Background: Specific highly polarized aquaporin-4 (AQP4) expression is reported to play a crucial role in blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity and brain water transport balance. The upregulation of polymerase δ-interacting protein 2 (Poldip2) was involved in aggravating BBB disruption following ischemic stroke. This study aimed to investigate whether Poldip2-mediated BBB disruption and cerebral edema formation in mouse bacterial meningitis (BM) model occur via induction of AQP4 polarity loss.

This study aimed to assess the role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in regulating monocarboxylate transporter-1 (MCT1) expression in rat brain after permanent focal cerebral ischemia to identify a new target for early treatment of cerebral ischemia. Focal cerebral ischemia was induced by permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (pMCAO) in rats. Morphology and protein expression levels of MCT1 were assessed by immunofluorescence and Western blotting.

We previously reported that aquaporin 4 (AQP4) played a critical role in formation of brain edema and the altered expression of dystroglycan (DG) could relate with AQP4 expression after traumatic brain injury (TBI). However the mechanisms of this process remain unclear. DG was showed could act as a scaffold involved in adhesion-mediated signaling in ERK/MAPK pathway.

Curcumin is a natural product with several anti-Alzheimer's disease (AD) neuroprotective properties. This study aimed to investigate the effects of curcumin on memory deficits, lactate content, and monocarboxylate transporter 2 (MCT2) in APP/PS1 mouse model of AD. APP/PS1 transgenic mice and wild-type (WT) C57BL/6J mice were used in the present study.

Background/aims: Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection (CHB) plays a central role in the etiology of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Emerging evidence implicates insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-II as a major risk factor for the growth and development of HCC. However, the relationship between HBV infection and IGF-II functions remains to be elucidated.

Diverse species of rodents and shrews, which are abundant worldwide, harbor a variety of viruses; some of these are closely related to human viruses and possess zoonotic potential. Previously studies have demonstrated that the mammarenavirus and hantavirus carried by rodents or shrews could cause diseases in human population. To determine the distribution of zoonotic viruses in Shenzhen city, the major city in southern China with a high population density, we analyzed 225 rodents (Rattus norvegicus and Rattus flavipectus) and 196 shrews (Suncus murinus) from urban and rural districts for the presence of mammarenavirus, hantavirus, and hepatitis E virus (HEV) by RT-PCR targeting the conserved regions.

Objective: The white matter injury caused by intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) includes demyelination and axonal injury. Oligodendrocyte apoptosis is reported to be involved in triggering demyelination. Experimental observations indicate that both endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondrial pathways could mediate cell apoptosis.

Objective: To understand how aquaporin4 (AQP4) and dystroglycan (DG) polarized distribution change and their roles in brain edema formation after traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Methods: Brain water content, Evans blue detection, real-time PCR, western blot, and immunofluorescence were used.

Results: At an early stage of TBI, AQP4 and DG maintained vessel-like pattern in perivascular endfeet; M1, M23, and M1/M23 were increased in the core lesion.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze the genetic evolution of the VP1 region of Coxsackie virus A4 (CVA4) from herpangina cases in Shenzhen during 2012 and 2014.
  • Researchers used real-time reverse transcription-PCR to test various enteroviruses, amplified the VP1 gene of positive samples, and conducted homology and phylogenetic analysis.
  • Findings showed that the CVA4 strains from both years belonged to genotype GIb, with notable genetic variations, indicating different evolutionary trends between the 2012 and 2014 strains.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), a recently discovered class of non-coding genes, are transcribed throughout the genome. Emerging evidence suggests that lncRNAs may be involved in modulating various aspects of tumor biology, including regulating gene activity in response to external stimuli or DNA damage. No data are available regarding the expression of lncRNAs during genotoxic stress-induced apoptosis and/or necrosis in human glioma cells.

The aquaporin-4 (AQP4) water channel contributes to brain water homeostasis in perivascular and subpial membrane domains of astrocytes where it is concentrated. These membranes form the interface between the neuropil and the extracellular liquid spaces. The brain-selective deletion of the dystroglycan (DG) gene causes a disorganization of AQP4 on the astroglial endfeet.

Brain edema is among the major complications in children with bacterial meningitis. Aquaporins are integral membrane pore proteins that form channels to regulate cellular water content. Aquaporin-4 (AQP4), which is enriched in parts of astrocytic membranes that are apposed to pial or perivascular basal laminae, is the predominant aquaporin in the central nervous system.

The membrane-bound water channel aquaporin-4 (AQP4) plays a significant role in maintaining brain water homeostasis. In ischemic brain, changes in the expression level of AQP4 have been reported. Previous studies suggest that the internalization of several membrane-bound proteins, including AQP4, may occur with or without lysosomal degradation.

Background: Demyelination is one of the most important pathological factors of spinal cord injury. Oligodendrocyte apoptosis is involved in triggering demyelination. However, fewer reports on pathological changes and mechanism of demyelination have been presented from compressed spinal cord injury (CSCI).

Water homeostasis of the nervous system is important during neural signal transduction. Astrocytes are crucial in water transport in the central nervous system under both physiological and pathological conditions. To date, five aquaporins (AQP) have been found in rat brain astrocytes.

Objective: To reveal the expression and possible roles of aquaporin 9 (AQP9) in rat brain, after severe traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Methods: Brain water content (BWC), tetrazolium chloride staining, Evans blue staining, immunohistochemistry (IHC), immunofluorescence (IF), western blot, and real-time polymerase chain reaction were used.

Results: The BWC reached the first and second (highest) peaks at 6 and 72 hours, and the blood brain barrier (BBB) was severely destroyed at six hours after the TBI.
