Article Synopsis
  • * A study revealed that the MED whitefly is a more efficient vector for transmitting CPMMV compared to MEAM1, with the ability to spread the virus rapidly during brief contact.
  • * Understanding the dynamics of CPMMV transmission and the whitefly species' distribution is critical for developing effective management strategies to protect soybean crops in Brazil, highlighting the need for further research into these ecological shifts.

Bemisia tabaci Middle East-Asia Minor 1 (MEAM1) is a significant pest that damages a wide range of high-value vegetable crops in south Florida. This pest has demonstrated the ability to develop resistance to various insecticide groups worldwide. Monitoring the resistance levels of MEAM1 populations and maintaining baseline susceptibility data are crucial for the long-term effectiveness of insecticide management strategies.

Article Synopsis
  • * Whiteflies are problematic because they infest numerous crops, reproduce quickly, and can spread viruses; the main species in South America include several from the complex known as Middle East-Asia Minor 1, Mediterranean, and New World.
  • * The text reviews current research on whitefly management in South America, discussing their distribution and associated viruses, and providing management strategies that include cultural practices and control methods, while highlighting areas for future research.

Soybean stem necrosis is caused by cowpea mild mottle virus (CPMMV), transmitted by the whitefly . CPMMV has already been recorded in all major soybean-producing areas of Brazil. The impacts caused by CPMMV to the current Brazilian soybean production are unknown, thus the main objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of CPMMV infection on the main important soybean cultivars grown in the Southern and Midwestern regions of Brazil.

The whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), is one of the most important agricultural pests and virus vectors worldwide. Bemisia tabaci is considered a complex of cryptic species with at least 44 species. Among them, the species Middle East-Asia Minor 1 (MEAM1, formerly B biotype) and Mediterranean (MED, formerly Q biotype) are the most important, and they have attained global status.
