The role of the pre-T cell receptor (TCR) in lineage commitment to the gammadelta versus alphabeta lineage of T cells was addressed by analyzing TCRbeta chain rearrangements in gammadelta T cells from wild-type and pre-TCR-deficient mice by single cell polymerase chain reaction. Results show that the pre-TCR selects against gammadelta T cells containing rearranged Vbeta genes and that gammadelta T cell precursors but not gammadelta T cells express the pre-TCRalpha protein. Furthermore, pre-TCR-induced proliferation could not be detected in gammadelta T cells.

The pre-Talpha chain is a 33-kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein with an extracellular part similar to the constant domain of the immunoglobulin supergene family. We have sequenced (11 kb) the human pTalpha gene, which like the murine pTalpha gene consists of four exons: exon 1 encodes the 5' untranslated region, the leader peptide and the first three amino acids of the mature protein, exon 2 the extracellular immunoglobulin (Ig)-like domain, exon 3 a 15-amino acid peptide including a cysteine required for heterodimerization with TCRbeta, exon 4 the transmembrane region, the cytoplasmic tail and the 3' untranslated sequence.

One of the these defended in the article is that in ordinary language illness has lost much of its power to mitigate and excuse, so that "sickos" are treated as if they were some strange minority or political sect.

Intramuscular electrodes can detect a greater range of frequencies from muscle, obtain a less distorted signal, and are therefore felt to be more sensitive to detecting fatigue. To determine the reliability and sensitivity of electrode placement (with a fixed distance) for assessing muscle fatigue, we placed three intramuscular electrodes in and two surface electrodes on the biceps brachii of 30 healthy male subjects.

Severing and subsequent capping requires the binding of domains 2 and 3 (S2-3) to the side of the filaments to position the N-terminal domain 1 (S1) at the barbed end of actin (actin subdomains 1 and 3).

Participants: A 17-member panel of physicians with expertise in clinical and virological research and inpatient care in the field of CMV diseases.
Evidence: Available clinical and virological study results.
Study Design: A prospective evaluation of the incidence of low back pain in college athletes was undertaken.
Objectives: To evaluate prospectively leg length discrepancy, hip flexor tightness, and lower extremity acquired laxity or overuse as predictive factors for low back pain in college athletes.
Summary Of Background Data: A pilot study found an association between low back pain and the factors to be studied.
The demographics of the workforce have changed dramatically in recent decades. Today women constitute nearly 50% of the workforce, and most are in their reproductive years. Women are employed in occupations with exposures to strenuous physical exertion, chemicals, ionizing radiation, heat, noise, vibration, infectious agents, and stress.

The common mechanisms of injury are compression, traction, ischaemia and laceration. Seddon's original classification system for nerve injuries based on neurophysiological changes is the most widely used.

Samples were tested under code by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in one laboratory. The median number of samples collected from each patient was 5 for blood (range, 0-15) and 5 for urine (range, 0-15).

Administration of oral valaciclovir, a valine ester of acyclovir, achieves sufficient plasma acyclovir levels to inhibit many clinical isolates. Acyclovir has been associated with enhanced survival in AIDS but not with CMV disease prevention.

We compared treatment with the protease inhibitor indinavir in addition to zidovudine and lamivudine with treatment with the two nucleosides alone in HIV-infected adults previously treated with zidovudine.
Methods: A total of 1156 patients not previously treated with lamivudine or protease inhibitors were stratified according to CD4 cell count (50 or fewer vs.
Using 334-nm light, we demonstrate side writing of Bragg gratings with an index change of ~10(-4) in germanium-doped fibers. No hydrogen loading of the fibers was required. These gratings have the same temperature stability as gratings fabricated with 240-nm light.

The binding of the N-terminal domain (S1) of gelsolin to monomeric actin has been extensively documented. In contrast, the location of the C-terminal calcium dependent domains (S4-6) interacting with the actin filament during the severing process remains uncertain. In this study, we have identified a new interface that supports calcium dependent gelsolin binding to actin.

Objective: Two components of flexibility, muscle tightness, and ligamentous laxity in college athletes were studied to determine whether these factors were associated with the incidence of lower extremity injuries.
Design: Prospective cohort study.
Setting: College athletic department.
We describe a simple, optical technique for mapping 180° domains hidden inside photorefractive crystals. We intersect two coherent light beams in the crystal. Photorefractive coupling between the two beams causes one beam to emerge with a map of all the crystal's 180° domains imprinted upon it.
