Ninety Holstein dairy cows (24 primiparous, 66 multiparous [mean parity 3.0]) were fed diets containing either 150, 160 or 170 g CP/kg DM from 8 - 180 DIM with all diets designed to supply at least 100% MP requirements. On d 181, half of the cows on each treatment changed to a diet containing 140 g CP/kg DM (supplying 100% MP requirements), with the remaining cows continuing to be offered their original treatment diets.

Clinical studies have consistently shown that neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, and Huntington's disease show absent or low levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Despite this relationship between BDNF and ND, only a few ND animal models have been able to recapitulate the low BDNF state, thereby hindering research into the therapeutic targeting of this important neurotrophic factor. At the individual cow level, suboptimum fertility, mastitis, negative energy balance, and ketosis are major issues in dairy farming. These problems are widespread on dairy farms and have an important economic impact. The objectives of this study were (1) to assess the potential of milk mid-infrared (MIR) spectra to predict key biomarkers of energy deficit (citrate, isocitrate, glucose-6 phosphate [glucose-6P], free glucose), ketosis (β-hydroxybutyrate [BHB] and acetone), mastitis (N-acetyl-β-d-glucosaminidase activity [NAGase] and lactate dehydrogenase), and fertility (progesterone); (2) to test alternative methodologies to partial least squares (PLS) regression to better account for the specific asymmetric distribution of the biomarkers; and (3) to create robust models by merging large datasets from 5 international or national projects.

Daily harvesting of fresh grass for housed livestock when its nutritive value is high (Zero-grazing) is a labour-intensive process which requires a consistent supply of grass at the optimum growth stage. An alternative approach which may save on labour and require less time spent on grassland management each day, involves harvesting and ensiling herbage on a number of occasions (every 4 weeks approximately) during the growing season when it is at the same nutritive value as herbage used for zero-grazing. In this short review we highlight the importance and the capabilities of composition spread alloy films (CSAFs) for the high-throughput study and comprehensive understanding of corrosion passivation in multicomponent alloys, ABC, spanning composition space, ∈ [0, 1] and ∈ [0, 1 - ]. After first establishing the mechanistic issues associated with corrosion, and the problems arising from the corrosion of metals, we establish the need for further studying and understanding the mechanisms of alloy corrosion and corrosion passivation. In particular, we highlight the development of new combinatorial methods that circumvent the experimental bottleneck associated with preparing, characterizing, and testing many alloy samples having common components at different compositions.
