Changes in the level of estrogen and progesterone receptors in the uterine artery of the rat were studied during pregnancy in order to evaluate the estrogen dependency of this artery. The weight of the uterine artery and its content of estrogen and progesterone receptors were measured. The steroid receptor content was also measured in the uterus and aorta as the tissues of these organs are estrogen-responsive and non-responsive, respectively.

Both index cases, as well as affected family members, had increased expression of the rheumatic B-cell alloantigen D8/17. This test may help differentiate Sydenham chorea from lupus chorea.

The purpose of our study was to examine the natural history, the development of arrhythmias, and the incidence of sudden death in an entire cohort of pediatric and adult WPW patients from a community-based local population.
Methods And Results: We identified 113 residents of Olmsted County, Minnesota, during the period 1953-1989 using the centralized records-linkage system provided by the Mayo Clinic and the Rochester Epidemiology Program Project.
A multicenter, randomized, double-blind, controlled trial compared three beractant (Survanta) administration procedures in the treatment of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome. Infants weighing > or = 600 gm with respiratory distress syndrome who required assisted ventilation were treated within 8 hours of birth with beractant administered intratracheally. Procedure A required administration in two fractional doses after removal of the infant from the ventilator.

Muscarinic receptors play important roles in the regulation of glandular secretion and vasomotor tone in human nasal mucosa. M1, M2, and M3 muscarinic receptor subtypes were pharmacologically characterized in human inferior turbinates by receptor-binding assays using [3H](-)quinuclidinyl benzilate (QNB, identifies total muscarinic receptors) and [3H]-pirenzepine (PZ). Receptors were localized by autoradiography, and their function examined in vitro by assaying mucus secretion from cultured nasal mucosal explants.

Various relatives were screened for factor X deficiency and low and subnormal levels were identified in the father and paternal grandmother, respectively. Factor X deficiency has been previously documented in a family of American Cocker Spaniels, in which the inheritance pattern appeared to be an autosomal dominant trait with variable expression.

Late potentials detected by signal-averaged electrocardiography (SAECG) are an important noninvasive indicator identifying patients with previous myocardial infarction at risk for developing ventricular tachycardia. The role of myocardial ischemia in the development of late potentials is undefined. This study attempts to determine if late potentials on SAECG can be produced during scintigraphically proven ischemia.

Six healthy dogs underwent 3 regimens: 20 ml of dextran/kg of body weight administered in 1 hour (trial A), 20 ml of dextran/kg administered in 30 minutes (trial B), and 0.9% sodium chloride solution as a control administered over 1 hour to achieve hemodilution equivalent to that for 20 ml of dextran/kg (trial C).

The plasma fibrinogen concentration and both Factor VIII:C and von Willebrand factor activity showed gradual increases from mid-gestation and reached maximal, or near maximal activity at parturition. These increases were paralleled by an increase in plasma fibronectin concentration, the appearance of fibrinogen degradation products, and a modest rise in antithrombin III concentration.

The routine coagulation screening assays, namely, the activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and the one-stage prothrombin time (PT), and the specific coagulation assays for the determination of the biological activity of Factors VII, VIII:C and IX, are discussed.

When we compared patients with tremor at onset (n = 27) with those whose disease began with brady-kinesia/rigidity (n = 9), or gait disorder (n = 10), we found no significant differences after a mean of 7 years in motor, cognitive, or affective status. Sixteen of the tremor-onset patients continued to have tremor predominance with minimal gait disorder after about 7 years.

The suppression is studied as a function of the ratio of the two colors used to form the achromatic grating.

Initial screening to ensure the health of the study population included complete histories, physical examinations, thoracic radiography, CBC, serologic tests for feline leukemia virus, feline immunodeficiency virus, and occult heartworm, and sugar and Baermann fecal flotation. In 18 cats, protected catheter brush samples of airway secretions from the lavaged lung segment were taken for culture of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and mycoplasma.

Seven hundred and ninety-eight neonates weighing 600 to 1750 g at birth who had developed respiratory distress syndrome within 6 hours of birth were assigned randomly to receive either 100 mg of phospholipid/kg of Survanta, a modified bovine surfactant (n = 402), or a sham dosing procedure (n = 396). Neonates whose respiratory distress persisted could be given up to three more doses, with all doses to be given in the first 48 hours after birth.

An achromatic grating arrangement in conjunction with a high-pressure mercury-arc lamp is used to produce the white-light fringes. The sensitivity of the coupling to source coherence, crystal orientation, and grating spacing is determined, and a comparison with two-beam coupling with monochromatic light at the same intensity is made.

Two populations of dogs with cutaneous hemangiomas and hemangiosarcomas were evaluated retrospectively. One population consisted of 96 dogs seen at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at the University of California, Davis. The second population consisted of 116 dogs that had skin biopsy specimens submitted to a private veterinary diagnostic laboratory for histologic diagnosis.
