Neutron scattering from myelin revisited: bilayer asymmetry and water-exchange kinetics.

Rapid nerve conduction in the central and peripheral nervous systems (CNS and PNS, respectively) of higher vertebrates is brought about by the ensheathment of axons with myelin, a lipid-rich, multilamellar assembly of membranes. The ability of myelin to electrically insulate depends on the regular stacking of these plasma membranes and on the presence of a number of specialized membrane-protein assemblies in the sheath, including the radial component, Schmidt-Lanterman incisures and the axo-glial junctions of the paranodal loops. The disruption of this fine-structure is the basis for many demyelinating neuropathies in the CNS and PNS.

Early course of schizophrenia in a representative Dutch incidence cohort.

Purpose: To describe the early course of psychotic disorders in general and to examine whether certain variables can predict the early course of schizophrenic disorders (DSM-IV: schizophrenia, schizophreniform or schizoaffective disorder).

Subjects And Method: Follow-up and re-diagnosis of a highly representative Dutch incidence cohort (N=181), thirty months after first contact with a physician for a psychotic disorder. Poor course was defined as a continuous psychotic illness or a score of less than 39 on the Global Assessment of Functioning scale.

Cannabis use and age at onset of schizophrenia.

Objective: The purpose of the study was to assess the independent influences of gender and cannabis use on milestones of early course in schizophrenia.

Method: In this population-based, first-contact incidence study conducted in The Hague, the Netherlands, patients (N=133) were interviewed with the Comprehensive Assessment of Symptoms and History, and key informants were interviewed with the Instrument for the Retrospective Assessment of the Onset of Schizophrenia. Milestones of early course were 1) first social and/or occupational dysfunction, 2) first psychotic episode, and 3) first negative symptoms.

Use of illicit substances in a psychosis incidence cohort: a comparison among different ethnic groups in the Netherlands.

Objective: Use of illicit substances has been suggested as an explanation for the increased incidence of psychosis among some immigrant groups. The aim of the present study is to compare the rates of illicit substance use among immigrants with a first psychosis with that among non-migrants.

Incidence of psychotic disorders in immigrant groups to The Netherlands.

Background: Previous reports on the incidence of schizophrenia in immigrant groups to The Netherlands were based on hospital data.

Aims: To compare the incidence of psychotic disorders in the immigrant groups to that in natives.

Method: Two-year first-contact incidence study in The Hague.

Clinical, microbiological and pathological observations in laboratory beagle dogs infected with leptospires of the serogroup Sejroe.

In beagle dogs infections with two different serovars of serogroup Sejroe are described. Saxkoebing titres of 27 beagle dogs were controlled for 7 to 9 months. Dogs serologically positive for saxkoebing showed no clinical symptoms.

Mucin glycoproteins as tumor markers.

Extensive biochemical studies have shown that mucin tumor antigens have a range of molecular sizes from 200 to greater than 1000 kDa. The molecular size of mucin antigens can be dramatically affected by the source and method of purification. Mucin antigens vary from 24 to 80% in carbohydrate content and their density is usually greater than 1.

Paget's disease of the breast.

Paget's disease of the breast is often an important early warning sign of underlying breast carcinoma, usually arising from the major mammary ducts. Because the conditions may be confused with benign diseases of the nipple, treatment is frequently delayed. If Paget's disease is the sole indication for surgery, the likelihood of cure is high.

Modified radical mastectomy with immediate breast reconstruction.

The authors reviewed 100 consecutive patients with breast cancer treated by modified radical mastectomy and immediate breast reconstruction in order to assess the safety and efficacy of this procedure in terms of cancer control. The study began in 1978 and is continuing. The procedure involves a two-team approach with both the general surgeon and the plastic surgeon interviewing the patient preoperatively.

Healing of malignant hypertensive arteriopathy in Dahl rats by nifedipine.

Pathomorphological studies were undertaken to investigate the therapeutic effect of the Ca2+-antagonist nifedipine on malignant hypertensive arteriopathy in Dahl salt-sensitive rats. The individual course of disease was followed by comparing pre-treatment biopsies of the mesenteric arteries with post-treatment findings at necropsy. Within seven weeks, continuous therapy with nifedipine resulted in healing of early vascular lesions and in partial repair of the more advanced ones.

Control of an outbreak of mouse coccidiosis in a closed colony.

In 1979 severe coccidiosis occurred within a closed colony of C57bl/6J Bom mice. The coccidiosis caused diarrhoea, weight loss and deaths. Pathogenicity and response to chemotherapy were studied in experimentally infected Bor: CFW1 (SPF) mice.

Mammographic and pathologic correlation of microcalcification in disease of the breast.

Fifty-five patients with isolated microcalcification clusters and no palpable tumor of the breast were studied. All patients underwent appropriate localization biopsies and had roentgenographic, specimen roentgenographic examination of histologic confirmation that the area of microcalcification was removed. Fifteen patients proved to have a malignant lesion at biopsy and in 40 patients, it proved to be benign.

Deoxyribonucleotide biosynthesis in synchronous algae cells.

Synchronous cells of the green alga, Scenedesmus obliquus, cultured in a 14-h/10-h light/dark regime, contain a peak of ribonucleoside-diphosphate reductase activity and maximum deoxyribonucleoside 5'-triphosphate concentrations at the 12th hour of the cell cycle, coinciding with DNA synthesis and preceding the formation of eight daughter cells. The intracellular dTTP pool reaches 4.5 pmol and the other pools 2-3 pmol/10(6) cells.

DNA polymerase with characteristics of reverse transcriptase purified from human milk.

A DNA polymerase purified from a particulate fraction of human milk has biochemical and biophysical properties similar to those of viral reverse transcriptases. This enzyme is immunologically distinct from cellular DNA polymerases obtained from a variety of human sources.
