Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on acute stroke care in a tertiary stroke centre.

The aim of this study was to evaluate how COVID-19 affected acute stroke care and outcome in patients with acute ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke. We performed a retrospective analysis on patients who were admitted with acute ischemic (AIS) or hemorrhagic (ICH) stroke from September 2020 to May 2021 with and without COVID-19. We recorded demographic and clinical data, imaging parameters, functional outcome and mortality at one year.

Mitochondria form a dynamic network in cells, regulated by the balance between mitochondrial fusion and fission. The inhibition of mitochondrial fission can have positive effects in acute ischemic/reperfusion injury models by preventing the fall in mitochondrial membrane potential associated with fission processes. However, inhibition of fission in chronic models is disadvantageous because it obstructs the elimination of damaged mitochondrial fragments.

Comparison of Mitochondrial and Antineoplastic Effects of Amiodarone and Desethylamiodarone in MDA-MB-231 Cancer Line.

Previously, we have demonstrated that amiodarone (AM), a widely used antiarrhythmic drug, and its major metabolite desethylamiodarone (DEA) both affect several mitochondrial processes in isolated heart and liver mitochondria. Also, we have established DEA's antitumor properties in various cancer cell lines and in a rodent metastasis model. In the present study, we compared AM's and DEA's mitochondrial and antineoplastic effects in a human triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cell line.

Left hemispheric epilepsy is more frequent and has worse clinical course that right hemispheric epilepsy.

Introduction: Few studies demonstrated that focal epilepsy (FE) with left hemispheric (LH) seizure onset is more frequent than with right hemispheric (RH) seizure onset. In addition, patients with LH seizure onset show worse clinical course compared to those with RH seizure onset. The aim of our study was to investigate both issues in a great cohort of FE patients.

Epilepsy is a widespread disease requiring long-term drug treatment. The aim of this study was to collect information on reported suspected adverse drug reactions (sADRs) of antiseizure medications (ASMs) and study their seriousness and outcomes in various system organ classifications (SOCs). We intended to compare old and new ASMs' ADRs.

Correlation of single-fiber electromyography studies and functional status in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Objective: Our aim was to examine the significance of single-fiber electromyography (SFEMG) in patients diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and determine the best correlating parameter with SFEMG parameters and clinical scales across different muscles including facial muscles.

Methods: SFEMG examinations were conducted on the extensor digitorum (ED), frontalis, and orbicularis oculi muscles. Mean jitter, percentage of increased jitter, fiber density (FD), and impulse blocking percentage were compared to reference values and functional scales.

Methods of Assessment of Zinc Status in Humans: An Updated Review and Meta-analysis.

Context: The assessment of zinc status is difficult but essential for the identification of zinc deficiency and evaluation of interventions to improve zinc status.

Objective: The purpose of this systematic review (SR) and meta-analysis was to update the previously published SR of biomarkers of zinc status, conducted by the European Micronutrient Recommendations Aligned (EURRECA) network in 2009, to answer the question: Which putative measures (biomarkers) of zinc status appropriately reflect a change in zinc intake of at least 2 weeks?

Data Sources: A structured search strategy was used to identify articles published between January 2007 and September 2022 from MEDLINE (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL). Relevant articles were identified using previously defined eligibility criteria.

The aim of this study was to assess changes in the blink reflex (BR) parameters as a valid and easy-to-use tool in ALS patients. We assessed the BR test in patients with a definitive diagnosis of ALS, healthy volunteers, and patients with diseases affecting the peripheral nervous system.

Modification of the Tensile Performance of an Extruded ZK60 Magnesium Alloy with the Addition of Rare Earth Elements.

The influence of rare earth (RE) elements on the microstructure and mechanical performance of an extruded ZK60 Mg alloy was studied. Two types of RE elements were added to a ZK60 material and then extruded at a ratio of 18:1. The first new alloy contained 2 wt% Y while the second one was produced using 2 wt% Ce-rich mischmetal.

Predictors and long-term outcome of intracranial hemorrhage after thrombolytic therapy for acute ischemic stroke-A prospective single-center study.

Introduction: Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is a potentially devastating disease with high disability and mortality. Recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) is an effective treatment with a 2-8% possible risk for symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH). Our aim was to investigate the risk factors and long-term clinical outcomes of ICH in patients after rt-PA treatment.

Objective: Epileptic diathesis is an inherited neurophysiological trait that contributes to the development of all types of epilepsy. The amount of resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) theta activity is proportional to the degree of cortical excitability and epileptic diathesis. Our aim was to explore the amount and topographic distribution of theta activity in epilepsy groups.

Thrombin generation as a predictor of outcomes in patients with non-traumatic intracerebral hemorrhage.

Background: Non-traumatic intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) accounts for 10-15% of all strokes and leads to a higher rate of mortality as compared to ischemic strokes. We aimed to find out whether the thrombin generation assay (TGA) could predict outcomes in patients with ICH.

Patients And Methods: In this prospective, observational study, 87 consecutive patients with ICH and 164 healthy controls were included.

Deconstructing Immune Cell Infiltration in Human Colorectal Cancer: A Systematic Spatiotemporal Evaluation.

Cancer-related immunity has been identified as playing a key role in the outcome of colorectal cancer (CRC); however, the exact mechanisms are only partially understood. In this study, we evaluated a total of 242 surgical specimen of CRC patients using tissue microarrays and immunohistochemistry to evaluate tumor infiltrating immune cells (CD3, CD4, CD8, CD20, CD23, CD45 and CD56) and immune checkpoint markers (CTLA-4, PD-L1, PD-1) in systematically selected tumor regions and their corresponding lymph nodes, as well as in liver metastases. Additionally, an immune panel gene expression assay was performed on 12 primary tumors and 12 consecutive liver metastases.

Involvement of Mitochondrial Mechanisms and Cyclooxygenase-2 Activation in the Effect of Desethylamiodarone on 4T1 Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Line.

Novel compounds significantly interfering with the mitochondrial energy production may have therapeutic value in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). This criterion is clearly fulfilled by desethylamiodarone (DEA), which is a major metabolite of amiodarone, a widely used antiarrhythmic drug, since the DEA previously demonstrated anti-neoplastic, anti-metastasizing, and direct mitochondrial effects in B16F10 melanoma cells. Additionally, the more than fifty years of clinical experience with amiodarone should answer most of the safety concerns about DEA.

Wire myography is used for measuring vasomotor responses in small resistance arteries; however, the commercially available devices are not capable of active cooling. Here, we critically evaluated a transparent resin material, in terms of mechanical, structural, and thermal behavior.

Although many factors may influence the outcome, neurophysiological examinations might also play a role in its course. The Hypothermic Effect of Hydrogen Sulfide Is Mediated by the Transient Receptor Potential Ankyrin-1 Channel in Mice.

Hydrogen sulfide (HS) has been shown in previous studies to cause hypothermia and hypometabolism in mice, and its thermoregulatory effects were subsequently investigated. However, the molecular target through which HS triggers its effects on deep body temperature has remained unknown. We investigated the thermoregulatory response to fast-(NaS) and slow-releasing (GYY4137) HS donors in C57BL/6 mice, and then tested whether their effects depend on the transient receptor potential ankyrin-1 (TRPA1) channel in knockout () and wild-type () mice.
