β-Tricalcium phosphate incorporated natural rubber latex membranes for calvarial bone defects: Physicochemical, in vitro and in vivo assessment.

Natural rubber latex membrane (NRL) is a biocompatible macromolecule that stimulates angiogenesis and promotes bone repair. Similarly, β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) is an osteoconductive and osteoinductive bioceramic widely used as a bone substitute. Here, we investigated the combined use of these biomaterials in the guided bone regeneration process for calvarial defects in rats.

Performance of intraoperative neurocognitive tests during awake surgery for patients with diffuse low-grade glioma.

Despite great advancements and the diffusion of awake surgery for brain tumors, the literature shows that the tests applied during the procedure are heterogeneous and non-standardized. This prospective, observational, descriptive study collected data on intraoperative brain mapping and the performance of multiple neurocognitive tests in 51 awake surgeries for diffuse low-grade glioma. Frequency of use and rate of intraoperative findings of different neurocognitive tests were analyzed.

Awake Craniotomy for Diffuse Low Grade Gliomas in a Resource Limited Setting: Lessons Learned with a Consecutive Series of 51 Surgeries.

Objective: Despite benefits of awake craniotomy (AC) many centers do not have access to it. We demonstrated the oncological and functional results of our initial experience in implementing AC in a context of resource limited setting.

Methods: This prospective, observational, and descriptive study collected the first 51 AC for diffuse low-grade glioma, classified according to the 2016 World Health Organization.

Score system for cytological evaluation of fine-needle aspiration specimens to predict the diagnosis of papillary thyroid carcinomas.

Introduction: According to the World Health Organization's classification of endocrine tumors, papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) accounts for almost 90 % of malignant thyroid neoplasms. This study aimed to create a point system based on cytomorphological criteria for evaluating FNA products from thyroid nodules to predict the risk of papillary thyroid carcinomas.

Methods: This was an analytical observational study based on a retrospective analysis of cytological reports and surgical specimens from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2021.

Metronidazole-loaded gold nanoparticles in natural rubber latex as a potential wound dressing.

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have shown interesting properties and specific biofunctions, providing benefits and new opportunities for controlled release systems. In this research, we demonstrated the use of natural rubber latex (NRL) from Hevea brasiliensis as a carrier of AuNPs and the antibiotic metronidazole (MET). We prepared AuNP-MET-NRL and characterized by physicochemical, biological and in vitro release assays.

This study aimed to differentiate human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) from the human umbilical cord in cholinergic-like neurons using a natural membrane. The isolation of hMSCs from Wharton's jelly (WJ) was carried out using "explant" and mononuclear cells by the density gradient from umbilical blood and characterized by flow cytometry. hMSCs were seeded in a natural functional biopolymer membrane to produce neurospheres.

The incorporation of drugs and bioactive compounds in the natural rubber latex (NRL) matrix has been an alternative for the development of transdermal release membranes. Ibuprofen (IBF) is known to be used to treat inflammatory diseases, but when administered orally, high concentrations can cause some adverse problems. In this work, the incorporation of IBF in the NRL membranes was evaluated by physical-chemical, permeation, hemocompatibility and molecular modeling assays.

Encapsulating Peritoneal Sclerosis in a kidney transplant recipient - Case Report.

Encapsulating Peritoneal Sclerosis (EPS) is a severe and rare condition frequently associated with peritoneal dialysis, characterized by bowel obstruction, with lethal consequences in 20% of the patients. The disease presents as a mass of fibrous tissue encapsulating visceral organs that may potentially compromise digestive tract function. This report describes the case of a patient under peritoneal dialysis (PD) due to chronic kidney disease secondary to focal segmental glomerulosclerosis diagnosed with EPS.

Which spatial arrangement of green manure is able to reduce herbivory and invasion of exotic grasses in native species?

The practice of using green manure for ecological restoration has grown so significantly that there is a shortage of seeds for purchase on the market. Nonetheless, there is very little literature available demonstrating the effects and benefits commonly cited for green manure for addressing important environmental filters, such as herbivory and invasive grasses. Our objective is to determine which spatial sowing arrangement including green manure promotes the lowest rates of herbivory on native species and decreases cover by invasive grasses in ecological restoration.

Simultaneous Bilateral Knee Varus Stress Radiographic Technique.

Varus stress radiographs are reported as an effective and cost-beneficial diagnostic and decision-making tool for lateral knee injuries, both in the acute and chronic settings. The opening of the lateral compartment is reported to vary according to the number of structures injured, helping to differentiate isolated fibular collateral ligament injury from grade-III posterolateral corner injury. Natural rubber latex (NRL) is a natural polymer which has arisen large interest in the biomedical field, mostly, due to its ability to facilitate angiogenesis and therefore, tissue repair. Moxifloxacin (MXF) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic orally administrated. Considering the biological properties of the NRL and its ability to deliver a wide range of compounds, the present study aimed to develop a novel device for infected chronic wound treatment.

Propolis is a complex resinous product prepared by Apis mellifera with the aim of protecting beehives against infectious microorganisms. It is flora-dependent and its antimicrobial activity can vary according to its geographical origin.

Natural latex-glycerol dressing to reduce nipple pain and healing the skin in breastfeeding women.

Background: Nipple pain is the second most common reason for early weaning, exceeded only by the insufficient milk supply. Nipple fissures can bring other problems, acting also as a portal for bacteria and leading to mastitis. This work proposes the breast protector composite development using materials with tissue repair and moisturizing properties, aligned with a low-cost procedure, aiming not only to relieve pain, but also to heal the nipple fissures caused by breastfeeding.

Awake craniotomy for a cavernous angioma in the Broca's area.

Cavernous angiomas constitute 5%-10% of cerebrovascular malformations and may cause seizure and neurological deficits from bleeding. The authors present a case of a 44-year-old man with a 3.5-year history of epilepsy without complete seizure control despite anticonvulsants.

Eletromyography of abdominal muscles in different physical exercises: An update protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: The abdominal muscles are extremely important because they are directly involved in the functions of support, containment of viscera, and help in the process of expiration, defecation, urination, vomiting, and also at the time of childbirth. Many exercises and equipment are used to strengthen the abdominal muscles, and the workouts are proposed for a variety of purposes, such as preventing and rehabilitating low back pain, improving sports performance, achieving aesthetic standards, among others. Exercises that potentiate the electromyographic activity promote a greater recruitment of muscle fibers and are more effective to improve or maintain of the force.

Actively station: Effects on global cognition of mature adults and healthy elderly program using eletronic games.

Unlabelled: Studies show that aging is accompanied by decline in cognitive functions but also indicate that interventions, such as training on electronic games, can enhance performance and promote maintenance of cognitive abilities in healthy older adults.

Objective: To investigate the effects of an electronic game program, called Actively Station, on the performance of global cognition of adults aged over 50 years.

Methods: 124 mature and elderly adults enrolled in the "Actively Station" cognitive stimulation program of São Caetano do Sul City, in the State of São Paulo, participated in training for learning of electronic games.

Choroidal neovascularization silent on optical coherence tomography: report of two cases.

Herein, we report two cases of vision loss after successful cataract surgery, associated with drusenoid retinal pigment epithelial detachment without features of choroidal neovascularization on optical coherence tomography along with angiographic examinations suggestive of choroidal neovascularization in which anatomical and functional improvements were achieved with intravitreal injections of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor.

Effects of glyphosate acid and the glyphosate-commercial formulation (Roundup) on Dimorphandra wilsonii seed germination: Interference of seed respiratory metabolism.

Glyphosate-formulations are widely used in the Brazilian Cerrado (neotropical savanna) with little or no control, threatening population of the endangered species Dimorphandra wilsonii. We investigated the toxicity of different concentrations (0, 5, 25 and 50 mg l) of glyphosate acid and one of its formulations (Roundup) on seed germination in D. wilsonii.

Photoreceptor Arrangement Changes Secondary to Choroidal Nevus.

Importance: Although mostly asymptomatic, patients with choroidal nevi carry a moderate risk for malignant transformation and visual loss. A novel noninvasive imaging assessment could change the current clinical evaluation of choroidal nevi.

Observation: Three patients with a recent diagnosis of choroidal nevi underwent a novel adaptive optical assessment that detected potential photoreceptor abnormalities in the retina overlying the choroidal nevi.
