Organisms are constantly challenged by pathogens and pests, which can drive the evolution of growth-defense strategies. Plant stomata are essential for gas exchange during photosynthesis and conceptually lie at the intersection of the physiological demands of growth and exposure to foliar fungal pathogens. Compassion fatigue (CF), or vicarious traumatization, is a state of physical/emotional distress that results from caring for those experiencing pain. We sought to characterize levels of CF in intensive care unit (ICU) and oncology nursing populations with subanalyses comparing specific personal/professional demographic factors. The Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL) scale, a validated tool for assessing CF, burnout (BO), and compassion satisfaction (CS), was distributed to the ICU and oncology divisions of a community hospital.

Plant plasma membrane intrinsic proteins (PIPs) cluster in two evolutionary subgroups, PIP1 and PIP2, with different aquaporin activities when expressed in Xenopus oocytes. Maize ZmPIP1;1 and ZmPIP1;2 do not increase the osmotic water permeability coefficient (Pf), whereas ZmPIP2;1, ZmPIP2;4, and ZmPIP2;5 do. Here, we show that coexpression of the nonfunctional ZmPIP1;2 and the functional ZmPIP2;1, ZmPIP2;4, or ZmPIP2;5 resulted in an increase in Pf that was dependent on the amount of injected ZmPIP1;2 complementary RNA.

The timed destruction of cell cycle regulatory proteins is of key importance in controlling cell cycle progression in eukaryotes. Recently, Skp1 from yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) was shown to play an important role in the ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis of these proteins via the Skp1-Cdc53-F-box (SCF) pathway. Here we describe the fortuitous cloning of cDNAs for two Skp1 homologues from the plant Arabidopsis thaliana on account of their ability to activate reporter gene expression in yeast directed by the cyt-1 element from the promoter of the Agrobacterium tumefaciens T-cyt gene, which is essential for expression of the gene in plants.

A study was made of the effects of diets with varying degree of caloricity reduction at the expense of the decreased content of carbohydrates and fat (1200, 600, 300 kcal and calorie-free "zero" diet) on some indicators of lipid, carbohydrate, protein and mineral metabolism comparatively to the patients' clinical status. A group of patients receiving the diet with a caloricity of 1800 kcal served as control. It was shown that the diet with an average reduction of caloricity (1200 kcal) may be applied to the treatment of obese patients for a long period of time both on in- and outpatient basis.
