue concordance of detected alterations, and clinical utility of cfDNA. Patients with metastatic PanNENs underwent cfDNA collection in routine practice. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) of cfDNA and matched tissue when available was performed.

Purpose: Patients at risk for sudden cardiac death may temporarily need a wearable cardioverter-defibrillator (WCD). Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation (CR) has a class I recommendation in patients with cardiac disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and feasibility of undergoing CR with a WCD.

Explainable AI (XAI) is widely viewed as a sine qua non for ever-expanding AI research. A better understanding of the needs of XAI users, as well as human-centered evaluations of explainable models are both a necessity and a challenge. In this paper, we explore how human-computer interaction (HCI) and AI researchers conduct user studies in XAI applications based on a systematic literature review.

Listening effort and fatigue are common experiences when conversing in noisy environments. Much research has investigated listening effort in relation to listening demand using the speech-in-noise paradigm. Recent conceptualizations of listening effort postulate that mental fatigue should result in decreased arousal and a reluctance to invest further effort, particularly when the effort is not worthwhile.

To respond to auxin, the chief orchestrator of their multicellularity, plants evolved multiple receptor systems and signal transduction cascades. Despite decades of research, however, we are still lacking a satisfactory synthesis of various auxin signaling mechanisms. The chief discrepancy and historical controversy of the field is that of rapid and slow auxin effects on plant physiology and development.

Background: The efficiency of pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) depends on the durability of RF lesions. Recent studies documented sustained continuity of ablation lines, improvements in durability, and expected clinical outcomes through altered settings in duration and power. However, the ablation strategy has not been adapted to this new approach and different biophysics of lesion formation.
