Article Synopsis
  • Simnotrelvir (S/R) has shown strong antiviral effects against SARS-CoV-2 and, in a recent study, effectively reduced hospitalization rates for COVID-19 in patients during XBB variant surges.
  • The study was conducted in China with 3522 adult participants diagnosed with mild to moderate COVID-19, comparing those treated with S/R to a control group not receiving antivirals.
  • Results indicated that S/R significantly lowered the incidence of COVID-19-related hospitalizations and did not result in any deaths, especially benefiting older patients and those with existing health risks.

Article Synopsis
  • Arbutin, a plant-derived glucoside with antioxidant and tyrosinase-inhibiting properties, is gaining attention in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, but data on its metabolic stability and pharmacokinetics are limited.
  • This study aims to enhance knowledge of arbutin’s metabolic stability and pharmacokinetics through pre-clinical evaluations using advanced techniques like LC-MS/MS for analysis.
  • Results indicate arbutin is stable but has low plasma protein binding, short half-life, and high oral bioavailability, with promising safety profiles suggesting its potential as a therapeutic agent.

Background: Methylmalonic acidemia (MMA) is an autosomal recessive inherited disorder caused by complete or partial deficiency of the enzyme methylmalonyl-CoA mutase (mut0 enzymatic subtype or mut- enzymatic subtype, respectively); a defect in the transport or synthesis of its cofactor, adenosyl-cobalamin (cblA, cblB, or cblD-MMA); or deficiency of the enzyme methylmalonyl-CoA epimerase. The cblA type of MMA is very rare in China. This study aimed to describe the biochemical, clinical, and genetic characteristics of two siblings in a Chinese family, suspected of having the cblA-type of MMA.
