Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis, to whose pathogenesis neoplastic and immune-mediated mechanisms contribute. Mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)-inhibitors have antiproliferative and immunosuppressive properties. We tested in this study, the efficacy and safety of the mTOR-inhibitor sirolimus (SRL) plus prednisone (PDN) in patients with ECD.

Detection of circulating plasma cells (PCs) in multiple myeloma (MM) patients is a well-known prognostic factor. We evaluated circulating PCs by flow cytometry (FC) in 104 patients with active MM at diagnosis by gating on CD38(+)  CD45(-) cells and examined their relationship with cytogenetic risk. Patients had an average follow-up of 36 months.

Biomarkers for patient selection are essential for the successful and rapid development of emerging targeted anti-cancer therapeutics. In this study, we report the discovery of a novel patient selection strategy for the p53-HDM2 inhibitor NVP-CGM097, currently under evaluation in clinical trials. By intersecting high-throughput cell line sensitivity data with genomic data, we have identified a gene expression signature consisting of 13 up-regulated genes that predicts for sensitivity to NVP-CGM097 in both cell lines and in patient-derived tumor xenograft models.

Background: With the advance of modern laparoscopic technology, laparoscopic colorectal surgery and laparoscopic liver surgery are both worldwide accepted. Preliminary brief series have shown the feasibility of combined laparoscopic resection of colorectal cancer (CRC) and synchronous colorectal liver metastases (SCRLM). We aim to report a large International multicenter series of laparoscopic simultaneous resection of CRC and SCRLM.

Aim: Our study aim was to investigate the degree of adherence to international recommendations for cutaneous melanoma pathology reports at the population level by a EUROCARE high resolution study.

Methods: The availability of nine characteristics - predominant cell type, tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes, mitotic index, histological subtype, growth phase, Clark level, Breslow thickness, ulceration, and sentinel-node biopsy - was examined on pathology reports of a random sample of 636 cases diagnosed in 2003-2005 in seven Italian cancer registries: Biella, Ferrara, Firenze, Latina, Ragusa, Reggio Emilia, Romagna. The odds of having (versus not having) information for all four core characteristics (last four listed above) were estimated.

Surgical site infections (SSIs) and early urinary tract infections (UTIs) are well recognized postoperative kidney transplant complications. These complications seldom lead to graft loss, although they may result in significant morbidity with prolonged hospitalization. Thus, perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis (PAP) has traditionally been used in this setting.

Background: The identification of modifiable perioperative risk factors in patients undergoing laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) should aid the selection of appropriate surgical procedures and thus improve further the outcomes associated with LLR. The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the risk factors for postoperative morbidity associated with laparoscopic liver surgery.

Methods: All patients who underwent elective LLR between January 1999 and December 2012 were included.

Background: Dietary and lifestyle modifications, which are commonly proposed to overweight or obese youth, lack efficacy in individuals who are severely obese. Early results with bariatric procedures in obese adolescents suggest that weight loss and safety are comparable or better than seen in adults. One of these procedures, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, is commonly performed using multiple ports.

Objectives: to assess the agreement on row data and incidence rates between regional mesothelioma registries (CORs) and population cancer registries (CRs) in Italy, and to contribute in harmonizing the procedures used in identifying the date of incidence and the morphology of mesothelioma cases.

Setting E Participants: the mesothelioma cases registered by 19 CRs and by 9 out of 19 CORs were included in the study. Some CORs were not able to participate in the study, because there were no active CRs in their areas.

Percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (PRFA) of renal malignancies is currently a therapeutic option for patients who are not able to undergo surgery. Some authors consider PRFA as the therapeutic standard in the treatment of renal neoplasms in non-operable patients due to comorbid conditions and in patients with mild-moderate renal failure, to preserve residual renal functionality. The use of PRFA has become more and more widespread due to a rise in the incidental detection of renal cell carcinomas with the ever-increasing use of Imaging for the study of abdominal diseases.

Introduction: The incidence of cancer among residents in sites contaminated by pollutants with a possible health impact is not adequately studied. In Italy, SENTIERI Project (Epidemiological study of residents in National Priority Contaminated Sites, NPCSs) was implemented to study major health outcomes for residents in 44 NPCSs.

Methods: The Italian Association of Cancer Registries (AIRTUM) records cancer incidence in 23 NPCSs.

Background: Endoscopic treatment of gastric leaks (GL) following sleeve gastrectomy (SG) involves different techniques; however, standard management is not yet established. We report our experience about endoscopic internal drainage of leaks using pigtail stents coupled with enteral nutrition (EDEN) for 4 to 6 weeks until healing is achieved.

Methods: In 21 pts (18 F, 41 years), one or two plastic pigtail stents were delivered across the leak 25.

Aim: The increased incidence of malignancy and the concern for higher rate of complications with laparoscopic resection of larger tumors typically limits laparoscopic adrenalectomy to small adrenal masses. We used our prospectively collected database to compare laparoscopic adrenalectomy outcomes between small and large adrenal tumors.

Methods: Operative details and outcomes were compared by adrenal mass size size: Group A≤4 cm and Group B>4 cm, for consecutive laparoscopic adrenalectomies performed between 2009 and 2013.
