Background: Persistent inflammation in the airways is a hallmark of asthma, and researchers have extensively explored various inflammatory indicators that contribute to the condition. Despite this, there is limited research on the relationship between the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), a novel marker of inflammation, and overall mortality rates as well as mortality rates due to specific causes in individuals with asthma.

Methods: We analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) covering a 20-year period, from 1999 to 2018.

(AR) is one of the most widely used herbs in Asia and has a wide range of biological activities. These activities are attributed to its various compounds like flavonoids, saponins, and polysaccharides. AR and its major components are often used in combination with other drugs for the treatment of diseases such as cancer and cerebral ischemia.

Wutou decoction is an ancient compound preparation composed of five herbal medicines, which has good therapeutic effects on rheumatoid arthritis. There are two classic preparation methods of Wutou decoction using honey and water as decocting excipients, respectively. However, the differences of chemical compositions between these two Wutou decoctions yet remain unclear.

Background: Access to catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation (AF) may vary due to social deprivation.

Objectives: This study sought to characterize the correlation between our outcomes of interest (rates of AF diagnoses, ablation referrals, and procedures) and the association between social deprivation and our outcomes.

Methods: Rates and correlations of AF diagnoses, ablation referrals, and procedures were reported across 49 census divisions in Ontario, Canada.

Background: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has high incidence and mortality rates. The discovery of an effective biomarker for predicting prognosis and treatment response in patients with NSCLC is of great significance. Bacterial lipopolysaccharide-related genes (LRGs) play a critical role in tumor development and the formation of an immunosuppressive microenvironment; however, their relevance in NSCLC prognosis and immune features is yet to be discovered.

The excellent corrosion resistance of stainless steel primarily relies on the formation of a dense passivation film on its surface. Stress corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement are the primary forms of damage to the stainless steel passivation film, leading to film rupture and subsequent corrosion of the stainless steel substrate. The passivation film exhibits semiconducting properties and typically consists of a bilayer structure with a chromium-rich inner layer and an iron-rich outer layer.

Background And Aim: Only a few studies have investigated the efficacy and safety of different durations of vonoprazan and amoxicillin (VA) high-dose dual therapy for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori. We aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of 10 days versus 14 days of VA high-dose dual therapy for H. pylori eradication.

Article Synopsis
  • A high-throughput point-of-care testing (HT-POCT) system was created to rapidly and accurately detect trace serum iron using a machine learning-assisted platform combined with hydrophobic carbon quantum dots (CQDs).
  • The CQDs, which have a quantum yield of 36.6%, are effective for iron ion detection and demonstrate enhanced fluorescence signals when used with hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (HDESs).
  • The system employs the YOLOv8 algorithm to analyze samples, achieving low limits of detection (33 nM) and consistent results, making it a reliable method for measuring iron concentrations.

Integrated electro-optic (EO) modulators are the core components of the optoelectronic information technology, and lithium niobate is currently the most widely used crystalline thin film material; however, finite EO coefficients limit the modulation efficiency of the modulators. In this Letter, we present an integrated EO modulator using a microring resonator on the lead zirconate titanate (PZT) and silicon nitride (SiN) heterogeneous platform. The microwave attenuation is reduced by using low loss tangent and dielectric constant SiN as the electrode substrate, achieving an EO bandwidth of 33 GHz.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an acquired autoimmune disease diagnosed based on clinical manifestations, muscle fatigue tests, prostigmin tests, serum antibody tests, and neuroelectrophysiological examination. This study conducted a comprehensive search of PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Ovid, Embase, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, WanFang, Chinese Periodical Database, Chinese Bio-Medicine Database, VIP, and DuXiu Database to identify relevant studies on the accuracy of prostigmin tests for diagnosing MG, covering publications from 1941 to 2021. Ten studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the meta-analysis.

Background: Cadmium is a heavy metal that accumulates in the body due to environmental and occupational exposure. The neurotoxicity of cadmium received increasingly attention in recent years. Sleeping is regulated and coordinated by nervous system, however, little is known about the relationship between cadmium and sleep.

Phytochemical investigation on the rhizomes and roots of Gentiana scabra (Gentianaceae) led to the isolation of five new triterpenoids (1-5), together with seven known ones (6-12). The structures and absolute configurations of the new compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic data interpretation, ECD calculation and X-ray crystallographic analysis. Noticeably, compound 4 was an uncommon 3,4-seco-pentacyclic triterpenoid in natural products.

  • Depression is a major global health issue linked to neuronal dysfunction and calcium imbalances, and Jujuboside A (JuA) shows promise as a potential antidepressant due to its anti-anxiety and anti-insomnia effects.
  • In a study with rats subjected to a depression model, JuA improved depressive behaviors, boosted neurotransmitter levels, and enhanced synaptic connections while also affecting immature neurons and calcium homeostasis.
  • The antidepressant effects of JuA were linked to increased expression of key signaling proteins and were significantly reduced when Sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling was inhibited, indicating Shh plays a vital role in JuA's mechanisms.

As unique building blocks for advancing optoelectronics, 2D semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides have garnered significant attention. However, most previously reported MoS photodetectors respond only to visible light with limited absorption, resulting in a narrow spectral response and low sensitivity. Here, a surrounding homojunction MoS photodetector featuring localized p-type nitrogen plasma doping on the surface of n-type MoS while preserving a high-mobility underlying channel for rapid carrier transport is engineered.

  • The study investigates the relationship between telomere length (TL), mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNAcn), and DNA methylation age (DNAmAge) in newborns, and how these markers impact metabolic hormone levels in children at 3 years old.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 895 mother-child pairs in China, using advanced techniques to measure TL, mtDNAcn, DNAmAge, and metabolic hormones like insulin and leptin.
  • Results showed significant associations between DNAmAge and insulin levels, as well as TL and leptin levels, indicating complex, non-linear relationships between these aging biomarkers and metabolic outcomes.

Background: Most medical organizations accept many nursing students each year who gain clinical practice skills under the supervision of clinical nurses. However, there are no assessment tools to measure the contributions nursing students make to the clinical setting during clinical practicum. This study aimed to translate the 'Nursing Student Contributions to Clinical Settings' scale into Chinese and test its reliability and validity from the perspective of Chinese clinical nurses.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the best revascularization method for diabetic patients with multivessel disease who experience a non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI), comparing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and multivessel percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
  • It involves a large cohort of over 11,000 patients and reveals that CABG is linked to lower all-cause mortality than PCI, particularly in patients deemed potentially ineligible for CABG after a surgical consultation.
  • The results suggest that while CABG is generally more beneficial for these patients, the advantage is more pronounced when comparing CABG to a specific group of PCI patients who had a surgical consultation beforehand.
