Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the impact of smoking on the health profile and surgical outcomes of patients with primary aldosteronism (PA).
  • In a retrospective analysis of 881 PA patients from 36 Spanish hospitals, smokers exhibited higher rates of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and larger adrenal tumors compared to non-smokers, although their blood pressure and potassium levels were similar at diagnosis.
  • The results indicated that while smoking is linked to a greater prevalence of LVH and mild autonomous cortisol secretion (MACS), it does not significantly influence hypertension cure rates after surgery for PA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how the COVID-19 pandemic affected blood pressure control in patients with hypertension using ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM).
  • Data were compared between two groups: patients measured before the pandemic and those measured during it, with a total of 704 pandemic patients and 916 prepandemic patients included in the analysis.
  • Results showed that during the pandemic, patients had higher blood pressure readings and a greater prevalence of uncontrolled hypertension, highlighting the need for strategies to manage blood pressure during such crises.

Aim: To evaluate the impact of aldosterone excess on renal function in individuals with primary aldosteronism and to compare its evolution after surgery or mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist (MRA) treatment.

Methods: A multicentre, retrospective cohort study of primary aldosteronism patients in follow-up in 36 Spanish tertiary hospitals, who underwent specific treatment for primary aldosteronism (MRA or adrenalectomy).

Results: A total of 789 patients with primary aldosteronism were included, with a median age of 57.

Objective Real-life management of patients with hypertension and chronic kidney disease (CKD) among European Society of Hypertension Excellence Centres (ESH-ECs) is unclear : we aimed to investigate it. Methods A survey was conducted in 2023. The questionnaire contained 64 questions asking ESH-ECs representatives to estimate how patients with CKD are managed.

Article Synopsis
  • - A 2023 survey by the European Society of Hypertension assessed the management of chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients with hypertension across 88 centers in 27 countries, finding that only 28% had preexisting CKD, and 30% exhibited resistant hypertension.
  • - The survey indicated inconsistent rates of recent kidney function tests and varying usage of important medications, showing higher rates of certain drugs when nephrologists were involved in the care team.
  • - Overall, the study highlighted significant gaps in CKD screening and treatment prior to referral for specialized care, suggesting that tailored initiatives could enhance management for patients with hypertension and CKD.

Introduction: Primary aldosteronism (PA) is associated with several cardiometabolic comorbidities. Specific treatment by mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRA) or adrenalectomy has been reported to reduce the cardiometabolic risk. However, the cardiovascular benefit could depend on plasma renin levels in patients on MRA.

Dyslipidemia is a frequent side effect associated with nilotinib treatment. Patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) under treatment with nilotinib who develop dyslipidemia have been shown to have a higher risk of presenting atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ACVD). Therapeutic discontinuation in selected individuals could be a strategy in order to prevent the development of ACVD.

Objective: To test the efficacy of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) for lifestyle modification in patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS).

Design: 76 MetS patients completed this clinical trial, with 18 months follow-up. 45 participants from the experimental group (EG - CBT) and 31 to the control group (CG - usual care).

Treatment of chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) is based on tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI), whose introduction in 2001 improved the survival rate after 5 years from 40 to 90%. The longevity increase has been accompanied by a higher incidence of cardiovascular events (CVE) that can be explained due to the sum of cardiovascular risk factors (CVRF) together with the secondary effects of the TKI. The effect of the TKI over the blood pressure control is still unknown.

Renal infarction is a rare disease whose incidence is less than 1%. The symptoms can be abdominal or flank pain, nausea, vomiting, fever or hypertension. The diagnosis is complex, and it is based on symptoms, blood analysis with an elevated level of lactate dehydrogenase and computed tomography angiography.

Introduction And Objectives: Renal denervation is a percutaneous intervention for the treatment of resistant hypertension. Randomized studies have shown contradictory results on its efficacy. We present the results of a renal denervation registry for the treatment of resistant hypertension in real-life patients in Spain.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) syndrome is a prevalent condition characterized by repeated episodes of obstruction of the upper airway, leading to intermittent hypoxemia and important endothelial and anatomical dysfunctions that cause cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. The finding of the relationship between OSA and hypertension, especially resistant hypertension (RHT), has increased the interest in therapeutic strategies that affect renal sympathetic activity in these patients. The observational studies published until now demonstrated that renal denervation therapy can reduce the severity of OSA syndrome.

The incidence of hypertension is high in the elderly and is present in 2/3 of the patients older than 65 years. Prevalence can reach 90% in patients older than 80 years. The presence of isolated systolic hypertension (ISH) is characteristic of this population.

Background And Objective: Arterial stiffness is one of the early lesions of the arteries in patients with cardiovascular risk factors. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is one form of measurement of arterial stiffness. The renin-angiotensin system seems to be involved in the inflammatory mechanisms that take place at level of the vascular wall.
