Bayesian identification and estimation of radon-related increased hazard rates of cancer death in the updated French cohort of uranium miners (1946-2014).

Objective: A recent update of the French cohort of uranium miners added seven years of follow-up data. We use these new data to look for new possible radon-related increased risks and refine the estimation of the potential association between cumulative radon exposure and four cancer sites: lung cancer, kidney cancer, brain and central nervous system (CNS) cancer and leukemia (excluding chronic lymphocytic leukemia, which is not radiation-induced).

Methods: Several parametric survival models are proposed, fitted and compared under the Bayesian paradigm, to perform new and original exposure-risk analyses.

[Short version of recommendations for enhanced recovery program (ERP) for cystectomy: Technical measures].

Introduction: The enhanced recovery program (ERP) is a management mode whose objective is to reduce the risk of complications and allow the patient to recover more quickly all its functional capacities and to reintegrate at most quickly and safely in his usual environment. This intentionally synthetic document aims to disseminate in the urological community the main points of the ERP recommendations for cystectomy. This work, coordinated by AFU, involves several other partners.

Regression of coronary atherosclerosis with infusions of the high-density lipoprotein mimetic CER-001 in patients with more extensive plaque burden.

Background: CER-001 is an engineered pre-beta high-density lipoprotein (HDL) mimetic, which rapidly mobilizes cholesterol. Infusion of CER-001 3 mg/kg exhibited a potentially favorable effect on plaque burden in the CHI-SQUARE (Can HDL Infusions Significantly Quicken Atherosclerosis Regression) study. Since baseline atheroma burden has been shown as a determinant for the efficacy of HDL infusions, the degree of baseline atheroma burden might influence the effect of CER-001.

Motivations of patients seeking supportive care for cancer from physicians prescribing homeopathic or conventional medicines: results of an observational cross-sectional study.

Background & Aims: The motivations of patients who consult a homeopathic (GP-Ho) or conventional (GP-CM) general practitioner for supportive care during cancer treatment have not been widely studied. We investigated the reasons why cancer patients consult a GP-Ho versus a GP-CM for supportive care and the GPs' motivations for their prescriptions.

Methods: This observational survey was carried out in France between October 2008 and October 2011.

Digital signal processing for step-scan phase and electrochemical potential double-modulation Fourier transform infrared spectrometry.

Step-scan double-modulation (phase and electrochemical potential) Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry provides both spectroscopic and dynamic information about faradaic reactions. Recently introduced digital signal processing (DSP) can be used, instead of two lock-in amplifiers, for the optical signal demodulation at two modulation frequencies. In order to establish the merits of double-modulation FT-IR spectrometry with DSP, spectro-electrochemical experiments are performed in the attenuated total reflection configuration and with the commonly used ferri/ferrocyanide redox couple.

Ultrathin molecularly imprinted polymer sensors employing enhanced transmission surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy.

An ultrathin novel nanosensor (31.5 +/- 4.1 nm thick in the absence of analytes), employing a molecularly imprinted polymer as a recognition element for cholesterol and gold nanoparticle enhanced transmission surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy for detection, was constructed.

Infrared spectroscopic ellipsometry (IRSE) is a powerful optical probe of various chemical and physical properties of molecules adsorbed onto solid surfaces. In particular, IRSE can be useful for detecting adsorption-induced changes in the IR spectra of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), and unlike traditional IR absorption spectroscopies, IRSE provides useful information about the phase of the reflected radiation from the SAMs. However, in the standard IRSE experimental geometry using flat substrates for SAMs, the detectable signal containing these phase data is considerably weaker than the corresponding absorbance data.

The follow-up of renal cancer is essentially based on thoracoabdominal computed tomography (CT). The duration of this follow-up and the frequency of examinations depend on the patient's level of risk. Early detection of metastases has a limited therapeutic value at the present time, apart from tumours with a good prognosis or for the management of complications.

Nanostructured gold hollow microspheres prepared on dissolvable ceramic hollow sphere templates.

Fifty and one-hundred micrometer diameter nanostructured gold hollow microspheres (GHSs), in >98% purity, have been prepared by using ceramic hollow spheres, CHSs, as templates. Tennanometer diameter gold nanoparticles were covalently linked to the thiol moiety of (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane, which had been self-assembled onto the CHSs. Greater structural strength was obtained by the generation of additional gold nanoparticles, in situ on the gold nanoparticle coated CHSs (by immersing the gold nanoparticle coated CHSs into an aqueous mixture of hydroxylamine and gold chloride).

Preparation of cadmium sulfide nanoparticles in self-reproducing reversed micelles.

Octyl octanoate (O-OL) underwent hydrolysis in sodium octanoate (NaOA) reversed micelles in 85:15 = isooctane:octanol (OL) (v/v), containing w = [H2O]/[NaOA] = 40. The products of the hydrolysis, octanoic acid (OA) and octanol (OL), lead to the formation of additional (albeit smaller) reversed micelles; hence the process is considered to be self-reproducing. Self-reproduction was found to be catalyzed by lithium hydroxide, solubilized in the water pools, as well as by hydrogen sulfide, added to the solution of the reversed micelles.

Nanosensors based on responsive polymer brushes and gold nanoparticle enhanced transmission surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy.

Swelling (and shrinking) of poly(2-vinylpyridine), P2VP, polymer brushes, caused by pH changes, could be readily monitored by transmission surface plasmon resonance, T-SPR, spectroscopy. Gold nanoparticles attached to the P2VP polymer brushes dramatically enhanced the pH-induced shift in the T-SPR absorption spectra. In-situ analysis of stepwise self-assembled 1,6-hexanedithiol multilayers by surface plasmon resonance measurements.

Urinary tract infection is frequent during pregnancy with a high potential risk for mother and child. Based on a review of the literature and a retrospective survey conducted in 20 representative French university hospitals during 1993, the authors propose a practical review designed to standardize the therapeutic approach to this disease.
