Purpose: This multinational, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, phase III trial assessed the efficacy and tolerability of the oral platinum analog satraplatin in patients with metastatic castrate-refractory prostate cancer (CRPC) experiencing progression after one prior chemotherapy regimen.
Patients And Methods: Nine hundred fifty patients were randomly assigned (2:1) to receive oral satraplatin (n = 635) 80 mg/m(2) on days 1 to 5 of a 35-day cycle and prednisone 5 mg twice daily or placebo (n = 315) and prednisone 5 mg twice daily. Primary end points were progression-free survival and overall survival (OS).
During acute myocardial ischemia, reentrant episodes may lead to ventricular fibrillation (VF), giving rise to potentially mortal arrhythmias. VF has been traditionally related to dispersion of refractoriness and more recently to the source-sink relationship. Our goal is to theoretically investigate the relative role of dispersion of refractoriness and source-sink mismatch in vulnerability to reentry in the specific situation of regional myocardial acute ischemia.

Purpose: Robotic stereotactic radioablation (RSR) allows stereotactic irradiation of thoracic tumors; however, it has never been used for breast tumors and may have a real potential. We conducted a Phase I study, including neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT), a two-level dose-escalation study (6.5 Gy x 3 fractions and 7.

Patients And Method: In order to define the interest of treating breast tumors with CK, we have conducted a phase I study with a dose escalation, adding CK to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in view of allowing conservative treatment for patients that will not have surgery in first intent.
Advanced ovarian carcinoma in early progression (<6 months) (AOCEP) is considered resistant to most cytotoxic drugs. Gemcitabine (GE) and oxaliplatin (OXA) have shown single-agent activity in relapsed ovarian cancer. Their combination was tested in patients with AOCEP in phase II study.

Several recent studies suggest that depressive disorders have a negative impact on the overall survival in oncology. The care of the depressed patient in oncology would therefore request early detection prior to adapted drug treatment and psychotherapy interventions.

Objective: To assess the routine use of first-line docetaxel-based chemotherapy in CRPC patients aged >75 yr.
Design, Setting, And Participants: We reviewed the clinical files of 175 patients aged > or =75 yr with CRPC treated with first-line docetaxel in nine French tertiary care cancer centres from 2000 to 2007.
The prodrug [(2R,4S)-4-(3-chlorophenyl)-2-[(3,5-dimethyl-4-(4'-hydroxy-3'-isopropylbenzyl)phenoxy)methyl]-2-oxido-[1,3,2]-dioxaphosphonane (MB07811)] of a novel phosphonate-containing thyroid hormone receptor agonist [3,5-dimethyl-4-(4'-hydroxy-3'-isopropylbenzyl)phenoxylmethylphosphonic acid (MB07344)] is the first application of the HepDirect liver-targeting approach to a non-nucleotide agent. The disposition of MB07811 was characterized in rat, dog, and monkey to assess its liver specificity, which is essential in limiting the extrahepatic side effects associated with this class of lipid-lowering agents. MB07811 was converted to MB07344 in liver microsomes from all species tested (CL(int) 1.

Patients with MBC represent a heterogeneous group whose prognosis and outcome may be dependent on host factors. The purpose of the present study was dual: first, to draw up a list of factors easily available in everyday clinical practice requiring no sophisticated or costly methods and second, to provide results from a large cohort of women who underwent diagnostic and treatment at a single institution.

The aim of this study was to compare the standard therapeutic strategy with a novel strategy of weekly administration of topotecan. The primary endpoints were dose density and overall tolerance.

Qualitative data on the elemental composition of the blue pigments obtained using both techniques show a good agreement. Moreover, the results clearly illustrate that potters utilized different kinds of cobalt pigments in different historical periods.

This paper combines high-performance computing and grid computing technologies to accelerate multiple executions of a biomedical application that simulates the action potential propagation on cardiac tissues. First, a parallelization strategy was employed to accelerate the execution of simulations on a cluster of personal computers (PCs). Then, grid computing was employed to concurrently perform the multiple simulations that compose the cardiac case studies on the resources of a grid deployment, by means of a service-oriented approach.

Aminoaldehydes are products of polyamine degradation and are known to be reactive metabolites that are toxic to living cells at high concentrations. These compounds are catabolized by aminoaldehyde dehydrogenases, which are enzymes that contain a nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide coenzyme. Aminoaldehyde dehydrogenase from Pisum sativum was overexpressed in Escherichia coli, purified and crystallized using the hanging-drop method.

The method assumes that P(E',E) can be described by a sum of exponential functions and that all the trajectories with an initial impact parameter beyond a certain critical value will contribute only to the elastic peak [P(E',E) for E'=E]. This approach is applied to H2O-H2O collisions at different initial vibrational energies of the excited molecules and temperatures of bath gas.

Patients And Methods: Data from 250 consecutive metastatic HRPC patients treated with chemotherapy between February 2000 and November 2006 were retrospectively analysed. At least three PSA assays were required within 3 months before chemotherapy.
Objectives: To investigate whether some aspects of patient or tumor characteristics influence the timing of local recurrence (LR) in breast cancer treated conservatively, and to assess the impact of the timing of LR on patient outcome.
Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients treated with conservative breast surgery followed by radiotherapy for breast carcinoma who developed LR. Out of 2,008 cases treated in our Institute between 1977 and 2002, 180 ipsilateral LR were observed.
We present an analytical procedure based on laser ablation mass spectrometry (LAMS) in order to detect and quantify arsenic and calcium in soil samples and we analyze the diverse factors that influence the precision of LAMS, such as laser fluence and matrix effect. The results indicate that a Zn matrix is a good choice for the analysis of those metals in soil samples. This work also provides a method for the direct determination of As in soil samples whose concentrations are lower than 100 ppm with a 70 ppm minimum detection limits (MDL).

Sudden cardiac death is mainly provoked by arrhythmogenic processes. During myocardial ischemia many malignant arrhythmias, such as reentry, take place and can degenerate into ventricular fibrillation. It is thus of great interest to unravel the intricate mechanisms underlying the initiation and maintenance of a reentry.
