The proportion of elderly populations is rapidly booming, and human lifespan has considerably increased in the past century because of scientific and medical advances. However, the winds of change brought by the 21st century made sedentarism one of the factors that renders the brain vulnerable to age-related chronic diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). Conversely, physical exercise has been shown to stimulate molecular mechanisms beneficial to cognition.

Purpose: To investigate the role of induction chemotherapy (IC) followed by definitive chemoradiotherapy in people with anal canal cancer with bulky disease at diagnosis.

Patients And Methods: We assessed patient acceptability and treatment feasibility of IC in patients with bulky anal canal malignant lesions.

Results: Theoretical IC advantages may include tumor downsizing and early micrometastasis eradication, without affecting compliance with subsequent standard chemoradiotherapy regimens, as a result of improvement of oxygenation and higher intramural concentration of cytotoxic drugs.

Background: Although oncological results for resection of colon cancer with inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) ligation at its origin (high tie) or immediately below the left colic artery (low tie) are similar, injury of the superior hypogastric plexus may be caused when the IMA is tied at its origin, thus impairing defecatory functions.

Aim: The importance of IMA tie location on defecatory dysfunction in patients undergoing laparoscopic sigmoidal resection without preoperative radiation therapy was studied.

Patients And Methods: From February 2013 to December 2018, 56 consecutive patients submitted to curative laparoscopic resection for stage II and III, M0, sigmoidal cancer were randomized to a high or low tie of the IMA.

Emerging evidence indicates that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the etiologic agent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), can cause neurological complications. We provide a brief overview of these recent observations and discuss some of their possible implications. In particular, given the global dimension of the current pandemic, we highlight the need to consider the possible long-term impact of COVID-19, potentially including neurological and neurodegenerative disorders.

Recent clinical and epidemiological observations point to a correlation between disorders of energy metabolism, such as obesity and diabetes, and cognitive decline and dementia. Many studies indicate that these age-related conditions closely interact with each other, but the underlying molecular and physiological mechanisms for such correlations are largely unknown. Insulin and leptin, hormones classically implicated in diabetes and obesity, are gaining increasing attention for their participation in cognitive processes and memory.

Microtubule-associated protein tau assists in stabilizing microtubules and has been particularly implicated in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Given the importance of tau to AD pathogenesis and therapies, it is important to understand non-classic physiological functions for this protein inside and outside the central nervous system (CNS). Our group has previously shown that tau ablation triggers glucose intolerance and pancreatic dysfunction in mice, suggesting that tau plays a role in peripheral metabolic regulation.

Erythropoietin-producing hepatocellular receptors (Eph) promote the onset and sustain the progression of cancers such as colorectal cancer (CRC), in which the A2 subtype of Eph receptor expression has been shown to correlate with a poor prognosis and has been identified as a promising therapeutic target. Herein, we investigated, and , the effects of treatment with GLPG1790, a potent pan-Eph inhibitor. The small molecule has selective activity against the EphA2 isoform in human HCT116 and HCT15 CRC cell lines expressing a constitutively active form of RAS concurrently with a wild-type or mutant form of p53, respectively.

Cherry fruit has a high content in flavonoids. These are important diet components protecting against oxidative stress, inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction, which are all involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, which is the major cause of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Since the seasonal availability of fresh fruit is limited, research has been focused on cherry extract (CE), which also possesses a high nutraceutical potential.

Obesity has been associated with cognitive decline, atrophy of brain regions related to learning and memory, and higher risk of developing dementia. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying these neurological alterations are still largely unknown. Here, we investigate the effects of palmitate, a saturated fatty acid present at high amounts in fat-rich diets, in the brain.

Independently of age, evidence-based guidelines recommend a multidisciplinary treatment approach in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). But actually, elderly patients are grossly underrepresented in clinical trials, accounting < 10% of enrolled cases. Therefore, LARC management in elderly patients remains a crucial issue in daily practice, especially due to their frailty.
