Acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AE-COPD) are detrimental events in the natural history of COPD, but the risk factors associated with future exacerbations in the absence of a history of recent exacerbations are not fully understood. To identify risk factors for COPD exacerbations among participants in the Genetic Epidemiology of COPD Study (COPDGene) without a history of exacerbation in the previous year. We identified participants with a smoking history enrolled in COPDGene who had COPD (defined as forced expiratory volume in 1 second [FEV]/forced vital capacity < 0.

Liberation from mechanical ventilation is one of the most important decisions in the intensive care unit (ICU), as extubation failure is associated with worse outcomes. Determining readiness to extubate can be challenging in complex patients and lead to provider stress. Here, we provide our approach to teaching liberation from mechanical ventilation for learners in the ICU.

Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), sometimes referred to as white graphene, receives growing interest in the scientific community, especially when combined into van der Waals (vdW) homo- and heterostacks, in which novel and interesting phenomena may arise. hBN is also commonly used in combination with two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). The realization of hBN-encapsulated TMDC homo- and heterostacks can indeed offer opportunities to investigate and compare TMDC excitonic properties in various stacking configurations.

Optical nonlinearities can be strongly enhanced by operating in the so-called near-zero-index (NZI) regime, where the real part of the refractive index of the system under investigation approaches zero. Here we experimentally demonstrate semi-degenerate four-wave mixing (FWM) in aluminum zinc oxide thin films generating radiation tunable in the visible spectral region, where the material is highly transparent. To this end, we employed an intense pump (787 nm) and a seed tunable in the NIR window (1100-1500 nm) to generate a visible idler wave (530-620 nm).

Excitons dominate the light absorption and re-emission spectra of monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMD). Microscopic investigations of the excitonic response in TMD almost invariably extract information from the radiative recombination step, which only constitutes one part of the picture. Here, by exploiting imaging spectroscopic ellipsometry (ISE), we investigate the spatial dependence of the dielectric function of chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-grown WS flakes with a microscopic lateral resolution, thus providing information about the spatially varying, exciton-induced light absorption in the monolayer WS.

The femtosecond evolution of the electronic temperature of laser-excited gold nanoparticles is measured, by means of ultrafast time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy induced by extreme-ultraviolet radiation pulses. The temperature of the electron gas is deduced by recording and fitting high-resolution photo emission spectra around the Fermi edge of gold nanoparticles providing a direct, unambiguous picture of the ultrafast electron-gas dynamics. These results will be instrumental to the refinement of existing models of femtosecond processes in laterally-confined and bulk condensed-matter systems, and for understanding more deeply the role of hot electrons in technological applications.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common respiratory disorder with significant morbidity and mortality. Despite its prevalence, COPD is underdiagnosed, and many patients do not receive a diagnosis until the disease is clinically advanced. Recent basic science and clinical research have focused on the early physiologic and pathobiologic changes in COPD with the hopes of improving diagnosis, providing targets for disease-modifying therapy, and identifying patients most likely to benefit from early intervention.

Background: Lung cancer risk prediction models do not routinely incorporate imaging metrics available on low-dose CT (LDCT) imaging of the chest ordered for lung cancer screening.

Research Question: What is the association between quantitative emphysema measured on LDCT imaging and lung cancer incidence and mortality, all-cause mortality, and airflow obstruction in individuals who currently or formerly smoked and are undergoing lung cancer screening?

Study Design And Methods: In 7,262 participants in the CT arm of the National Lung Screening Trial, percent low attenuation area (%LAA) was defined as the percentage of lung volume with voxels less than -950 Hounsfield units on the baseline examination. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards models, adjusting for competing risks where appropriate, were built to test for association between %LAA and lung cancer incidence, lung cancer mortality, and all-cause mortality with censoring at 6 years.

Time-varying metasurfaces are emerging as a powerful instrument for the dynamical control of the electromagnetic properties of a propagating wave. Here we demonstrate an efficient time-varying metasurface based on plasmonic nano-antennas strongly coupled to an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) deeply subwavelength film. The plasmonic resonance of the metal resonators strongly interacts with the optical ENZ modes, providing a Rabi level spitting of ∼30%.

Article Synopsis
  • Interferometric effects between two opposing beams can create coherent modulation in how much electromagnetic radiation is absorbed, achieving 100% efficiency even in tiny structures.
  • Coherent perfect absorption (CPA) typically relies on engineered optical properties, but this study presents a way to achieve broadband CPA using unpatterned epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) films.
  • By utilizing Kerr optical nonlinearities, the research allows for dynamic tuning of the absorption properties, paving the way for efficient and adjustable on-chip devices.

In the context of underwater robotics, the visual degradation induced by the medium properties make difficult the exclusive use of cameras for localization purpose. Hence, many underwater localization methods are based on expensive navigation sensors associated with acoustic positioning. On the other hand, pure visual localization methods have shown great potential in underwater localization but the challenging conditions, such as the presence of turbidity and dynamism, remain complex to tackle.

Electromagnetically-heated metal nanoparticles can be exploited as efficient heat sources at the nanoscale. The assessment of their temperature is, however, often performed indirectly by modelling their temperature-dependent dielectric response. Direct measurements of the optical properties of metallic nanoparticles in equilibrium with a thermodynamic bath provide a calibration of their thermo-optical response, to be exploited for refining current thermoplasmonic models or whenever direct temperature assessments are practically unfeasible.

In this work, we present the results of the opto⁻electro⁻mechanical characterization of tunable micro-lenses, Tlens, performed with a single-spot optical measuring system. Tested devices are composed of a transparent soft polymer layer that is deposited on a supporting glass substrate and is covered by a glass membrane with a thin-film piezoelectric actuator on top. Near-infrared optical low-coherence reflectometry is exploited for both static and low-frequency dynamic analyses in the time domain.

Materials with a spatially uniform but temporally varying optical response have applications ranging from magnetic field-free optical isolators to fundamental studies of quantum field theories. However, these effects typically become relevant only for time variations oscillating at optical frequencies, thus presenting a significant hurdle that severely limits the realization of such conditions. Here we present a thin-film material with a permittivity that pulsates (uniformly in space) at optical frequencies and realizes a time-reversing medium of the form originally proposed by Pendry [Science 322, 71 (2008)SCIEAS0036-807510.

Fabry-Pérot metal-insulator-metal (MIM) nanocavities are widely used in nanophotonic applications due to their extraordinary electromagnetic properties and deeply subwavelength dimensions. However, the spectral response of nanocavities is usually controlled by the spatial separation between the two reflecting mirrors and the spacer's refractive index. Here, we demonstrate static and dynamic control of Fabry-Pérot nanocavities by inserting a plasmonic metasurface, as a passive element, and a gallium doped-zinc oxide (Ga:ZnO) layer as a dynamically tunable component within the nanocavities' spacer.

Nanophotonics and metamaterials have revolutionized the way we think about optical space (ɛ,μ), enabling us to engineer the refractive index almost at will, to confine light to the smallest of the volumes, and to manipulate optical signals with extremely small footprints and energy requirements. Significant efforts are now devoted to finding suitable materials and strategies for the dynamic control of the optical properties. Transparent conductive oxides exhibit large ultrafast nonlinearities under both interband and intraband excitations.
