Treatment approaches to horses with acute diarrhea admitted to referral institutions: A multicenter retrospective study.

Background: This study aimed to describe and compare therapeutic approaches for horses with acute diarrhea in different geographic regions worldwide.

Methods: Clinical information was retrospectively collected from diarrheic horses presented to participating institutions between 2016 and 2020, including fluid therapy on admission, antimicrobial drugs, probiotics, anti-endotoxic medications, anti-inflammatory drugs, gastroprotectants, digital cryotherapy, and toxin-binding agents. Seasonal and geographic differences were investigated.

AZGP1 deficiency promotes angiogenesis in prostate cancer.

Background: Loss of AZGP1 expression is a biomarker associated with progression to castration resistance, development of metastasis, and poor disease-specific survival in prostate cancer. XP-endo Finisher effectively reduces hard-tissue debris accumulated in root canals with isthmus after preparation with a reciprocating file system.

This study compared the accumulated hard-tissue debris (AHTD) after preparation with WaveOne Gold (WOG) to XP-endo Shaper (XPS), without and with a supplementary step using XP-endo Finisher (XPF) using clinically applicable irrigation. Twenty-four mesial roots with two canals and single foramen were micro-CT-scanned and matched. Scans were also taken after preparation with WOG or XPS, and after XPF.

Comparative Characterization of Mitogenomes From Five Orders of Cestodes (Eucestoda: Tapeworms).

The recognized potential of using mitogenomics in phylogenetics and the more accessible use of high-throughput sequencing (HTS) offer an opportunity to investigate groups of neglected organisms. Here, we leveraged HTS to execute the most comprehensive documentation of mitogenomes for cestodes based on the number of terminals sequenced. We adopted modern approaches to obtain the complete mitogenome sequences of 86 specimens representing five orders of cestodes (three reported for the first time: Phyllobothriidea, "Tetraphyllidea" and Trypanorhyncha).

Micro-Computed Tomographic Analysis of the Shaping Ability of XP-Endo Shaper in Oval-Shaped Distal Root Canals of Mandibular Molars.

Objective: To compare the shaping ability of the XP-endo Shaper (XPS) system to the ProTaper Next (PTN) system in oval-shaped distal root canals.

Methods: From 12 mandibular molars, distal roots with moderately curved single oval canals were randomly assorted to be instrumented with XPS (experimental group) or PTN (control group) and then scanned using micro-computed tomography [Scan 1]. The root canals of the XPS samples were prepared following the manufacturer's instructions using 15 insertions (XPS15) and rescanned [Scan 2].

Biological variation estimates of thyroid related measurands - meta-analysis of BIVAC compliant studies.

Objectives: Testing for thyroid disease constitutes a high proportion of the workloads of clinical laboratories worldwide. The setting of analytical performance specifications (APS) for testing methods and aiding clinical interpretation of test results requires biological variation (BV) data. A critical review of published BV studies of thyroid disease related measurands has therefore been undertaken and meta-analysis applied to deliver robust BV estimates.

The shaping ability of WaveOne Gold, TRUShape and XP-endo Shaper systems in oval-shaped distal canals of mandibular molars: A microcomputed tomographic analysis.

Aim: To compare the shaping ability of a heat-treated centric reciprocating file system (WaveOne Gold), a heat-treated eccentric rotary multifile system (TRUShape 3D Conforming Files), and a heat-treated expandable one-file rotary system (XP-endo Shaper) extending its activation time, in preparing oval-shaped root canals in extracted mandibular molars by means of microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) analysis.

Methodology: Thirty moderately curved oval-shaped distal roots of mandibular molars were selected. The normality of canal length, curvature angle, volume, surface area, structure model index, and aspect ratio were confirmed.

Biological Variation of Cardiac Troponins in Health and Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Background: Many studies have assessed the biological variation (BV) of cardiac-specific troponins (cTn), reporting widely varying within-subject BV (CVI) estimates. The aim of this study was to provide meta-analysis-derived BV estimates for troponin I (cTnI) and troponin T (cTnT) for different sampling intervals and states of health.

Methods: Relevant studies were identified by a systematic literature search.

Spanish society of laboratory medicine external quality assurance programmes: evolution of the analytical performance of clinical laboratories over 30 years and comparison with other programmes.

The purpose of this study is to understand the evolution of the analytical performance of the laboratories participating in the Spanish society of laboratory medicine (SEQC) external quality assurance (EQA) programmes during its 30 years of operation and to compare it with the performance of other EQA programmes to establish whether the results are similar. The results obtained during this period are evaluated by applying the biological variability (BV) and state of the art-derived quality specifications. In addition, the results are compared with those obtained by other EQA programme organisations.

Impact of implementing a category 1 external quality assurance scheme for monitoring harmonization of clinical laboratories in Spain.

Background: The objective of the present study was to examine the evolution of the analytical performance specifications (APS) used in External Quality Assurance (EQA) schemes, as well as the efficacy of a category 1 EQA scheme in monitoring the harmonization of clinical laboratory results in Spain.

Methods: A review of the literature on the types of quality specifications used in schemes in other countries and their evolution was performed. In addition, a comparative analysis of the potential impact that different APS from eight countries had on clinical decision-making was made based on three measurands: sodium, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT).

Randomized clinical trial of five adhesive systems in occlusal restorations: One-year results.

This randomized clinical trial evaluated the efficacy of five different adhesive systems in the restoration of occlusal cavities after one year of function. Two etch-and-rinse (Optibond™FL, Prime&BondNT™) and three self-etch (Clearfil™SE Bond, XenoIII, XenoV) adhesive systems were evaluated on 159 occlusal restorations, incrementally filled with a microhybrid composite resin. Restorations were assessed using the FDI criteria at baseline, 6 months and 1 year.

The threat of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in South America has global economic implications and retaining a FMD Free status under the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) remains a top priority. In Argentina the Servicio Nacional de Sanidad y Calidad Agroalimentaria (SENASA), the national service of agri-food health and quality, requires cattle located in the Pampean region of the Salado River basin to receive two foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccinations per year, which results in one vaccination coinciding with beef cattle breeding season. While the vaccination program remains necessary, there is a growing concern amongst food animal veterinarians, that the overlap of FMD vaccination with the first 35 days of the breeding season is associated with early pregnancy loss (EPL).

Thermal sensitivity of innate immune response in three species of Rhinella toads.

Immune activity is temperature-dependent and strongly related to thermal biology in ectotherms. Eurythermic, vs stenothermic, species commonly show a broader range of immune responses. Furthermore, the development of behavioral fever in ectotherms is correlated with improved immune function.

Canal transportation and centering ratio after preparation in severely curved canals: analysis by micro-computed tomography and double-digital radiography.

Objectives: This study compared canal transportation and centering ratio produced after instrumentation with a single heat-treated reciprocating system, WaveOne Gold (WOG; Dentsply Sirona, Tulsa, OK, USA) and a single heat-treated rotary instrument, XP-endo Shaper (XPS; FKG, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland), using micro-computed tomographic (micro-CT) imaging, and evaluated the ability of double-digital radiography (DDR) to detect canal transportation.

Materials And Methods: Mesial root canals of mandibular molars with severe curvature (25-70°) were randomly assigned to either WOG or XPS groups for preparation. Centering ratio was measured by micro-CT imaging, while canal transportation was measured by micro-CT and DDR methods at 3, 5, and 7 mm from the apex.

Standardization in laboratory medicine: Two years' experience from category 1 EQA programs in Spain.

Introduction: Standardization is the ability to obtain interchangeable results leading to same medical interpretation. External quality assessment (EQA) is the main support of the on-going harmonization initiatives. Materials And Methods: After coronal access and instrumentation, 120 maxillary incisors were divided into four groups (n = 30). Two experimental groups according to the restorative material applied to the inner walls of the access cavity: OB, OptiBond All-In-One + minocycline intracanal paste; U200, RelyX U200 + minocycline intracanal paste.
