The study aimed to investigate changes in apoptosis in the dilator muscles of the upper airway, particularly looking at Bax and Bcl-2 expression in the tensor veli palatini of patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea-Hypopnea Syndrome (OSAHS).
The findings revealed that Bax levels were significantly higher in OSAHS patients compared to those with chronic tonsillitis, while Bcl-2 levels showed no significant difference.
Additionally, a strong positive correlation was found between the Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) and Bax expression, indicating that increased severity of OSAHS is linked to greater apoptosis in this muscle.
