Article Synopsis
  • Research on how organizations react to performance across multiple goals is limited, often focusing only on search intensity without considering where that search happens.
  • This study uses behavioral theory to show that when performance on a main goal is below expectations, organizations increase their search efforts both within familiar technologies and in the external environment.
  • However, if performance on a secondary goal is high despite poor primary goal performance, organizations tend to reduce their search efforts, suggesting that feedback on multiple, unevenly important goals influences strategic decision-making.
