This report details a case of acute idiopathic velopharyngeal insufficiency in a previously healthy eight-year-old girl, presenting with sudden voice alteration and nasal regurgitation following mild respiratory symptoms. Physical examination identified unilateral velar paralysis with open rhinolalia, without additional neurological deficits. Extensive diagnostic evaluation, including nasopharyngoscopy, cerebral and cervical imaging, and infectious serologies, yielded unremarkable findings.

Effect of double-premilking teat disinfection protocols on bacterial counts on teat skin of cows and milker gloves in a free-stall-housed dairy herd.

This research communication addresses the hypothesis that double premilking teat disinfection (DD) is more effective in reducing soiling and bacterial count on the cows' teat skin and milkers' gloves than conventional disinfection (CONV). The design was a 3 × 3 Latin square (three groups of cows and three treatments) with conventional teat disinfection (CONV, lactic acid application after forestripping), double teat disinfection using the same disinfectant (DD1D, lactic acid application before and after forestripping), and double teat disinfection using two different disinfectants (DD2D, application of lactic acid before and chlorine-based disinfectant after forestripping). All groups were assigned for six days for each treatment, and the evaluations and samples were collected on the last day, before and after treatment.

Brazil is strategic in controlling neglected zoonoses, such as glanders, in its territory. Among the Brazilian states, Piauí is a strategic state for the spread of the disease in the country. The present study aimed to evaluate the spatial and temporal distribution of official cases of glanders in Piauí between 2015 and 2022.

In this context, this study evaluated fish oil supplements by comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC×GC-MS) to obtain fingerprints, which were used to build predictive models for automated authentication of the most popular products sold in Brazil. The authentication process relied on a one-class classifier model using data-driven soft independent modeling of class analogy (DD-SIMCA).

Introduction: Cisplatin-based chemotherapy is the standard cancer therapy; however, this treatment causes depletion of ovarian follicles in women of reproductive age. Adjuvant treatment with melatonin can protect the ovaries from oxidative stress, reducing the side effects of chemotherapy. The objective was to evaluate the effects of the use of melatonin on the ovarian follicles of mice treated with cisplatin.

β-Glucosidases are enzymes present in all living organisms, playing a pivotal role in diverse biological processes. These enzymes cleave β-glycosidic bonds between carbohydrates, or between a carbohydrate and a non-carbohydrate moiety, which may result in the liberation of volatile aglycones. Released compounds execute diverse physiological roles while the industry takes advantage of exogenously added β-glucosidases for aroma enrichment during food and beverage production.

Identification and Characterization of Multidrug-Resistant Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase-Producing Bacteria from Healthy and Diseased Dogs and Cats Admitted to a Veterinary Hospital in Brazil.

The objective of this study was to identify the main extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria and to detect the frequency of the major genes responsible to trigger this resistance in hospitalized animals. We collected 106 rectal swabs from cats ( = 25) and dogs ( = 81) to detect ESBL-producing isolates. ESBL-positive samples were submitted to the antimicrobial susceptibility test, and polymerase chain reaction was performed to detect TEM, SHV, and CTX-M genes from different groups.

Enterotoxigenic potential of Staphylococcus spp. isolates recovered from raw milk and artisanal cheese.

In this work, we investigated the phenotypic profile of Staphylococcus spp. isolates recovered from raw milk and artisanal cheese, and their enterotoxigenic potential through the detection of classical enterotoxin genes (sea, seb, sec, sed and see). A total of 104 isolates (58 coagulase-positive Staphylococcus - CoPS; and 46 coagulase-negative Staphylococcus- CoNS) were used, of which 33 were retrieved from raw milk and 71 from artisanal cheese produced in the Serrana region of Santa Catarina.

Integrated terrestrial-freshwater planning doubles conservation of tropical aquatic species.

Conservation initiatives overwhelmingly focus on terrestrial biodiversity, and little is known about the freshwater cobenefits of terrestrial conservation actions. We sampled more than 1500 terrestrial and freshwater species in the Amazon and simulated conservation for species from both realms. Prioritizations based on terrestrial species yielded on average just 22% of the freshwater benefits achieved through freshwater-focused conservation.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a mood psychiatric disorder described by changes between depressive, hypomanic, or manic episodes. The aimed of the present study was evaluated possible changes in the AA pathway in BD through a systematic review of observational studies. A search in the electronic databases was proceeded, on Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Google Scholar and the British Library for studies published until August 2020.

Use of nursing technologies for safe perioperative pediatric care.

Method: A qualitative study using the theoretical framework of Nietsche Specific Nursing Technology, with a total of 18 perioperative nursing professionals from a general hospital in southern Brazil. Data collection occurred from June to August 2018, from a semi-structured interview and photograph production.

Increased inflammatory biomarkers and changes in biological rhythms in bipolar disorder: A case-control study.

Background: Bipolar Disorder (BD) is a chronic psychiatric disorder characterized by mood disturbances that include depressive, manic, and hypomanic episodes. Despite the severity of the symptoms, there is still a gap in the literature on the precise neurobiology and treatment of BD. The investigations of inflammatory changes in BD has increased in the last decade, evincing the importance of its role in the pathophysiology of the disorder.
