Using a 24 hour monitoring of the systo-diastolic blood pressure, 127 new born babies were studied in the first five days of life. 45 of these new born babies were premature (35 +/- 1 week) and 82 full-term. The results showed an overlap in the systo-diastolic blood pressure in the 2 groups of subjects with a rise and fall in pressure in the 24 hour period and no fall in pressure during the night typical to a healthy adult.

Background: The aim of the study was to analyze the results of surgical treatment in early and advanced primary gastric lymphoma and to evaluate predictive factors for long-term outcome.

Material And Methods: A retrospective study of 92 patients resected for primary gastric lymphoma was conducted. Sixty-eight (74%) patients underwent a curative resection 10 (11%) patients had palliative resection and 14 (15%) patients were deemed unresectable: 33 patients (36%) had a stage IE tumor, 12 (13%) stage IIE1, 22 (24%) IIE2 and 25 (27%) stage IVE.

The function of the GABAergic system was examined in 20 subjects with heroin dependence and abuse, 2 months after detoxification, and in 10 healthy volunteers, by measuring the growth hormone (GH) response to a challenge with the GABA B receptor agonist baclofen. Ten heroin addicts had comorbid anxiety disorder (Group A), while the other ten had heroin addiction uncomplicated by Axis I and II psychopathologies (Group B). GH responses to baclofen stimulation of Group A patients were significantly blunted, while those of Group B subjects did not differ from responses of healthy volunteers.

Seven cases of Alcaligenes xylosoxidans bacteremia and/or respiratory disease in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are described. Reported only thrice previously in this setting, these bacterial complications occurred during different phases of HIV infection and were associated with leukopenia-neutropenia in four patients and a central vascular catheter in two. Although the majority of cases were diagnosed after day 3 of hospitalization, a distinct source of infection was never identified.

The authors consider 12 cases of breast-reconstruction after mastectomy, made with the Holmstrom's flap, to verify the validity and the real utility of this way of reconstruction. It has been made a follow-up of 4 years, to verify, in course of time, the characteristics of the reconstructed breasts. All the patients have been operated in a general surgery department.

A retrospective survey of non-opportunistic bacterial pathogens isolated from blood cultures of patients with HIV disease has been carried out for a 6-year period, and the antibiotic susceptibility of the 748 microorganisms cultured from 682 consecutive patients, has been evaluated. Gram-positive organisms significantly prevailed over gram-negative ones, with Staphylococcus aureus, coagulase-negative staphylococci, Enterococcus faecalis, Xantomonas maltophilia, Salmonella and Pseudomonas sp. as the most common isolates, and Rhodococcus equi, Serratia, Acinetobacter and Alcaligenes sp.

Listeriosis is an emerging opportunistic infection in the immunocompromised host. A case of sepsis due to Listeria monocytogenes in a patient with advanced HIV infection and severe neutropenia, treated for an underlying non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, is described. Therapy with cotrimoxazole associated with rHuG-CSF (filgrastim) led to a rapidly favourable clinical and microbiological outcome, and to the correction of concurrent neutropenia.

The general surgical profile of octogenarians compared with that of younger patients, and risk factors predictive of operative mortality and morbidity, were determined retrospectively using a computer database for all patients admitted between 1989 and 1993. There were 934 admissions of octogenarians and surgery was performed in 447 cases (47.9 percent).

Background: As the number of people over the age of 80 years is rapidly increasing, it may be expected that demand for surgical care for the elderly will also rise during the next decade thus contributing to a change in surgeon attitude.

Aim Of The Study: Because little literature is available on the surgical care requested by the over eighties, the aim of this study is to focus on the present surgical demand of the octogenarians in general surgical practice.

Methods: Two hundred-five admissions of 187 patients of above 80 years during one year were recorded retrospectively and statistical evaluation (Fisher exact test or Chi square test) of main clinical features was performed.

In diabetic patients, the pathophysiologic mechanisms of exercise-induced left ventricular (LV) dysfunction remain controversial. In this study, the role of myocardial contractility recruitment in determining an abnormal LV response to isometric or dynamic exercise has been investigated in 14 diabetic patients with autonomic dysfunction. Ischemic heart disease was excluded by the absence of LV wall motion abnormalities induced by isotonic and isometric exercise and by coronary angiography.

Plasmid NAH7 was transferred from Pseudomonas putida PpG7 to P. putida R20 [R20(NAH7)], an antagonist of Pythium ultimum. The plasmid did not affect growth or survival of R20(NAH7) and was stably maintained under nonselective conditions in broth and soil and on sugar beet seeds.

Respiration and growth of Pseudomonas putida PpG7, containing catabolic plasmid NAH7, was determined in three agricultural field soils amended with the carbon source salicylate. The addition of salicylate to soil significantly increased the population of PpG7. However, there was a lack of relationship between microbial numbers and activity as determined by evolution of CO(2).

A study was done on 52 upper denture wearers, randomly selected among the residents of two nursing-homes. The results show that the prevalence of Candida albicans in the denture is significantly higher than that in the mucosa. It was also possible to establish a significant relationship between the clinical patterns and the microbiological findings.

The effect of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid on alcohol consumption and alcohol craving in alcoholics was investigated in a randomized double-blind study versus placebo. Patients were treated as outpatients during a three month period either with gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (50 mg/kg/day, divided into three daily doses) or with placebo. Of the 82 alcoholics that entered the study, 71 completed it, 36 in the gamma-hydroxybutyric acid and 35 in the placebo group.
