Liver fibrosis is a complex process driven by various factors and is a key feature of chronic liver diseases. Its essence is liver tissue remodeling caused by excessive accumulation of collagen and other extracellular matrix. Activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), which are responsible for collagen production, plays a crucial role in promoting the progression of liver fibrosis.

Nomogram based on lymphocyte-associated inflammatory indexes predicts portal vein thrombosis after splenectomy with esophagogastric devascularization.

Objective: The relationship between lymphocyte-associated inflammatory indices and portal vein thrombosis (PVT) following splenectomy combined with esophagogastric devascularization (SED) is currently unclear. This study aims to investigate the association between these inflammatory indices and PVT, and to develop a nomogram based on these indices to predict the risk of PVT after SED, providing an early warning tool for clinical practice.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of clinical data from 131 cirrhotic patients who underwent SED at Lanzhou University's Second Hospital between January 2014 and January 2024.

Effects of levels of methionine supplementations in forms of L- or DL-methionine on the performance, intestinal development, immune response, and antioxidant system in broilers challenged with Eimeria spp.

The study was conducted to investigate the effects of 2 isoforms of methionine on growth performance and intestinal health induced by methionine (Met) deficiency and Eimeria infection in broilers. A total of 720 one-day old male chicks (Cobb500) were randomly allocated to 10 groups in a 2 × 5 factorial arrangement (6 reps/group, 12 birds/cage) with diets and Eimeria challenge as the main factors. Hundred percent DL-Met, 100% L-Met, 80% DL-Met, and 80% L-Met diets were formulated to meet approximately 100 or 80% of the total sulfur amino acid (TSAA) requirement with DL-Met or L-Met as Met supplementation sources.

In this Commentary, we would like to comment on the article titled "A rapid advice guideline for the diagnosis and treatment of 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) infected pneumonia (standard version)" as a featured article in Military Medical Research. In the guideline, except for "confirmed cases", "suspected cases", "close contact" and "suspicious exposure" were defined by clinical perspective based on epidemiological risk, clinical symptoms and auxiliary examination. Combined with our experience, we introduced a simple scoring proposal additionally based on not only CT imaging as strongly recommended by the guideline but also blood routine test, especially for primary screening of such patients in the out-patient department.

Effects of alpha-lipoic acid supplementation on growth performance, antioxidant capacity and biochemical parameters for ammonia-exposed broilers.

In order to estimate the effect of alpha-lipoic acid (LA) supplementation on relieving ammonia stress of broilers, 180 22-day-old male broilers were assigned to three groups, six replicates in each group and 10 birds per replicate. The three groups were: (1) a control group without ammonia stress; (2) exposure to 70 ppm atmospheric ammonia (AM); (3) exposure to 70 ppm atmospheric ammonia and administration of 300 mg/kg LA (AM + LA).
