[Adverse seizure reactions after electroconvulsive therapy. Study of personal cases and review of the literature].

Objective: To determine what are the risk factors for the occurrence of unwanted seizures after an ECT session, and what is the best attitude regarding future ECT.

Method: We have reviewed all the case reports published in the literature between 1946 and 1995 and have carried out a prospective case-control study of all incidental seizure type side effects among a group of 43 patients treated consecutively using the same procedure within the same institution in 1993.

Results: Results from the literature are presented in tables I to IV and results from our case-control study in tables V to VIII.

Brief report: association of sex chromosome anomalies with childhood-onset psychotic disorders.

Objective: An apparent excess of sex chromosome aneuploidies (XXY, XXX, and possibly XYY) has been reported in patients with adult-onset schizophrenia and with unspecified psychoses. This study describes the results of cytogenetic screening carried out for pediatric patients meeting DMS-III-R criteria for childhood-onset schizophrenia (COS) and a subgroup of patients with childhood-onset psychotic disorder not otherwise specified, provisionally labeled by the authors as multidimensionally impaired (MDI).

Method: From August 1990 to July 1997, karyotypes were determined for 66 neuroleptic-nonresponsive pediatric patients (28 MDI, 38 COS), referred to the National Institute of Mental Health for an inpatient treatment trial of clozapine.

Evolution of cerebral edema and its relationship with power in the theta band.

In previous papers we have proposed that in patients with space-occupying lesions, delta power was related with the volume of the lesion and theta power with the volume of the edema. In this report we analyze the evolution of 10 patients with space-occupying lesions in whom we measured the volume of the lesion and of the edema before and after treatment that produced changes in these volumes. EEGs were recorded in the leads of the 10-20 system referenced to linked earlobes.

A follow-up study of EEG coherences in children with different pedagogical evaluations.

A follow-up study on EEG coherence values was carried out with 46 school-age children divided into three pedagogical groups considering their reading and writing abilities (normal subject and children with mild and with serious reading-writing problems). EEGs were recorded at rest, with eyes closed in 15 referential derivations that gave 105 possible coherence values. Coherence was calculated after the elimination of the average reference.

[Neutralizing capacity of ++antiophidic sera against the venom of Bothrops moojeni (lance-headed viper)].

In the production of current therapeutic antisera used in Argentina for Bothrops snakebite, the Bothrops moojeni venom is not used as immunogen, since this snake is not considered a serious public health problem. Accidents caused by this species have not been reported in this country even though Bothrops moojeni is not unfrequent in some regions of Misiones. Despite the high degree of immunological cross reactivity found among the Crotalinae venoms and, in this particular case, among the venoms from the Bothrops Genus, there exists a significant intraspecific variation in venom composition, particularly in specimens arising from different geographic regions.

EEG delta activity: an indicator of attention to internal processing during performance of mental tasks.

In previous papers we proposed that an increase in delta EEG activity during mental tasks might be related to an increase in subjects' attention to internal processing. In this paper we have made a narrow band analysis to detect those EEG frequencies that change selectively during the performance of a mental task that requires attention to internal processing. Two different experiments were performed: (1) a difficult mental calculation task and a control stimulus with the same physical characteristics as the arithmetical symbols were presented in random order; (2) the Sternberg paradigm for the analysis of short term memory using a memory set of 5 or 3 digits was also presented in random order.

[Immunobiological characterization of murine LB leukemia and the LBC cell line].

LB leukemia is a nonimmunogenic T cell tumor which spontaneously arose in a BALB/c mouse; efforts to induce immunological rejection of the leukemic cells have always failed. The leukemic cells grow rapidly and progressively in the syngeneic host invading spleen, lymph nodes and liver. A cell line (LBC) was developed from the original tumor.

Longitudinal quantitative EEG study of children with different performances on a reading-writing test.

In a previous paper, using the same test for the evaluation of reading-writing abilities, Harmony et al. (1990b) reported that children with severe difficulties had more delta in fronto-temporal regions, and this was interpreted as a sign of underlying cerebral dysfunction. Children with severe and minor difficulties in the test had more diffuse theta absolute and relative powers and less alpha relative power.

Comparison of Z and multivariate statistical brain electromagnetic maps for the localization of brain lesions.

Conventional Z maps provide probability statements about the deviation of observed values from the norm. Galán et al. (1994) introduced Simultaneous Significance Probability Scales to detect abnormalities over the whole map, making use of the information provided by the topographic structure of dependencies.

[Our experience in endoscopic teflon treatment in vesicoureteral reflux in children].

We report our experience with the endoscopic treatment of vesicoureteral reflux by submucosal injection of Teflon (STING) in children. Since December of 1992, 45 children and a total of 67 ureters were treated. The overall success rate was 90% after one injection and 95% after two injections.

Screening for Barrett's esophagus by balloon cytology.

Objective: to determine whether balloon cytology would allow a nonendoscopic diagnosis of Barrett's esophagus.

Methods: In 10 unselected patients with Barrett's esophagus, balloon cytology was performed with a Brandt esophageal cytology balloon catheter prior to endoscopy/esophageal biopsy. Specimens were cytologically evaluated for the presence of goblet cells and/or dysplasia.

Frequency source analysis in patients with brain lesions.

In a previous study (Harmony et al. 1993) we observed that the volume of lesions was correlated only with delta power, while the volume and density of edema showed a significant correlation with theta and alpha power, suggesting two independent origins of activity in the delta and theta bands in patients with space-occupying lesions. Our goal in this paper is to show, through a different technique, in a narrow band spectral analysis, that brain lesions are characterized by activity in the delta domain and that edema is better correlated with activity within the theta range.

Test-retest reliability of the sensory organization test in noninstitutionalized older adults.

The purpose of this study was to determine the 1-week test-retest reliability of the Sensory Organization Test (SOT), using computer-generated scores and loss of balance (LOB) episodes in noninstitutionalized older adults. The SOT was administered to each subject on two separate days 1 week apart in an out-patient clinic. A volunteer sample of 40 individuals who were at least 65 years of age participated in this study.

Efficacy of methadone versus methadone and guanfacine in the detoxification of heroin-addicted patients.

In a randomized double-blind study, the clinical efficacy of methadone vs. methadone and guanfacine was assessed in terms of evolution of opioid withdrawal symptoms during inpatient detoxification. A total of 144 patients were included and randomly allocated to three different treatment groups: methadone alone, and two combined treatment schedules (methadone plus 3 or 4 mg of guanfacine).

Immunoreactive neuronal cell bodies were detected in the cerebral cortex, the claustrum, the endopiriform nucleus, the corpus callosum, the anterior olfactory nuclei, the olfactory tubercle, the nucleus accumbens, the lateral septum, the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, the hippocampal formation, the dentate gyrus, the caudate-putamen, the fundus striatum, the amygdaloid complex, the thalamus, the caudolateral part of the hypothalamus, the supramammillary nuclei, the substantia nigra, the pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus, the ventrotegmental area, the Purkinje cells in the cerebellum, the dorsal cochlear nucleus, the subnucleus oralis and caudalis of trigeminal nerve, and the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. Immunoreactive fibres were found in the medial forebrain bundle, the globus pallidus, the stria terminalis, the pyramidal tract, the spinal tract of trigeminal nerve, and the ventral horn of spinal cord.

Correlation between computed tomography and voltage and current source density spectral EEG parameters in patients with brain lesions.

In a group of patients with space-occupying brain lesions, CT measurements were correlated with absolute power (AP) and relative power (RP) of the delta, theta, alpha and beta EEG bands, calculated from the raw EEG potentials (EEGp) and from the Laplacian estimates also called "current source densities" (CSD). Rank correlations were calculated between the number of abnormal values in each band and the following CT measures: volume of the lesion and of the edema, density of the edema, percentage of ventricular collapse and midline shift. Abnormal spectral values are those which are significantly higher than the norm for the same age, in the delta and theta bands, and significantly lower in the alpha and beta bands.

Mid-life onset of dietary restriction extends life and prolongs cognitive functioning.

Fourteen-month-old C57BL/6 (NIA) mice were placed on a nutritionally complete diet providing 139.4 kcal/week. Over a 2-month period the food ration of experimental mice (AE) was reduced to 85 kcal/week, where it remained for the duration of the study.

Test-retest reliability of EEG spectral parameters during cognitive tasks: II. Coherence.

We analyzed test-retest reliability of EEG coherence during rest and during two cognitive tasks: one verbal, the search for a synonym, and the other consisting of mental mathematical calculations. The experiment was performed twice, with a month's interval between each session. Coherence between all pairwise combinations of the EEG recorded in 15 leads was computed for delta, theta, alpha and beta bands.
