Although integrated management and control programs implement intense control measures for adult, pupal, larval, and breeding sites during outbreaks, there is a lack of studies to understand the role of the vector egg stage in disease dynamics. This study aimed to assess the dry season quiescent and egg populations in houses and backyards in Tapachula, southern Mexico. Two hundred and fifty ovitraps were placed in 125 homes in the Las Americas neighborhood.

Surveillance consists of systematic data collection, analysis, and interpretation and is essential for planning and implementing control activities. The lack of success in the control and surveillance of the mosquito elsewhere demands the development of new accessible and effective strategies. This work aimed to develop and evaluate an adhesive lure trap for household indoor surveillance of .

is transmitted by ticks causing Canine monocytic ehrlichiosis, which is considered one of the most critical tickborne pathogens. This study aimed to identify by PCR technique in ticks associated with dogs from urban and rural homes in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. The study was conducted at 13 localities in eight municipalities from 2012 to 2021.

More than 90 species of phlebotomines are vectors of parasites, bacteria, and viruses, which cause disease in animals and humans. Therefore, their study is necessary to establish prevention and control strategies. Mexico is an endemic country for leishmaniasis, mostly in the center and southern regions of the country, yet only few studies have been conducted in the northern part of the country.

Background: Scorpion sting is a neglected public health problem, despite a global estimate of 1.2 million scorpion stings and some 3,250 deaths annually.

Methods: This cross-sectional study estimates the occurrence of scorpion stings and identifies associated factors in seven communities in the highly marginalized municipality of Chilapa, in the Mexican state of Guerrero.

The head louse Pediculus humanus capitis (De Geer) is a hematophagous ectoparasite that inhabits the human scalp. The infestations are asymptomatic; however, skin irritation from scratching occasionally may cause secondary bacterial infections. The present study determined the presence and frequency of the knockdown resistance (kdr) mutation T929I in 245 head lice collected from Mexico, Peru, and Canada.

The primary strategy to avoid adverse impacts from insect-mediated pathogen transmission is the chemical control of vector populations through insecticides; its continued use has led to insecticide resistance and unknown consequences on vector competence. This review aims to systematically analyze and synthesize the research on the influence of insecticide resistance (IR) on vector competence (VC). Thirty studies met the inclusion criteria.

Sterile males of Aedes aegypti were released once a week for 8 weeks to evaluate the dispersal efficiency of ground and aerial drone release methods in a rural village of 26 Ha in southern Mexico. Indoor and outdoor BG-Sentinel traps were placed in 13−16 houses distributed throughout the village. The BG traps were activated 48 h after the release of the sterile males and functioned for a 24 h period following each release.

Dengue and other -borne diseases have dramatically increased over the last decades. The Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) has been successfully used as part of integrated pest strategies to control populations of insect-plant and livestock pests and is currently being tested as a potential method to reduce mosquito populations in an environmentally friendly approach. However, during the mass rearing steps needed to produce millions of mosquitoes, egg storage and preservation are essential for a certain amount of time.

Emerging and re-emerging vector-borne infections are a global public health threat. In endemic regions, fever is the main reason for medical attention, and the etiological agent of such fever is not usually identified. In this study, non-specific febrile pathogens were molecularly characterized in serum samples from 253 patients suspected of arbovirus infection.

Article Synopsis
  • Control programs for dengue prevention need more effective tools to monitor larval habitats, especially due to the new risks posed by COVID-19 for field technicians.
  • Use of drones was explored as a safer option for surveillance in dengue-endemic areas, enabling monitoring with minimal householder contact.
  • The study found that drones were significantly more effective at locating hard-to-reach breeding sites than traditional ground surveillance methods, suggesting drones could enhance vector control efforts.

In Mexico, Aedes podographicus is one of the most common species within the subgenus Protomacleaya of Aedes. This species has been collected in 12 states close to the coastal regions; however, few records confirm the presence of Ae. podographicus inland.

  • Indoor and outdoor ovitraps were set up in 15 houses and surrounding areas in two rural Chiapas villages to monitor egg populations of mosquito species from 2016 to 2018.
  • Hidalgo village had significantly higher egg counts (257,712) than Río Florido (165,623), with outdoor traps yielding more eggs than indoor traps.
  • Seasonal precipitation strongly influenced egg population fluctuations, with more eggs collected during the rainy season, and there was a strong correlation between egg counts in indoor and outdoor traps, suggesting that outdoor sampling can estimate indoor oviposition in future research.

The prevalence of pediculosis in Mexican children was studied in San Nicolas and Tapachula, Mexico. A cross-sectional study included 888 students between six and 12 years old from two urban communities with an unequal socioeconomic status between September 2015 and March 2016. A Pearson χ2 and multivariate logistic analysis were carried out to associate risk factors to pediculosis.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers studied how genes might affect the chances of getting serious dengue fever types in different groups of people.
  • They looked at data from 7,460 people from Latin America, South Asia, and Southeast Asia to see how their genes related to the risk of dengue.
  • The study found that certain genetic factors made people significantly more likely to get the more dangerous types of dengue compared to regular dengue, and this risk was similar across different ancestry groups.

Background: Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus are the main mosquito species responsible for dengue virus (DENV) transmission to humans in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The role of vertical transmission in the epidemiology of dengue and the maintenance of this arbovirus in nature during interepidemic periods remain poorly understood, and DENV vertical transmission could sustain the existence of virus reservoirs within Aedes populations.

Methods: Between April 2011 and October 2012, we monitored vertical transmission of DENV in Ae.

To document the diversity and distribution of mosquitoes inhabiting the Mexican state of Nuevo León, collection trips were conducted to all physiographic regions (Grand Northamerican Plains, Coastal Plain of North Gulf, and Sierra Madre Oriental) and subregions across the state. A total of 3,176 specimens were collected. Additionally, we re-examined mosquito specimens in two Mexican entomological collections: The Collection of Insects and Mites of Medical Importance and the Collection of Arthropods of Medical Importance.

  • Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a mosquito-borne virus that causes Chikungunya fever, first entering Mexico in October 2014, with a significant outbreak occurring in Chiapas in 2015.
  • A study evaluated 22 confirmed CHIKV cases, focusing on genetic variability, viral dispersal patterns, and mutations by sequencing specific genes and using phylogenetic methods.
  • The research revealed multiple CHIKV strains circulating in Chiapas, with notable mutations affecting how the virus interacts with host cells, but no evidence of positive selection was found among the viral sequences.

The sterile insect technique (SIT) may offer a means to control the transmission of mosquito borne diseases. SIT involves the release of male insects that have been sterilized by exposure to ionizing radiation. We determined the effects of different doses of radiation on the survival and reproductive capacity of local strains of Aedes aegypti and Ae.
