Background: Abdominoplasty is a critical aesthetic and functional procedure for individuals who have undergone massive weight loss. Numerous techniques have been proposed to optimize aesthetic results while minimizing complications.

Methods: This prospective study examined 500 patients who underwent abdominoplasty during body-contouring procedures between 1 January 2018 and 31 December 2021 at a tertiary center.

Authors comment on the paper "The effect of drains and compressive garments versus progressive tensioning sutures on seroma formation in abdominoplasty" written by Brown et al in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.Although the authors present interesting results on the effectiveness of progressive tensioning sutures proposed originally by Pollok and Pollok, we express some considerations about the analyzed data and patients, hoping in a new research extending these findings to include both aesthetic and post-bariatric abdominoplasty patients, evaluating the effectiveness of these sutures in varied contexts.Level of Evidence V This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article.

Authors comment on the paper "Meta-analysis of the oncological safety of autologous fat grafting after breast cancer on basic science and clinical studies" written by Kai Wang et al in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Although the authors present interesting results on the safety of autologous fat graft after breast cancer and breast reconstruction, we express some considerations about the analyzed manuscript and about the safety of this procedure in specific cohort of patients having particular cancer characteristics.Level of Evidence V This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article.

Authors comment on the paper "Platelet-Rich Plasma for Treatment of Hair Loss Improves Patient-Reported Quality of Life" written by Abigail Meyers et al in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Although the authors present interesting results on the quality of life of patients after platelet-rich plasma, we express some considerations about the proposed composition of PRP and hoping in larger sample study.Level of Evidence V This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article.

Article Synopsis
  • The popularity of hyaluronic acid (HA)-based aesthetic treatments has surged, with over 4.3 million procedures performed in 2019, marking a 15.7% increase from the previous year.
  • Concerns have arisen due to the growing number of untrained providers, leading to reports of adverse effects and complications related to these treatments.
  • This research reviews the effects of HA fillers on patients with autoimmune conditions like scleroderma and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, highlighting that while there are controversies, recent evidence suggests potential benefits without contraindications for these patients.

Objectives: To evaluate the expression of sodium-glucose transporter 2 (SGLT2), inflammatory cytokines, and sirtuins in breast fat tissue at baseline, and serum cytokines of fatty vs. non-fatty pre-menopausal women at baseline, and at 12 months of follow-up. To correlate SGLT2/cytokines/sirtuins expression to clinical variables, and their changes (Δ) at follow-up, as intima-media wall thickness (IMT), left ventricle mass (LVM), left ventricle ejection fraction (LVEF), and myocardial performance index (MPI), and its normalization.

Due to the increased prevalence of obesity in the last decades, bariatric surgery has been on the rise in recent years. Bariatric surgery is a compelling option for weight loss in obese patients with severe obesity-related comorbidities or for whom lifestyle modifications have proven ineffective. Redundant skin following significant weight loss is a common occurrence affecting up to 96% of patients who undergo bariatric surgery, negatively impacting physical and psychosocial health and detracting from activities of daily living.

The role of sirtuin 6 (SIRT6) in adipose abdominal tissue of pre-diabetic (pre-DM) patients is poorly known. Here, we evaluated SIRT6 expression in visceral abdominal fat of obese pre-diabetic patients and the potential effects of metformin therapy. Results indicated that obese pre-DM subjects showed low SIRT6 protein expression and high expression of nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ), and sterol regulatory element-binding transcription factor 1 (SREBP-1).

In obese patients the superficial adipose tissue expresses cytokines, and sirtuins, that may affect myocardial function. In this study, we investigated the effect of metformin therapy added to a hypocaloric diet on the inflammatory pattern and cardiac performance (MPI) in obese patients with pre-diabetic condition. Fifty-eight obese patients that were enrolled for abdominoplastic surgery were divided into patients with pre-diabetic condition (n 40) and normo-glycemic patients (n18).
