Performance of Comprehensive Complication Index and Clavien-Dindo Complication Scoring System in Liver Surgery for Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Background: We aimed to assess the ability of comprehensive complication index (CCI) and Clavien-Dindo complication (CDC) scale to predict excessive length of hospital stay (e-LOS) in patients undergoing liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma.

Methods: Patients were identified from an Italian multi-institutional database and randomly selected to be included in either a derivation or validation set. Multivariate logistic regression models and ROC curve analysis including either CCI or CDC as predictors of e-LOS were fitted to compare predictive performance.

Fundamental scattering quantities for the determination of reflectance and transmittance.

The bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) and the bidirectional scattering - surface reflectance distribution function (BSSRDF), which relate radiance at the surface to irradiance and radiant flux, respectively, are regarded as the most fundamental scattering quantities used to determine the reflectance of objects. However, for materials where the optical radiation is transmitted under the surface, this radiance depends not only on irradiance and radiant flux, but also on the size of the irradiated area of the surface. This article provides insight into such dependence under the special condition in which the radiance is evaluated within the irradiated area and, consequently, is produced by both the insurface reflection and the subsurface scattering, in contrast to the situation in which the radiance is evaluated at non-irradiated areas and only subsurface scattering contributes.

Association between estimated whole-brain radiofrequency electromagnetic fields dose and cognitive function in preadolescents and adolescents.

Objective: To investigate the association between estimated whole-brain radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) dose, using an improved integrated RF-EMF exposure model, and cognitive function in preadolescents and adolescents.

Methods: Cross-sectional analysis in preadolescents aged 9-11 years and adolescents aged 17-18 years from the Dutch Amsterdam Born Children and their Development Study (n = 1664 preadolescents) and the Spanish INfancia y Medio Ambiente Project (n = 1288 preadolescents and n = 261 adolescents), two population-based birth cohort studies. Overall whole-brain RF-EMF doses (mJ/kg/day) were estimated for several RF-EMF sources together including mobile and Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications phone calls (named phone calls), other mobile phone uses than calling, tablet use, laptop use (named screen activities), and far-field sources.

Measurement of the Low-Energy Antideuteron Inelastic Cross Section.

In this Letter, we report the first measurement of the inelastic cross section for antideuteron-nucleus interactions at low particle momenta, covering a range of 0.3≤p<4  GeV/c. The measurement is carried out using p-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon pair of sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.

Dermestes maculatus (Coleoptera: Dermestidae) development under fluoxetine effect using two drug administration models.

Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, commonly used for the treatment of a variety of psychopathological conditions. As such, fluoxetine may be expected to appear in clinical and forensic cases. Dermestes maculatus De Geer (Coleoptera: Dermestidae) has been recognized as a relevant component of the insect fauna associated with decomposing human and animal remains.

Serum amylase elevation following pancreatoduodenectomy with pancreatogastrostomy is strongly associated with major complications.

Background: Recent reports suggest that, following pancreatic resection, serum amylase elevation (SAE) may be a surrogate indicator of post-operative acute pancreatitis (PAP) and predict post-operative pancreatic fistula (POPF). However, POPF may not account for the majority of complications when pancreatoenteric continuity is restored by pancreatogastrostomy. We aimed to evaluate, among patients undergoing pancreatoduodenectomy with pancreatogastrostomy, the correlation between SAE, radiological changes consistent with PAP and types of post-operative complications overall and specific for pancreatic surgery.

Radiation dose reduction for 3D angiography images in pediatric and congenital cardiology.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of simulated reduced-dose three-dimensional angiography (3DA) on the accuracy and precision of linear measurements derived from 3DA datasets.

Background: Three-dimensional angiography is performed during X-ray guided interventional procedures to aid diagnosis and inform treatment strategies for children and adults with congenital heart disease. However, 3DA contributes substantially to patient radiation dose and may lead to an increased radiation-induced cancer risk.

Numerical Analysis of Bowing Phenomenon Due to Thermal Stresses in Marble Slabs.

Bowing is a pathology known by the deformation experienced in some external covering systems in ornamental stones, especially in marble, and thermal action is one of the key factors that lead to this degradation. Previous studies presented remarkable contributions about the mechanical behavior of bowing but they were based on classical beam's theory and improper assumptions might mislead the evaluation of internal stresses. This study proposes to evaluate internal stresses in bowing due to thermal loading considering the true deformed shape in continuum media.

Impact of anthropometric data on technical difficulty of laparoscopic liver of resections of segments 7 and 8: the CHALLENGE index.

Background: The high technical difficulty of using a laparoscopic approach to reach the posterosuperior liver segments is mainly associated with their poor accessibility. This study was performed to analyze correlations between anthropometric data and intraoperative outcomes.

Study Design: All patients who underwent segmentectomy or wedge laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) of segments seven and/or eight from June 2012 to November 2019 were retrospectively analyzed.

Stratification of Major Hepatectomies According to Their Outcome: Analysis of 2212 Consecutive Open Resections in Patients Without Cirrhosis.

Objective: To stratify major hepatectomies (MajHs) according to their outcomes.

Summary Of Background Data: MajHs are associated with non-negligible operative risks, but they include a wide range of procedures. Detailed depiction of the outcomes of different MajHs is the basis for a new classification of liver resections.

Laparoscopic right posterior anatomic liver resections with Glissonean pedicle-first and venous craniocaudal approach.

Background: Laparoscopic segment 7 segmentectomy and segment 6-7 bisegmentectomy are challenging resections because of the posterior position and the lack of landmarks. The anatomy of the right posterior Glissonean pedicle and the caudal view of laparoscopy make such resections suitable for the Glissonean pedicle-first approach.

Methods: The study population included all consecutive patients treated with laparoscopic liver resection from August 2019 to February 2020.

Italian weedy rice-A case of de-domestication?

Weedy rice is a representative of the extensive group of feral weeds that derive from crops, but has returned to the lifestyle of a wild species. These weeds develop either from a hybridization of crops with wild relatives (exoferality), or by mutation of crops to weedy forms (endoferality). Due to the close relation of weed and crop, the methods for weed-targeted containment are limited to date.

Goniochromatic assessment of gray scales for color change.

The dependence of color differences on the illumination and viewing directions for two widely used gray scales for color change (SDCE and AATCC) was evaluated through measuring the spectral bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) by a gonio-spectrophotometer of metrological quality. Large incidence and viewing angles must be specially avoided using these gray scales because, in these conditions, color differences vary considerably from those established in ISO 105-A02 and ASTM D2616-12. While the visual appearance of the SDCE and AATCC gray scales for color change is similar, our results indicate that their goniochromatic properties are different.

Comparison of laparoscopic ultrasound and liver-specific magnetic resonance imaging for staging colorectal liver metastases.

Background: Intraoperative liver ultrasound appears superior to liver-specific contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to stage colorectal liver metastases (CRLMs). Most of the data come from studies on open surgery. Laparoscopic ultrasound (LUS) is technically demanding and its reliability is poor investigated.

Probing the Effects of Strong Electromagnetic Fields with Charge-Dependent Directed Flow in Pb-Pb Collisions at the LHC.

The first measurement at the LHC of charge-dependent directed flow (v_{1}) relative to the spectator plane is presented for Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV. Results are reported for charged hadrons and D^{0} mesons for the transverse momentum intervals p_{T}>0.

Evidence of Spin-Orbital Angular Momentum Interactions in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions.

The first evidence of spin alignment of vector mesons (K^{*0} and ϕ) in heavy-ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is reported. The spin density matrix element ρ_{00} is measured at midrapidity (|y|<0.5) in Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy (sqrt[s_{NN}]) of 2.

Inositols and metabolic disorders: From farm to bedside.

Inositol and its derivates are catching interest in metabolism since taking part in several physiological processes, including endocrine modulation. Through several mechanisms mostly mediated by insulin signaling, these compounds regulate the activities of several hormones and are essential in oocytes maturation. It is interesting to point out the contribution of an inositol deficiency in the development of several diseases, mainly in the metabolic and endocrine setting.

First-line imatinib vs second- and third-generation TKIs for chronic-phase CML: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Imatinib, the first tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), improves overall survival (OS), but the introduction of newer TKIs requires the definition of the optimal first-line TKI for newly diagnosed Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph+) chronic-phase (CP) CML. This systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) compares the efficacy and safety of imatinib vs second-generation (dasatinib, nilotinib, bosutinib) and third-generation TKIs (ponatinib) in adults with newly diagnosed Ph+ CP CML, concentrating on OS, progression-free survival (PFS), and hematological and nonhematological adverse events. The quality of the evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) method.

The Italian National Registry for minimally invasive pancreatic surgery: an initiative of the Italian Group of Minimally Invasive Pancreas Surgery (IGoMIPS).

The value of minimally invasive pancreatic surgery (MIPS) is still uncertain, despite the growing number of publications, including reviews and meta-analyses, and the quick diffusion of these procedures worldwide. The Italian Group of Minimally Invasive Pancreas Surgery (IGoMIPS) was created under the auspices of three Scientific Societies: Associazione Italiana Studio Pancreas (AISP), Associazione Italiana Chirurgia Epato-Bilio-Pancreatica (AICEP, former IT-IHPBA), and Società Italiana di Chirurgia Endoscopica (SICE). The main aim of IGoMIPS is to develop and implement a national registry for MIPS.
