The physiological importance of the insulin responsive glucose transporter GLUT4 in adipocytes and muscle in maintaining glucose homeostasis is well established. A key protein associated with this process is the aminopeptidase IRAP which co-localizes with GLUT4 in specialized vesicles, where it plays a tethering role. In this study, we investigated the distribution of both GLUT4 and IRAP in the kidney to gain insights into the potential roles of these proteins in this organ.

In National Toxicology Program 2-year studies, hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] administered in drinking water was clearly carcinogenic in male and female rats and mice, resulting in small intestine epithelial neoplasms in mice at a dose equivalent to or within an order of magnitude of human doses that could result from consumption of chromium-contaminated drinking water, assuming that dose scales by body weight(3/4) (body weight raised to the 3/4 power). In contrast, exposure to trivalent chromium [Cr(III)] at much higher concentrations may have been carcinogenic in male rats but was not carcinogenic in mice or female rats. As part of these studies, total chromium was measured in tissues and excreta of additional groups of male rats and female mice.

Background: Hypotension is the most common serious side effect of spinal anesthesia for cesarean delivery. There has been a move recently toward the use of phenylephrine as a vasopressor infusion to improve maternal cardiovascular stability and fetal outcome. Although it seems safe in the elective setting, there have been concerns about its propensity for causing an increase in afterload and a baroreceptor-mediated bradycardia in the mother, with a consequent reduction in maternal cardiac output (CO).

We present a rare case of extramedullary plasmacytoma of the palatine tonsil with cervical lymph node involvement treated by surgical resection. A 58-year-old Caucasian male presented with a solitary 3 cm x 3 cm jugulodigastric lymph node and was found to have an ipsilateral tonsillar swelling. The involved tonsil and lymph node were surgically resected after two inconclusive fine-needle aspirates, and plasmacytoma was confirmed histologically and by immunocytochemistry.

Background: The distribution of residual effects in linear mixed models in animal breeding applications is typically assumed normal, which makes inferences vulnerable to outlier observations. In order to mute the impact of outliers, one option is to fit models with residuals having a heavy-tailed distribution. Here, a Student's-t model was considered for the distribution of the residuals with the degrees of freedom treated as unknown.

Background: Information for mapping of quantitative trait loci (QTL) comes from two sources: linkage disequilibrium (non-random association of allele states) and cosegregation (non-random association of allele origin). Information from LD can be captured by modeling conditional means and variances at the QTL given marker information. Similarly, information from cosegregation can be captured by modeling conditional covariances.

Introduction And Hypothesis: The aim of this study was to validate a technique to measure the vaginal wall thickness (VWT) using two-dimensional ultrasound.

Methods: Women were scanned by two independent operators and by the same operator at two separate visits at the level of the bladder neck, the apex of the bladder, the anterior fornix, the anorectal junction, rectum and posterior fornix. Fresh female cadavers were scanned and ultrasound thickness of the vagina was compared to histological thickness.

OBJECTIVES To validate transperineal, transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound (US) techniques to measure bladder wall thickness (BWT). SUBJECTS AND METHODS Women underwent US measurement of BWT at three different anatomical sites: anterior wall, dome and trigone of the bladder by two 'blinded' operators using transabdominal, transperineal and transvaginal approaches at separate visits and by a single operator using transabdominal and transperineal techniques. Bland-Altman analysis was used to determine interobserver reliability for all three techniques and intraobserver reliability for transabdominal and transperineal methods.

Information from cosegregation of marker and QTL alleles, in addition to linkage disequilibrium (LD), can improve genomic selection. Variance components linear models have been proposed for this purpose, but accommodating dominance and epistasis is not straightforward with them. A full-Bayesian analysis of a mixture genetic model is favorable in this respect, but is computationally infeasible for whole-genome analyses.

Introduction And Hypothesis: The aim of the study was to assess the sensory and motor effects of antimuscarinic treatment on the bladder in women with overactive bladder, detrusor overactivity demonstrated on urodynamics and a mean bladder wall thickness (BWT) greater than 5 mm.

Methods: Fifty-eight women underwent treatment with antimuscarinics in 12 weeks. Before treatment and at 1, 2, 6 and 12 weeks of treatment, women completed the patient perception of bladder condition (PPBC) single-item global questionnaire, indicated the severity of their urgency on a visual analogue scale (VAS) and underwent transvaginal ultrasound to determine mean bladder wall thickness (BWT).

Two pigs were identified having "extra feet" (preaxial polydactyly) within a purebred population of Yorkshire pigs. Polydactyly is an inherited disorder in many species that may be controlled by either recessive or dominant genes. Experimental matings were conducted using pigs that had produced affected offspring with the result of 12 polydactyl offspring out of 95 piglets.

Metastatic disease is responsible for the majority of human cancer deaths. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of metastasis is a major step in designing effective cancer therapeutics. Here we show that the T-box transcription factor Brachyury induces in tumor cells epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), an important step in the progression of primary tumors toward metastasis.

The importance of early identification and management of the high-risk obstetric patient is emphasised in the Confidential Enquiry into Maternal and Child Health (CEMACH) report. High-risk patients who need anaesthetic input include those with airway problems, cardiorespiratory disease and rare genetic conditions, such as malignant hyperthermia and suxamethonium apnoea. Anaesthetic options for labour analgesia as well as anaesthesia for operative delivery will need to be discussed in detail with the patient if a delivery management plan is to be constructed.

Background: Genomic prediction of breeding values involves a so-called training analysis that predicts the influence of small genomic regions by regression of observed information on marker genotypes for a given population of individuals. Available observations may take the form of individual phenotypes, repeated observations, records on close family members such as progeny, estimated breeding values (EBV) or their deregressed counterparts from genetic evaluations. The literature indicates that researchers are inconsistent in their approach to using EBV or deregressed data, and as to using the appropriate methods for weighting some data sources to account for heterogeneous variance.

Background: Marginal posterior genotype probabilities need to be computed for genetic analyses such as geneticcounseling in humans and selective breeding in animal and plant species.

Methods: In this paper, we describe a peeling based, deterministic, exact algorithm to compute efficiently genotype probabilities for every member of a pedigree with loops without recourse to junction-tree methods from graph theory. The efficiency in computing the likelihood by peeling comes from storing intermediate results in multidimensional tables called cutsets.

There is a need for safe, effective, and easy-to-administer systemic analgesia that ideally has rapid onset and offset, matches the time course of uterine contractions, and does not compromise the fetus. Although neuraxial blockade is the "gold standard" for labor analgesia, systemic analgesia is useful in those cases in which neuraxial analgesia is contraindicated, refused or simply not needed by the parturient, or when skilled anesthesia providers are not available. Because of its unique pharmacologic properties, remifentanil has been investigated, and is used clinically, to provide IV labor analgesia.

Genomic prediction involves characterization of chromosome fragments in a training population to predict merit. Confidence in the predictions relies on their evaluation in a validation population. Many commercial animals are multibreed (MB) or crossbred, but seedstock populations tend to be purebred (PB).
