Introduction: Sustaining attention is a notoriously difficult task as shown in a recent experiment where reaction times (RTs) and pupillometry data were recorded from 350 subjects in a 30-min vigilance task. Subjects were also presented with different types of goal, feedback, and reward.

Methods: In this study, we revisit this experimental data and solve three families of machine learning problems: (i) RT-regression problems, to predict subjects' RTs using all available data, (ii) RT-classification problems, to classify responses more broadly as attentive, semi-attentive, and inattentive, and (iii) to predict the subjects' experimental conditions from physiological data.

Article Synopsis
  • Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) are a significant health issue for cancer patients, with this study exploring their prevalence and the types of resistance genes present.
  • Among 165 bacterial isolates from cancer patients, 57% were Enterobacteriaceae, and 46.8% of these were found to be carbapenem-resistant, with Klebsiella pneumoniae being the most common strain.
  • The majority of the CRE strains produced carbapenemase, with the blaNDM gene being the most frequently detected, marking the first identification of blaVIM in Enterobacteriaceae in Sri Lanka.

Article Synopsis
  • Usher syndrome (USH) is a genetic disorder that causes hearing loss, vision loss due to retinitis pigmentosa, and balance issues, classified into three types without early detection biomarkers.
  • The study investigated the differences in microRNA (miRNA) expression in cell lines from USH patients versus healthy controls, using Epstein-Barr virus to transform lymphocytes for analysis.
  • Findings showed 92 miRNAs were differentially expressed in USH, with specific patterns tied to each type, and three crucial miRNAs associated with sensory development were notably downregulated, offering potential insights for identifying USH.

Background: Extended oral prophylactic antibiotics have been increasingly used in arthroplasty with the goal of reducing the risk of prosthetic joint infection (PJI). While a reduction in the rate of PJI has been noted with extended oral antibiotic regimens in high-risk patients, no large database study has assessed infection risk after primary total hip arthroplasty among well-balanced cohorts receiving and not receiving postoperative extended oral antibiotics.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using a national database, TriNetX, to identify patients who underwent primary total hip arthroplasty.

Background: Some studies have suggested the risk of wound complications may be higher using the direct anterior (DA) approach to total hip arthroplasty (THA). This study aimed to compare the risk of early postoperative wound complications between the DA and direct lateral (DL) approaches to THA and to determine patient risk factors that may contribute to this problem.

Methods: All patients who underwent primary THA with a single surgeon over a 5-year period were retrospectively reviewed.

Circulating miRNA has recently emerged as important biomolecules with potential clinical values as diagnostic markers for several diseases. However, to be used as such, it is critical to accurately quantify miRNAs in the clinic. Yet, preanalytical factors that can affect an error-free quantification of these miRNAs have not been explored.

Cytokine expression during T cell differentiation is a highly regulated process that involves long-range promoter-enhancer and CTCF-CTCF contacts at cytokine loci. Here, we investigated the impact of dynamic chromatin loop formation within the topologically associating domain (TAD) in regulating the expression of interferon gamma (IFN-γ) and interleukin-22 (IL-22); these cytokine loci are closely located in the genome and are associated with complex enhancer landscapes, which are selectively active in type 1 and type 3 lymphocytes. In situ Hi-C analyses revealed inducible TADs that insulated Ifng and Il22 enhancers during Th1 cell differentiation.
