The experimental study and transplantation of pancreatic islets requires their isolation from the surrounding tissue, and therefore, from the vasculature. Under these conditions, avascular islets rely on the diffusion of peripheral oxygen and nutrients to comply with the requirements of islet cells while responding to changes in body glucose. As a complement to the experimental work, computational models have been widely used to estimate how avascular islets would be affected by the hypoxic conditions found both in culture and transplant sites.

In pancreatic islets, hormone secretion is tightly regulated by both internal and external mechanisms, including electrical communication and paracrine signaling between islet cells. Given its complexity, the experimental study of pancreatic islets has been complemented with computational modeling as a tool to gain a better understanding about how all the mechanisms involved at different levels of organization interact.

This is particularly relevant in the case of species that are highly mobile and dependent on sparse and unpredictable trophic resources, such as vultures. Here, we used the GPS-tagged data of 127 adult Griffon Vultures captured at five different breeding regions in Spain to describe the movement patterns (home-range size and fidelity, and monthly cumulative distance).

In this protocol, the three-dimensional architecture of a pancreatic islet is firstly reconstructed from experimental data using a novel computational algorithm. Next, the morphological and connectivity properties of the reconstructed islet, such as the number and percentages of the different type of cells, cellular volume, and cell-to-cell contacts, are obtained.

As long-lived species, the demographic dynamics of vultures can be disrupted by spatiotemporal fluctuations in food availability, with dramatic impacts on their population viability and the ecosystem services provided. In Europe, the outbreak of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in 2001 prompted a restrictive sanitary regulation banning the presence of livestock carcasses in the wild on a continental scale.

This prolific interaction relies on the capability of implementing computational models and methods to derive quantitative data for the analysis and interpretation of experimental observations. In this addendum I introduce Isletlab, a multiplatform application developed to provide the research community with a user-friendly interface for the implementation of computational algorithms for the characterization and simulation of pancreatic islets.

In spite of the fact that relevant structural differences between mouse and human islet architectures have been described, the functional implications of these differences remain only partially understood. In this work, aiming to contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between structural and functional properties of pancreatic islets, we reconstructed human and mice islets in order to perform a structural comparison based on both morphologic and network-derived metrics.

We present seven practices learned from a collaborative project focused on invasive species in the Great Lakes region (USA-CAN). These practices were based on a researcher-manager model composed of a research team, a management advisory board, and a bridging organization.

By using the nuclei coordinates of islet cells obtained through DAPI staining, cell types identified by immunostaining, and cell size distributions estimated from capacitance measurements, reconstructed islets composed of non-overlapping spherical cells were obtained through an iterative optimization procedure. In all cases, the reconstructed architectures included >99% of the experimental identified cells, each of them having a radius within the experimentally reported ranges.

Even though it is generally assumed that the gating of ionic channels is a Markovian phenomenon, reports based on non-traditional analyses of experimental recordings suggest that non-Markovian processes might be also present. While the stochastic Markov models are by far the most adopted approach for the modeling of ionic channels, a model based on the idea of a deterministic process underlying the gating of ionic channels was proposed by Liebovitch and Toth (Liebovitch, L.

Markov models of single channels were first developed based on the analysis of electrophysiological data. Monte Carlo simulations of voltage-clamp experiments were performed in an iteratively optimization procedure to estimate the number of channels required to reproduce the main characteristics of the macroscopic currents recorded experimentally.

Background: It is estimated that 37% of Mexican adults have undiagnosed diabetes, and are therefore at high risk of developing the severe and devastating complications associated to it. In recent years, a variety of screening tools based on the characteristics of the adult Mexican population have been proposed in order to reduce the negative effects of the disease.
Objectives: To assess the performance of screening models to diagnose diabetes in the Mexican adult population and to propose a screening model based on HbA1c measurements.
In this paper, it is shown that pure chitosan nanofibers and films were prepared with success in 0.5 M acetic acid as solvent using poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) at different yields, allowing electrospinning of the blends. After processing, a neutralization step of chitosan followed by water washing is performed, preserving the initial morphology of chitosan materials.

Multi-species large-scale monitoring schemes have often provided such estimates relying on extrapolation of relative abundances in particular habitats to large-scale areas. Here we show an alternative to inference-rich predictive models, proposing methods to deal with caveats of population size estimations in habitat-specialist species, reed warblers (Acrocephalus scirpaceus and Acrocephalus arundinaceus).

It has been observed experimentally that subpopulations of cortical mitochondria and ER associate to secretory sites in bovine chromaffin cells. Here, we study the effect of the geometrical distribution of the co-localized cortical organelles both in the formation of HCMDs in the vicinity of Ca channels and on the secretory activity of bovine chromaffin cells in response to a single voltage pulse.

Background: Prevalence of diabetes in Mexico has constantly increased since 1993. Since type 2 diabetes may remain undiagnosed for many years, identification of subjects at high risk of diabetes is very important to reduce its impact and to prevent its associated complications.

To understand whether early phenotypes are adaptive, knowledge of the environmental factors involved in their variation and the derived benefits from their expression is needed. Temperature and sunlight are considered two major selective forces influencing phenotypic coloration of birds at a global scale. However, within-population color adaptations in response to sunlight temperature variation have been scarcely investigated, and their acclimatization capacity is currently unknown.
