This study examined the potential health risks posed by the operation of 96 waste-to-energy (WtE) plants in 30 cities in the Bohai Rim of China. Utilizing a sophisticated simulation approach, the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model coupled with the California Puff (CALPUFF) model, we obtained the spatial distribution of pollutants emitted by WtE plants in the atmosphere. Within the framework of the present paper, the operation of 6 waste incineration plants (five grate and one fluidized bed incinerator) have been analysed in terms of hourly steam production, waste throughput, auxiliary fuel consumption and air surplus over one year. The elevated amount of degradable organic carbon in landfills results in the development of biogeochemical hot-spots associated with high rates of microbial activity and the generation of landfill gas and leachate as metabolic products. Our results demonstrate that the electrical conductivity is mainly sensitive to the increase in the fluid conductivity associated to leachate production and migration.
