The present paper describes the synthesis of a new chemically modified cellulose microfiber through oxidation with sodium periodate and functionalization with N,N'-bis (2-aminoethyl)-1,2-ethanediamine for the fast and selective preconcentration of Cd(II) ions in flow system analysis. The new sorbent was characterized by FTIR, SEM, and surface area values. The uptake behavior of Cd(II) ions onto this sorbent was evaluated from kinetic data, pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models, as well as from Langmuir, Freundlich and Langmuir-Freundlich adsorption isotherms.

A Comparative Study of the Outer Membrane Proteome from an Atypical and a Typical Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli.

This study compared the proteomic profile of outer membrane proteins (OMPs) from one strain of atypical enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (aEPEC) and one of typical EPEC (tEPEC). The OMPs fractions were obtained using sarcosine extraction, and analyzed by one- and two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (1DE and 2DE, respectively). The 1DE OMPs analysis of typical and atypical EPEC evidenced similar patterns; however, the 2DE OMP profile from the aEPEC revealed more protein spots in the 40- to 70-kDa region.

Eco-epidemiology of visceral leishmaniasis in the urban area of Paracatu, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil.

The present study was developed in the urban area of Paracatu, an endemic city for the American visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil. A six-month canine survey was performed with 6295 domiciled dogs in 28 districts in that area and showed that 4.2% of those (267 dogs) were positive for VL by ELISA and IFAT serum assays.

Methods And Materials: In this study, we evaluated serum and tissue transforming growth factor β1 (TGFβ1) and aspartate aminotransferase [AST]-to-platelet ratio index (APRI) in patients with BA at the time of diagnosis and at liver transplantation and correlated these data with tissue collagen density, to verify if they could act as biomarkers for BA.

A total of 25 samples from 22 patients were processed by specific PCR/hybridization assays. Parasite DNA was detected in all samples analyzed.
