Following the increased mass mortality of populations in the Mediterranean, reliable protocols for the transport, maintenance, and controlled reproduction of this highly endangered species were drawn up within the European Life Pinna project. To test these protocols, the large Pinnidae , which shares similar habits to , has been used. In December 2022, a transport trial of nine specimens of from Trieste (NE Italy) to Camogli (NW Italy) was carried out.

Mortality Rate in Breast Implant Surgery: Is an Additional Procedure Worthwhile to Mitigate BIA-ALCL Risk?

Background: Because of poor knowledge of risks and benefits, prophylactic explantation of high BIA-ALCL risk breast implant (BI) is not indicated. Several surgical risks have been associated with BI surgery, with mortality being the most frightening. Primary aim of this study is to assess mortality rate in patients undergoing breast implant surgery for aesthetic or reconstructive indication.

Introduction: Currently, the mostly used classifications of androgenetic alopecia (AGA) only provide a macroscopic and subjective description of this disorder, without evaluating trichoscopic features.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to elaborate a graded live visual AGA severity scale including macroscopic and microscopic (trichoscopic) pictures, and to determine the most frequent trichoscopic characteristics associated to each grade.

Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted on 122 patients (50 females and 72 males) affected by AGA.

Leukocytoclastic vasculitis (LCV) is a common form of small-vessel vasculitis, which commonly presents as palpable purpura or petechiae, caused by deposition of circulating immune complexes on vessels walls that attracts granulocytes which damage the vascular endothelium and leading to erythrocytes extravasation. The skin is the most commonly involved organ, but also renal, gastrointestinal, pulmonary, cardiovascular and neurological systems may be affected. Skin lesions may be the initial signs of systemic vasculitis.

Effect of national and local lockdowns on the control of COVID-19 pandemic: a rapid review.

Objectives: to describe and compare the effectiveness of national and local lockdowns in controlling the spread of COVID-19.

Methods: a rapid review of published and grey literature on COVID-19 pandemic was conducted following predefined eligibility criteria by searching electronic databases, repositories of pre-print articles, websites and databases of international health, and research related institutions and organisations.

Results: of 584 initially identified records up to 5 July 2020, 19 articles met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review.

How health systems approached respiratory viral pandemics over time: a systematic review.

Background: Several healthcare systems facing respiratory viral infections outbreaks, like COVID-19, have not been prepared to manage them. Public health mitigation solutions ranging from isolation of infected or suspected cases to implementation of national lockdowns have proven their effectiveness for the outbreak's control. However, the adjustment of public health measures is crucial during transition phases to avoid new outbreaks.

Background And Objectives: A summary indicator for evaluating the breast cancer network has never been measured at the regional level. The aim is to design treemaps providing a summary description of hospitals (including breast units) and Local Health Units (LHUs) in terms of their levels of performance within the breast cancer network of the Lazio region (central Italy). The treemap structure has an intuitive design and displays information from both general and specific analyses.

Topical imiquimod-induced linear IgA bullous dermatosis.

A 68-year-old woman was referred to the unit of dermatology for a large basal cell carcinoma on the chin. She was treated with imiquimod cream 5%, and 4 weeks after she developed isolated and grouped tense serum-filled vesicles and bullae on lips, nose, scalp, ankles and lumbar area, and then expanded to the whole body. Histological examination was consistent with a subepidermal bullous dermatosis.

The global dissemination of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) is of great concern for public health. These bacteria have the potential for rapid dissemination in healthcare settings and cause infections associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. A total of 221 carbapenem non-susceptible Enterobacteriaceae isolates were collected from patients admitted to an Italian general hospital from January 2016 to March 2017.

Presepsin, the circulating soluble form of CD14 subtype, increases in response to bacterial infections, and is considered a new, emerging, early marker for sepsis.

Procalcitonin (PCT) can discriminate bacterial from viral systemic infections and true bacteremia from contaminated blood cultures. A total of 1,949 samples from patients with suspected bloodstream infections were included in the study.

Background: Procalcitonin (PCT) levels can be used to predict bacteremia and DNAemia in patients with sepsis. In this study, the diagnostic accuracy of PCT in predicting blood culture (BC) results and DNAemia, as detected by real-time PCR (RT-PCR), was compared with that of other markers of inflammation commonly evaluated in patients with suspected sepsis, such as C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and white blood cell (WBC) count.

Simulations of dredged sediment spreading on a Posidonia oceanica meadow off the Ligurian coast, Northwestern Mediterranean.

The sandy deposits from dredging can have negative effects on the environment such as increase in suspended solids in the water column and their consequent transport. An experimental study was conducted to characterize water masses, dynamics, and sedimentation rates on the Ligurian continental shelf (Italy), where both a sand deposit, that could be used for beach nourishment, and a nearby Posidonia oceanica meadow coexist. The environmental plan provides a mathematical simulation of the sediment-dispersion to evaluate the possible impact on the meadow.

Assessment of vulnerability measures and their effect on survival in a real-life population of multiple myeloma patients registered at Marche Region Multiple Myeloma Registry.

Unlabelled: Multiple myeloma (MM) therapy should be tailored according to patient characteristics although we do not know which ones to use. By studying the characteristics of 266 real-life patients, we found performance status (PS) and Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) as factors affecting survival of MM patients regardless of their disease characteristics. This study might help to select patients for tailoring therapy in clinical practice.
