Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are renowned for their potent bacteriostatic activity and safety, rendering them invaluable in animal husbandry, food safety, and medicine. Despite their potential, the physiological toxicity of AMPs to host cells significantly hampers their biosynthetic production. This study presents a novel approach for the biosynthesis of the antimicrobial peptide Kiadin by engineering a DAMP4-DPS-Kiadin fusion protein to mitigate host cell toxicity and achieve high-level expression.

Sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) presents an opportunity to replace elemental sulfur as a "shuttle-free" cathode for secondary Li-S batteries, which can be an ideal choice for stationary energy storage due to its abundance, low cost, and sustainability. The electrolyte options for the state-of-the-art SPAN batteries have been limited to the flammable carbonate and ether ones, which raises safety concerns. Here, we explored the use of a non-flammable acetonitrile (AN) electrolyte for SPAN battery for the first time and identified the irreversible cleavage of C-S bonds of SPAN as the main reason for the failure of SPAN in AN electrolyte.

  • Anode-free lithium-metal batteries (AFBs) have high energy density but face rapid capacity loss due to instability in the solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) when using commercial carbonate electrolytes.
  • The introduction of sacrificial additives, which are low in solubility and can be continuously released, helps form and maintain the SEI during long-term use, minimizing active lithium loss.
  • With these additives, the AFBs achieved impressive capacity retention of 68.9% after 50 cycles, compared to a control cell that failed after 30 cycles, showcasing a promising strategy for improving the practicality of AFBs.

  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most prevalent primary liver cancer, and observational studies indicate that using antithrombotic agents may be linked to a decreased risk of developing HCC, though the exact causal relationship is unclear.
  • To explore this connection, researchers conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis using genetic data from a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to examine the effects of antithrombotic agents on HCC risk.
  • The analysis identified ten genetic variants related to antithrombotic use and found a strong negative causal association, suggesting that using these agents could lower the risk of HCC, with various methods confirming consistent results.

Purpose: The efficacy of systemic therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is limited mainly by the complex tumor defense mechanism and the severe toxic side-effects of drugs. The efficacy of apatinib (Apa), a key liver cancer treatment, is unsatisfactory due to inadequate targeting and is accompanied by notable side-effects. Leveraging nanomaterials to enhance its targeting represents a crucial strategy for improving the effectiveness of liver cancer therapy.

Background: Increasing evidence suggests an association between (HP) infection and Parkinson's disease (PD) and its clinical manifestations, but the causal relationship remain largely unknown.

Objective: To investigate the causal relationship between HP infection and PD risk, PD symptoms, and secondary parkinsonism, we conducted two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR).

Methods: We obtained summary data from genome-wide association studies for seven different antibodies specific to HP proteins and five PD-related phenotypes.

Precisely defining and mapping all cytosine (C) positions and their clusters, known as CpG islands (CGIs), as well as their methylation status, are pivotal for genome-wide epigenetic studies, especially when population-centric reference genomes are ready for timely application. Here, we first align the two high-quality reference genomes, T2T-YAO and T2T-CHM13, from different ethnic backgrounds in a base-by-base fashion and compute their genome-wide density-defined and position-defined CGIs. Second, by mapping some representative genome-wide methylation data from selected organs onto the two genomes, we find that there are about 4.

To obtain enhanced physical and biological properties, various nanoparticles are typically assembled into hybrid nanoparticles through the binding of multiple homologous DNA strands to their complementary counterparts, commonly referred to as homomultivalent assembly. However, the poor binding affinity and limited controllability of homomultivalent disassembly restrict the assembly yield and dynamic functionality of the hybrid nanoparticles. To achieve a higher binding affinity and flexible assembly choice, we utilized the paired heteromultivalency DNA to construct hybrid nanoparticles and demonstrate their excellent assembly characteristics and dynamic applications.

Artificial photosynthesis for hydrogen peroxide (HO) presents a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to generate clean fuel and chemicals. However, the catalytic activity is hindered by challenges such as severe charge recombination, insufficient active sites, and poor selectivity. Here, a robust strategy is proposed to regulate the electronic structure of catalyst by the collaborative effect of defect engineering and dopant.

Developing electrocatalysts based on transition-metal carbides that can be utilized for commercial water splitting is a challenging endeavor. To address this challenge, we employed a novel approach that merged phase-inversion tape-casting and sintering, subsequently implementing a simple and efficient electrodeposition process, to synthesize Ni-activated and Ni-P-activated titanium carbide (Ni/TiC, Ni-P/TiC) ceramic electrodes as water splitting catalytic cathodes and anodes. These self-supported Ni/TiC and Ni-P/TiC electrodes are binder-free with abundant finger-like pores, which contribute to the formation of highly conductive skeleton and more exposed active sites for direct water splitting.
