A trapping-evacuation technique for giant carotid-ophthalmic segment aneurysm clipping in a hybrid operating theater.

It is essential to collapse giant carotid-ophthalmic (OA) segment aneurysms for successful microsurgical clipping. We present a trapping-evacuation technique utilising hybrid operating theater capabilities to soften OA aneurysms. The patients were prepared for both microsurgical and endovascular procedures.

Background: The preservation of the facial nerve (FN) and acoustic function in large vestibular schwannoma (VS) surgery is challenging because of nerve course uncertainties and morphological deviations. Preoperative diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) has been proposed to predict the FN location. This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of this technique for identifying the FN, cochlear nerve (CN) and trigeminal nerve (TN) in large VSs.

China Angioplasty and Stenting for Symptomatic Intracranial Severe Stenosis (CASSISS): A new, prospective, multicenter, randomized controlled trial in China.

Background: Patients with symptomatic stenosis of intradural arteries are at high risk for subsequent stroke. Since the SAMMPRIS trial, stenting is no longer recommended as primary treatment; however, the results of this trial, its inclusion criteria and its center selection received significant criticism and did not appear to reflect our experience regarding natural history nor treatment complications rate. As intracranial atherosclerosis (ICAS) is the most common cause for stroke in Asian countries, we are hereby proposing a refined prospective, randomized, multicenter study in an Asian population with strictly defined patient and participating center inclusion criteria.

Zinc finger protein, X-linked (ZFX) is a transcriptional factor involved in many physiological processes such as embryonic stem cell survival and self-renewal. Though ZFX dysfunctions have been identified in variant human diseases and especially in cancers, its pathological roles have not been fully addressed. Here, we explored the relationship between ZFX expression and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the tongue.

Background: Depressive symptoms in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have attracted much attention in recent years, and negatively affect the health of diabetic patients in numerous ways. This study evaluated the prevalence rate of depressive symptoms in T2DM patients in Shanghai, and the potential factors that may be associated with depressive symptoms in this select population.

Methods: A total of 865 T2DM patients were recruited from Longhua Street, Xuhui, Shanghai by simple random sampling, and all the patients were assessed with the Zung Self-rating Depression Scale to screen for depressive symptoms.

Following Typhoon Haiyan, the World Health Organization (WHO) has been supporting the Government of the Philippines in coordinating the incoming relief supplies from more than 30 international humanitarian health organizations. During the 10 days in Abuyong, Philippines, the Chinese medical rescue team consisting of 50 experts specialized in clinical medicine and disease prevention and control action was taken including, medical treatment, environmental disinfection and health education. A total of 1,831 cases and 2,144 outpatients were treated, blood tests, B-ultrasound, electrocardiogram (ECG) and other laboratory examinations were carried out for more than 615 patients; a cumulative 90,000 square meters in external environment were disinfected, and more than 500 health education materials were handed out.

Although Fasudil has shown therapeutic potential in EAE mice, the mechanism of action are still not fully understood. Here, we examined the immunomodulatory effect of Fasudil on encephalitogenic mononuclear cells (MNCs), and tested the therapeutic potential of Fasudil-treated MNCs in active EAE. Fasudil inhibited expression of CCL20 on T cells and migration of T cells, decreased CD4(+) IFN-γ(+) and CD4(+) IL-17(+) T cells, but increased CD4(+) IL-10(+) and CD4(+) TGF-β(+) T cells.

This study aimed to summarize therapy experience of carotid endarterectomy, carotid endarterectomy combined with Fogarty catheter embolectomy, and hybrid surgery for the treatment of extracranial internal carotid artery occlusion. The study included 65 patients with extracranial internal carotid artery occlusion who underwent carotid endarterectomy, carotid endarterectomy combined with Fogarty catheter embolectomy, or hybrid surgery in the Department of Neurosurgery, Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University, China between January 2006 and December 2012. Prior to surgery, all patients underwent perfusion CT or xenon CT to evaluate the occlusion.

Knockdown of CUG-binding protein 1 induces apoptosis of human laryngeal cancer cells.

To investigate the role of CUG-binding protein 1 (CUGBP1) in human laryngeal cancer, we employed lentivirus-mediated short hairpin RNA (shRNA) to knockdown CUGBP1 expression in Hep-2 cells. Depletion of CUGBP1 remarkably inhibited the proliferation of Hep-2 cells. CUGBP1 knockdown induced cell cycle arrest in S phase, especially in the sub-G1 phase, representing apoptotic cells.
