The antimicrobial potential of traditional remedies of Indigenous peoples from Canada against MRSA planktonic and biofilm bacteria in wound infection mimetic conditions.

Methicillin-resistant (MRSA) is the leading cause of wound infections, often progressing into serious invasive bloodstream infections. MRSA disproportionately affects Indigenous peoples in Canada with higher rates of skin and wound infections, an example of persistent gaps in health outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples precipitated by the legacy of colonialism. Conversely, Indigenous peoples have long used natural remedies for infections and other diseases; however, their knowledge was rarely considered for modern medicine.

Aboriginal youth's perceptions of traditional and commercial tobacco in Canada.

Although tobacco has played an important role in Aboriginal culture for millennia, its more recent recreational use has resulted in serious health concerns among Aboriginal users. In Canada, First Nations youth have higher smoking rates than non-Aboriginal youth. The goals of this study were to examine Aboriginal youth's perceptions of traditional and commercial tobacco and to evaluate perception changes following workshops on traditional uses of tobacco by Elders and other community members, native plants used in ceremony and health impacts of cigarette smoking.

Exploring and revitalizing Indigenous food networks in Saskatchewan, Canada, as a way to improve food security.

The project discussed in this paper was designed to expand research and instigate revitalization of Indigenous food networks in Saskatchewan, Canada, by exploring the current state of local Indigenous food networks, creating a Facebook page, organizing volunteer opportunities and surveying workshop participants regarding their knowledge and interest in Indigenous foods. The survey included Likert scale questions and qualitative questions. Project activities and survey results are discussed using statistical and qualitative analysis of the themes.
