Aging is a risk factor for disease via increased susceptibility to infection, decreased ability to maintain homeostasis, inefficiency in combating stress, and decreased regenerative capacity. Multiple diseases, including urinary tract infection (UTI), are more prevalent with age; however, the mechanisms underlying the impact of aging on the urinary tract mucosa and the correlation between aging and disease remain poorly understood. Here, we show that, relative to young (8-12 weeks) mice, the urothelium of aged (18-24 months) female mice accumulates large lysosomes with reduced acid phosphatase activity and decreased overall autophagic flux in the aged urothelium, indicative of compromised cellular homeostasis.

The search for new metal-based photosensitizers (PSs) for anticancer photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a fast-developing field of research. Knowing that polymetallic complexes bear a high potential as PDT PSs, in this study, we aimed at combining the known photophysical properties of a rhenium(I) tricarbonyl complex and a ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complex to prepare a ruthenium-rhenium binuclear complex that could act as a PS for anticancer PDT. Herein, we present the synthesis and characterization of such a system and discuss its stability in aqueous solution.

Due to the great potential expressed by an anticancer drug candidate previously reported by our group, namely, Ru-sq ([Ru(DIP)(sq)](PF) (DIP, 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline; sq, semiquinonate ligand), we describe in this work a structure-activity relationship (SAR) study that involves a broader range of derivatives resulting from the coordination of different catecholate-type dioxo ligands to the same Ru(DIP) core. In more detail, we chose catechols carrying either an electron-donating group (EDG) or an electron-withdrawing group (EWG) and investigated the physicochemical and biological properties of their complexes. Several pieces of experimental evidences demonstrated that the coordination of catechols bearing EDGs led to deep-red positively charged complexes - in which the preferred oxidation state of the dioxo ligand is the uninegatively charged semiquinonate.

In severe spinal cord injuries, the tracts conveying motor commands to the spinal cord are disrupted, resulting in paralysis, but many patients still have small numbers of spared fibers. We have found that excitatory deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the mesencephalic locomotor region (MLR), an important control center for locomotion in the brain, markedly improved hindlimb function in rats with chronic, severe, but incomplete spinal cord injury. The medial medullary reticular formation was essential for this effect.

Purpose: The Günther basket inferior vena cava filter (GBF) has been withdrawn from the market because of its mechanical instability, but a number of patients still live with the device.
