Background: Autoimmune encephalitis (AIE) is a group of inflammatory diseases characterized by the presence of antibodies against neuronal and glial antigens, leading to subacute psychiatric symptoms, memory complaints, and movement disorders. The patients are predominantly young, and delays in treatment are associated with worse prognosis.
Objective: With the support of the Brazilian Academy of Neurology (Academia Brasileira de Neurologia, ABN) and the Brazilian Society of Child Neurology (Sociedade Brasileira de Neurologia Infantil, SBNI), a consensus on the diagnosis and treatment of AIE in Brazil was developed using the Delphi method.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS) characterized by damage to the myelin sheaths of oligodendrocytes. Currently, there is no specific biomarker to identify the disease; however, a diagnostic criterion has been established based on patient's clinical, laboratory, and imaging characteristics, which assists in identifying this condition. The primary method for diagnosing MS is the McDonald criteria, first described in 2001 and revised in the years 2005, 2012, and 2017.

Our study focused on natural mDCs that were isolated from HCs and MS patient peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). After a 24-h treatment with IL-27 ± lipopolysaccharide (LPS), the mDCs were either harvested to identify IL-27-regulated gene expression or co-cultured with naive T-cells to measure how the treated DC affected T-cell proliferation and cytokine secretion.

This study aimed to assess fatigue and neuropsychological performance and investigate changes in the thickness and volume of gray matter (GM) and microstructural abnormalities in the white matter (WM) in a group of patients with mild-to-moderate coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
Methods: We studied 56 COVID-19 patients and 37 matched controls using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Background: Limitations in physical function are common in Multiple Sclerosis (MS), yet it is neither clear how muscle power implicates physical function and walking-fatigability. This pilot-study aims to investigate (1) deficits in muscle power/force alongside walking in persons with MS; (2) associations between muscle power/force and physical functions and (3) the impact of prolonged walking in muscle power/force.
Methods: 30 relapse-remitting persons with MS and 28 healthy controls performed chair rise and plantar flexion on a force platform before and after 12-minutes of intermittent walking to measure lower extremity muscle power/force.

The Scientific Department of Neuroimmunology of the Brazilian Academy of Neurology (DCNI/ABN) and Brazilian Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunological Diseases (BCTRIMS) provide recommendations in this document for vaccination of the population with demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system (CNS) against infections in general and against the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which causes COVID-19. We emphasize the seriousness of the current situation in view of the spread of COVID-19 in our country. Therefore, reference guides on vaccination for clinicians, patients, and public health authorities are particularly important to prevent some infectious diseases.

Background: Neurofilament Light (NfL) chain levels in both cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum have been correlated with the reduction of axonal damage in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients treated with Natalizumab (NTZ). However, little is known about the function of plasmacytoid cells in NTZ-treated MS patients.
Objective: To evaluate CSF NfL, serum levels of soluble-HLA-G (sHLA-G), and eventual tolerogenic behavior of plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) in MS patients during NTZ treatment.
Cannabinoids comprehend endocannabinoids, phytocannabinoids, and synthetic cannabinoids, with actions both in the central and peripherical nervous systems. A considerable amount of publications have been made in recent years, although cannabis has been known for over a thousand years. Scientific Departments from the Brazilian Academy of Neurology described evidence for medical use in their areas.

Objective: To examine the effects of hippotherapy on postural balance, functional mobility, self-perceived fatigue, and quality of life in people with MS.
Methods: Participants were assigned into a hippotherapy intervention group (n= 17) or a control group (n= 16).
Objective: To identify clinical variables that could predict the presence of autoantibodies in patients with acute encephalitis.
Methods: An observational, retrospective study from May 2011 to May 2017. Clinical, EEG, brain MRI data, and antibodies against human neuronal antigens (NMDAR, GABAR, AMPAR, LGI1, CASPR2, and GAD) from 158 patients with criteria for possible autoimmune encephalitis were analyzed to create a predictive model for this disease.
Background: Walking dysfunction is one of the most common symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS).
Objective: To evaluate the effects of an 8-week hippotherapy intervention on walking performance and spatiotemporal gait parameters in people with relapsing-remitting MS; and to examine whether the effects of hippotherapy on walking performance are mediated by changes in spatiotemporal gait parameters.
Methods: Participants were assigned into a hippotherapy intervention group (n = 17) or a control group (n = 16).
Neuropsychiatric disorders in multiple sclerosis have been known since the original clinicopathological description by Charcot in the late nineteenth century. Charcot, in the last decades of his life, became involved in the field of neuropsychiatry. This produced a battle between rival schools in the era that still echoes to this day.

Methods: The PDDS underwent translation and back-translation procedures for producing a Brazilian Portuguese version of the PDDS (PDDS/BR). Sixty-three patients with MS (48 females) completed the PDDS/BR and underwent a neurological examination for generation of Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) scores.
Background: The mechanisms of action of dimethyl fumarate (DMF), and its metabolite, monomethyl fumarate (MMF), for the treatment of multiple sclerosis are not completely elucidated.
Objectives: To discuss the role of DMF/MMF-induced hydroxycarboxylic acid receptor 2 (HCA/GPR109A) pathway activation in the immune response and treatment of MS.
Methods: A narrative (traditional) review of the current literature.
Introduction: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a debilitating neurologic disorder with poor survival rates and no clear biomarkers for disease diagnosis and prognosis.
Methods: We compared serum microRNA (miRNA) expression from patients with ALS with healthy controls and patients with multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer disease. We also correlated miRNA expression in cross-sectional and longitudinal cohorts of ALS patients with clinical parameters.
Background: Physiological factors such as muscle weakness and balance could explain declines in walking distance by multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. The purpose of this study was to characterize levels and examine associations among decline in walking distance, balance and muscular strength in women with mild MS.
Methods: Participants included 28 women with mild relapsing-remitting MS and 21 women without MS.
Background: Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) and its active metabolite monomethyl fumarate (MMF) effectively lead to reduction in disease relapses and active magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) lesions. DMF and MMF are known to be effective in modulating T- and B-cell responses; however, their effect on the phenotype and function of human myeloid dendritic cells (mDCs) is not fully understood.
Objective: To investigate the role of MMF on human mDCs maturation and function.
Importance: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are promising multiple sclerosis (MS) biomarkers. Establishing the association between miRNAs and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measures of disease severity will help define their significance and potential impact.
Objective: To correlate circulating miRNAs in the serum of patients with MS to brain and spinal MRI.
Given the low detection rates of CSF IgG-Oligoclonal bands (IgG-OCB) in non-European Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients and higher specificity of the MRZH-reaction, we evaluated whether associating MRZH-reaction to CSF IgG-OCB detection improved investigation of suspected MS. Paired CSF and sera were analyzed for IgG-OCB and polyspecific viral antibodies. IgG-OCB were detected in 72% of MS patients and an MRZH-reaction in 67%.
