Executive functioning (EF) deficits co-occur frequently with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and have a long-term detrimental impact on quality of life of children and their families. Timely identification of risk for EF vulnerabilities may hasten access to early intervention and alleviate their long-term consequences. This study examines (1) if EF deficits are elevated in toddlers with ASD compared to nonautistic siblings of children with ASD, typically developing (TYP) toddlers, and toddlers with atypical developmental presentation; and (2) if EF deficits have a detrimental effect on adaptive functioning in ASD.

Background: Due to familial liability, siblings of children with ASD exhibit elevated risk for language delays. The processes contributing to language delays in this population remain unclear.

Methods: Considering well-established links between attention to dynamic audiovisual cues inherent in a speaker's face and speech processing, we investigated if attention to a speaker's face and mouth differs in 12-month-old infants at high familial risk for ASD but without ASD diagnosis (hr-sib; n = 91) and in infants at low familial risk (lr-sib; n = 62) for ASD and whether attention at 12 months predicts language outcomes at 18 months.

Deficient expression of HLA class-I molecules observed in many cancers is suggested to influence both disease progression and potential efficacy of T cell-mediated immune therapy. Previous studies have attempted to correlate either primary breast cancer tumor grade with HLA class-I levels or the presence of HLA class-I-deficient cells in metastatic lesions with survival. In this study we evaluated the HLA class-I status of matched primary and secondary breast cancer lesions in order to ask the question: is metastasis of breast cancer associated with down-regulation of HLA class-I expression? Immunocytochemistry analysis shows a definitive correlation between diminished HLA class-I expression and dissemination of breast cancer to tumor-draining lymph nodes: both the total number of HLA class-I+ cells per sample and the levels of expression are dramatically decreased in secondary versus primary tumor lesions.

Molecular markers of ordinary invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast have been extensively studied and their prognostic significance has been assessed. A common variant of breast cancer, tubular carcinoma, has an excellent prognosis as judged from several clinicopathologic studies. To investigate the role of beta-catenin in mammary gland development and neoplasia, we expressed a stabilized, transcriptionally active form of beta-catenin lacking the NH(2)-terminal 89 amino acids (Delta N 89 beta-catenin) under the control of the mouse mammary tumor virus long terminal repeat. Our results show that Delta N 89 beta-catenin induces precocious lobuloalveolar development and differentiation in the mammary glands of both male and female mice. Virgin Delta N 89 beta-catenin mammary glands resemble those found in wild-type (wt) pregnant mice and inappropriately express cyclin D1 mRNA.

Expression of the breast and ovarian cancer gene BRCA1 is regulated at both the transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. We found that the expression of the BRCA1 protein may also be regulated at the translational level. In addition to an AUG start codon at position 1, BRCA1 mRNA has a second in-frame AUG (+17) that acts as an alternative start codon to generate a novel BRCA1 protein that lacks the first 17 amino acids (DeltaBRCA1(17aa)).

The changes in renal hemodynamics that develop with aging in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) were examined. Micropuncture studies revealed that glomerular capillary pressure was elevated in SHR at 9 mo of age compared with 3-mo-old SHR and 9-mo-old normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats. Glomerular hypertension developed because of a small increase in systemic blood pressure and a decline in preglomerular vascular resistance, allowing transmission of elevated systemic pressure to the glomerular capillaries.

A 41-year-old woman with McCune-Albright syndrome and a 2-cm thyroid nodule of ten years' duration presented for fine-needle aspiration, which yielded vacuolated clear cells with granular chromatin in pseudopapillary arrangement. The resected tumor showed 90% clear cells and 10% nonclear cells with capsular and vascular invasion. The cytoplasmic vacuoles in the clear cells were 3+ for oil red O stain in touch imprint cytology.

gamma-heregulin is a recently described novel isoform of the heregulin/neuregulin class of EGF-like ligands that bind to and activate receptors of the ErbB family. Human breast carcinoma tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) express activation antigens in situ indicative of ongoing immune response-CD28, CD45RO, CD69, CD71, and DR. However, interleukin 2 (IL-2) receptor was poorly expressed: CD25 was detected in only 1/24 samples and CD122 in only 2/24 samples. Furthermore, isolated breast cancer TIL were defective in proliferative response but recover when treated with recombinant IL-2.

Salt restriction inhibits renal growth and stabilizes injury in rats with established renal disease. Male Munich-Wistar rats that underwent right nephrectomy and segmental infarction of two thirds of the left kidney were fed standard chow for 4 wk and then randomly assigned to ingest standard or low-salt chow for an additional 4 wk. Four wk after ablation, rats had systemic hypertension, proteinuria, and glomerular sclerosis.

Purpose: To correlate cytologic findings of stereotaxic fine-needle aspiration biopsy samples with histologic findings of excised samples of nonpalpable mammographically detected lesions.

Materials And Methods: In a retrospective review of 2,988 consecutive stereotaxic fine-needle aspiration biopsy samples of nonpalpable breast lesions obtained within 5 years, 70 samples were categorized as atypical. Excision with needle localization and specimen radiography were performed in all lesions; cytologic findings of aspirates were correlated with histologic findings of excised samples.
