Polioencephalomalacia in adult sheep grazing pastures with prostrate pigweed.

Polioencephalomalacia was diagnosed in 2 animals from different farms. In apparently healthy animals from same farms, fecal thiaminase and a significant reduction in erythrocyte trans-ketolase activity was observed. The presence of thiaminase in Amaranthus blitoides could have contributed to the development of polioencephalomalacia in sheep grazing on natural pastures.

The introduction of chimeric genes encoding the fusion leader of lactococcin A-propediocin PA-1 or procolicin V under the control of the inducible nisA promoter and the lactococcin A-dedicated secretion genes (lcnCD) into Lactococcus lactis strains, including a nisin producer, expressing the two component regulator NisRK led to the production or pediocin PA-1 or colicin V, respectively.

High-level coproduction of the bacteriocins nisin A and lactococcin A by Lactococcus lactis.

In this study, a two-plasmid system for enhanced and consistent biosynthesis of the model lactococcal bacteriocin lactococcin A in non-producing Lactococcus lactis hosts was developed. The system comprised a plasmid carrying the genes lcnA and lciA under the control of the nisin-inducible nisA promoter, and a second plasmid harbouring the lcnC and lcnD genes. Experimental study of LY333328 (oritavancin), alone and in combination, in therapy of cephalosporin-resistant pneumococcal meningitis.

Using a rabbit model of meningitis, we sought to determine the efficacy of LY333328, a semisynthetic glycopeptide, in the treatment of cephalosporin-resistant pneumococcal meningitis. LY333328 was administered at a dose of 10 mg/kg of body weight/day, alone and in combination with ceftriaxone at 100 mg/kg/day with or without dexamethasone at 0.25 mg/kg/day.

Persistence of microscopic human cancers in mice: alterations in the angiogenic balance accompanies loss of tumor dormancy.

Some human tumor lines do not form visible tumors when inoculated into immunosuppressed mice. The fate of these human tumor lines was followed by transfecting them with green fluorescence protein before inoculating them into mice. Although the tumor lines failed to grow progressively, they formed small dormant microscopic foci maintained at constant mass by balanced proliferation and apoptosis.

Risperidone in the treatment of mania: efficacy and safety results from a large, multicentre, open study in Spain.

Background: A number of open studies and preliminary results of unpublished double-blind trials have suggested that the novel antipsychotic risperidone may be effective and well tolerated in the treatment of acute mania in bipolar disorder.
